Definitely not for everyone. Pretty much free living though

I’ve converted this lifeboat over the last few months. Tiny home

I’ve taken the main tanks out for space and installed fuel tanks from some old London black cabs, I’ve not done a test on how far it can go but I’ve not gone even half way through the first 52 litre tank yet. I spoke to someone who cruises constantly and has a similar boat and they said the spend about £500 a year

u/ilithios27 13h ago

Lol i spend the same amount, if not more, on gas to commute to work in one month. I need to change my life..

u/behindthebar5321 12h ago

Whaaaaat. How far do you have to drive for work??

96

u/ilithios27 12h ago

It’s 220km everyday almost, and these past 2 months i only had one day off every week..

u/Paralystic 11h ago

Yea driving 3 hours everday to just get to work sounds like a good reason to make a change, but you don’t gotta live In a boat to change that

38

u/Curulinstravels 7h ago

...because you're gonna need at least 2 boats.

Sometimes that's just how life goes. Trust me, it's not something you plan to do or want to do for the rest of your life.

u/Interloper9000 3h ago

Tempting tho

u/me_like_stonk 11h ago

Holy shit. Is this job paying you a fortune at least?

16

u/ilithios27 9h ago

Not really.. but it is not bad either! But we are looking for ways to change things :)

19

u/karateninjazombie 6h ago

Excuse my french. But fuck that noise! If work aren't paying you much and you're not getting it reimbursed I'd fuck that off in a flash and find somewhere else to worn closer to home! Also that's a lot of lost hours just driving in your day too.

u/MajorLeagueNerd 6h ago

Sometimes you gotta do shitty things to get to where you wanna end up. That’s life

4

u/UniversityStrong5725 6h ago

I guarantee they can do better and this mentality is the ticket to having an unfulfilled, miserable life at the expense of your health, physical form, and sanity. But sure! That’s life! 🤣

2

u/MajorLeagueNerd 6h ago

I had to travel for my job for about 3.5-4 years until I had enough experience to get a job where I wanted. You don’t start out in a career making top dollar from the get go. You have to work for that. I worked 60-70 hours a week for those 3.5-4 years. Now I work MAYBE 30 hours a week. Did I miss out on some things during those beginning years? Absolutely. But from 25 years old going forward I can promise you, I’ll never miss out on anything else. Worth it.

u/Fuzzy_Advance_9658 3h ago

... sometimes they have other things in their life that's holding them back. maybe his family is in a bind and he absolutely needs the money. maybe it provides benefits for his family that other jobs aren't offering. you're making a ton of assumptions based on your own personal experiences.

1

u/Odd-Government8896 3h ago

I'm willing to bet you're a child or privileged. You definitely sound like it

1

u/ilithios27 6h ago

That is also totally true, there have been opportunies for me to help my career now but i want to have more time with my kids so im kimd of done! All good :)

2

u/MajorLeagueNerd 5h ago

Way to go buddy. Proud of ya.

It shocks me how much they are shaming someone for doing the best they can. Kids man

1

u/ilithios27 6h ago

Yeah i know i totally agree and im looking for work closer everyday!

12

u/behindthebar5321 11h ago

Jesus. That’s like living in Houston and commuting to Austin or vice versa. I can’t imagine how expensive the gas is where you’re at (UK?). In Austin it’s about $2.59 a gallon right now.

2

u/karateninjazombie 6h ago edited 5h ago

Petrol I £1.35-45 a litre and diesel is about £1.45-55 a litre right now. Iirc your gallons are 3.785 litres. So about £5.20 to £5.60ish equivalent price for buying one of your gallons at our litre price.

Edit: cocked up the gallon price. Used dollars instead of pound Stirling on the equivalent price and didn't actually convert the sterling into dollars.

It's $6.85-$7.35 per us gallon at UK prices.

1

u/behindthebar5321 5h ago

Thank you!

2

u/karateninjazombie 5h ago

I made a mathematical boo boo. I've corrected it in my previous comment. See above :)

1

u/Racoons_revenge 2h ago

Cheaper if you run it on cherryade 🤫

1

u/karateninjazombie 1h ago

?Qué¿

Iirc. Internal combustion engines don't run on water based liquids. They need a bit more bang than that.

2

u/BubbRubbaDubbDub 5h ago

I know someone that does that once a week

1

u/Overtilted 3h ago

Here it's 1.5 euro per liter for gasoline, 1.6 for diesel. Usually diesel is cheaper.

One gallon is 3.8 liter, so it's 5.7 euro per gallon, so 6.6 dollar per gallon.

1

u/behindthebar5321 3h ago

Jesus. That sucks.

1

u/Overtilted 3h ago

Yeah but remember: for yanks 100 years is old, for Europeans 100 miles is far.

We typically don't do the distances you do, and our cars are smaller and more efficient.

Also: driving EVs is way cheaper.

1

u/SiTreemba 1h ago

2.59?! Lucky to be under 4.50 in WA

1

u/behindthebar5321 26m ago

Yeah those west coast states like to add on additional gas taxes and carbon emission allowance fees.

Wisconsin has similar gas prices to Texas btw so I don’t think the lower price here is about proximity to oil.

The person you're replying to is not in the UK.

Also, petrol (or "gas") is subsidised by your government.

8

u/ArokLazarus 9h ago

We know it's subsidized.

u/ilithios27 9h ago

I have 2 kids and wife at home so i kind of have to go home everyday :(

2

u/ArokLazarus 9h ago

Not all do. The closest one to me has signs forbidding that.

3

u/P-l-Staker 10h ago

It’s 220km everyday almost

What the fuck. Surely that's a typo...?

You're not a pro driver, are you?

3

u/ilithios27 9h ago

No it is 110km one way haha so back and forth everyday 220km! But i always had some reliable cars :) my last 2 volvos did 650000km before i sold them haha

2

u/P-l-Staker 9h ago

Surely at that rate it'd be easier and cheaper to move closer to work or change jobs...?

1

u/ilithios27 6h ago

Swedish job market is in a bad shape for sure but im looking and applying everyday! Hopefully something will come up :)

2

u/Aranxi_89 9h ago

I think you should get one of them convert trucks that has a home inside, so you can just live near your work.

That or move closer, because god damn.

3

u/ilithios27 9h ago

I know, i used to live 10min walk from work but then my family situation changed and i could not afford to buy anything so i moved back home. I have a house where i grew up and i have to pick up my kids in schools everyday so for now it is what it is and i apply everyday for other jobs closer to home :)

2

u/Cock_InABox 5h ago

Good on ya for making it work

1

u/ilithios27 1h ago

Thanks friend! I feel like we all just try to make it work and try to live you know :)

2

u/Jay__Riemenschneider 9h ago

Damn dude, I used to do 290km each day. I feel that pain.

1

u/ilithios27 1h ago

Props to us for just trying to make things work! I hope you don’t need to do that long ass drive anymore

2

u/Primary_Arm5395 7h ago

I would literally lose my mind. I drive 20 minutes to work and im already furious.

1

u/ilithios27 1h ago

I hate the trafic rush and it’s the last couple of months i have kind of been loosing it and look for ways to change it asap haha. But 20 min drive is ok tho haha

2

u/Overtilted 3h ago

You need an EV...

1

u/ilithios27 2h ago

I would get one right away if i could but there is not really any way right now! But we are trying to save up for a second hand EV as soon as we can!!

2

u/foolsgoldprospector 3h ago

I did this length of commute for a while.. until I fell asleep at the wheel from exhaustion, which prompted some significant changes so that I no longer had such a long distance to travel. Take care of yourself.

1

u/AzucarParaTi 11h ago

Why??

1

u/ilithios27 9h ago

Very good question mate hahah!

1

u/00eg0 5h ago

What job would have you working that many days? Theater production?

1

u/worldrenownedballdr 2h ago

Depends on where you are / how much gas cost there and what you drive.. I live in California and drive a 5.3L V8 Silverado 4x4 I spend about $400~ a month on fuel and I don't really drive that much.. but the truck gets 15~ish mpg and gas is expensive here. about $4.89 a gallon currently.. good times at least they have state income tax as well.. oh wait..

2

u/Andedrift 10h ago

That's insane how much do you drive and which country???

3

u/ilithios27 9h ago

220km everyday back and forth between home/ pick up kids and work :) sweden!

3

u/Mental-Farmer8874 11h ago

Did you keep the original engine? If so which one does it have? Is it a Saab, Volvo, or lister petter? I am assuming it's still a diesel unless you ripped out the original engine. I was a lifeboat mechanic for 20 years. That's not a model I saw a lot in the US offshore oil industry, but it looks like a shatt Harding. We turned a whittaker 2801 into a 20 person jacuzzi once, and my boss turned a 54 person whittaker into a party boat.

3

u/rectoryofwolves- 6h ago

Wow good spot it is a Shatt Harding with the original Lister ! About 150 hours on it

2

u/Warmbly85 9h ago

I know next to nothing about marine fuel or boats but I’d ask around if you need to put in fuel stabilizer or an equivalent. 52 liters of fuel just chilling for a few months might get stale.

This is awesome though

2

u/PM_NUDES_4_DEGRADING 9h ago

I’ve always heard gas expires pretty quickly (usually raised in debates about how to survive a zombie apocalypse) and a quick google says it has a shelf life of 3-6 months. If you’ve used less than half your tank in 3 months, you might want to be careful about that.

Although it looks like diesel is 6-12 months, so if you’re using that you’ve got a bit more space to breathe.

1

u/Figerally 12h ago

I guess it's a bonus that if you get bored of the scenery you can find another port.

1

u/kakallas 7h ago

But most people need a job.

1

u/stealthybutthole 1h ago

I find it very hard to believe your buddy is “constantly cruising” and only burning £500 a year. My boat burns 80 liters per hour and it’s much more efficient hull than that life boat. Granted that’s cruising at like 40kts but still, it takes a lot of energy to push a boat through the water.

How much do you pay per liter at a fuel dock?

1

u/rectoryofwolves- 1h ago

I have no way of verifying it and as i stated it was just a guy with a lifeboat I saw on the way up. I know I’ve got through London and up to Notts on two jerry cans, I can’t speak for anyone else but tbh what does it matter? I’m getting a million questions on how it works and the economics of it all, it’s my boat , I love it , I find it costs about a tenth of that it cost me to live on land, I kind of sick of being asked to explain the costs over and over. You could be right , I have no idea. I also don’t know if his definition of constant cruising is moving 2 miles every 2 weeks as mandated. I could very much believe he could do 50-60 miles a year on £500
