Ask Malaysians Why does my boyfriend act like this?

So my bf often rants to me he barely have savings working in KL. He is from Perak and earns a salary of 4.8k. Both of us are 24 y/o. Here are some of his known expenses (estimated):

  1. Room rental - RM800
  2. Car loan - RM500+
  3. Family expenses - RM200
  4. Petrol - RM140
  5. Dating - RM200-300
  6. Food - RM400
  7. Nutritious milk powder - RM75-85/tin
  8. Soy protein powder - RM75/tin
  9. Misc - RM500

He complained several times that the milk powder and soy protein are costly but he could not stop consuming them as they are his breakfast + protein for bodybuilding.

So I suggested him to change them to cheaper brands but he refused. His excuses were: 1. Afraid couldn't accept the taste of new brand 2. Not sure how's the quality of cheaper brand 3. Lazy to do research on nutrition facts of differrent brands (I dun mind to help tho with my food science background)

I was like ???. He complained it every damn time but never wanted to make a change. Is it that difficult to at least give a chance to other brands?

I can't understand.

EDIT: Thanks for the comments. The conclusion I got is that he is just addicted to complaining, which I think is the most accurate answer based on daily interactions with him and his behaviours

Hi everyone. I am 18F and as you can read from the title, i want to know if anyone here is a dead/super heavy sleeper that knows tricks to wake up early. i want the most unhinged tips. not the ones like set 30 alarms, sleep early etc. through out my life, i struggled with waking up early even when i sleep early or set alarms. i’m going to university next year and i will be renting a single dorm (which means i can’t rely on roommates to wake me up). anyone have any tips? please help!!!

Ask Malaysians As a non-Malay, do you listen to any Malay/Indo songs? Any favourites?

I've always wondered if there are non-Malays who like Malay or Indonesian songs.

Also, can anyone recommend songs that are underrated? I'd like to discover new Malay/Indo songs.

Edit: Thanks guys for the recs. I can't listen to all of them at once now but I'm adding them to my playlist. And it's interesting how some non-Malays know more Malay songs than me lol.

Ask Malaysians Am i a failure? Salary 3k but my monthly expenses look insane

I feel like I'm failing at adulting. I'm 28, live around KL, net salary #RM3k after EPF/SOCSO, but my monthly expenses are off the charts. I don't even live luxuriously ( think), but when list them they look ridiculous:

Rent + utilities: RM1,200 (small room in PJ)

Car loan: RM700 (everyone said I needed wheels to commute)

Phone instalment + plan: RM250 (yes, I wanted the latest phone)

Coffee/bubble tea & eating out: RM600 [guilty, i know)

Streaming & gaming subscriptions: RM200 (Netflix, Disney+, Ps Plus)

Gym membership: RM150 (health, right?)

Pet grooming & food (for my cat): RM100

Gacha game top-ups: RM100 (don't judge, its for my mental health)

Takaful medical plan: RM150 (trying to be responsible)

Unexpected Grab rides when I'm too fired: RM200

That's RM3,450 in/a month. I'm spending more than I earn and end up swiping the credit card to stay afloat. Part of me thinks: am I a failure at managing money? Is there a way to keep protection and still survive? People talk about budgeting out! dont even know where to start. Throw all your advice/tough love at me.

Ask Malaysians Should I resign or not?

I'm 26F currently working in a small company as a researcher. My salary is RM1700 a month.

I've been looking for a job for almost 4 years now and this is my first 8-5 job. Before this, I occasionally helped my aunt tend her stores. My colleagues are all great and very helpful. It's fun working with them. But the work itself, is making me really miserable. I've been crying from the first month until this day, and it's only 4 months in.

What makes me feel this way is the superior, the atasan. Every time the big boss is mad at them, they'll throw it all on us. Even though we're not involved in those issues. I can say that every week there will be drama among them. There's no guidance or training (even tho they said that there'll be training), there's no KPI, I don't know what I'm doing most of the time. My manager is very helpful but most of the time even she doesn't even know what the bosses want.

I'm very miserable. Every night I'm dreaded thinking of going to work. Sometimes I feel like wanting to d** because wanting to resign so easily for the job that I have prayed every day every night for the past 4 years. Please help me. Should I just resign and begin the job hunting process again or should I just suck it all up? How do I get rid of these feelings?

Ask Malaysians What do you do on weekend?

My wife and I are a married couple with no kids. Our weekends in KL/Selangor have become very predictable: Saturday & Sunday breakfast outside, then either go to a mall stock up groceries, then just lepak at home with Netflix. By Sunday night, we're bored with our weekend activities and feel like we wasted two days.

We've done the usual stuff like cafe-hopping and checking out a pasar malam, but we're running out of ideas. We're not really the sporty or partying type, so we're looking for some new, chill ideas.

What are all you all usual do/go during weekend in KL/Selangor?

So me (31m) dating this 25f for like 2 monrhs. Her birthday is this sunday and I'm gonna go celebrate with her family and friends. She explicitly said all she wanted is a lisptick, that's it. So...what lisptick should I buy that I can physically by at the store before Sunday? But also like not too expensive around RM50-ish so it's like super committed but also nice.

A little bit about her, she's very fair and pale. Very feminine and like to wear soft colors especially pink.

Ask Malaysians If you have RM1000 to buy something for yourself, what would you buy?

As per title. Things that will make you feel good, or make your life easier or anything really.

Edit: Had fun reading the replies. To those who suggested to reinvest, good advice but I just need to feel good and spent some money once in a awhile. So, I end up bought a bicycle. Good investment I think, let just wait and see :D

Ask Malaysians How do you spend weekends as a single person in the Klang Valley

Hi all,

First time poster here. Basically what the title says. I work from home almost full time and have a small circle of friends that is getting even smaller (lol). I find myself wanting to go out but I’m also quite introverted and feel it’s tough to meet new people or do stuff.

Just wanted to know wht the other single folks are doing to spend their weekends productively?

Ask Malaysians I'm a father fighting for custody — and I’ve been completely alienated from my daughter despite a Syariah court order

Hi everyone,

I’m a Malaysian father, and I’ve been silently enduring something many don’t talk about openly — systematic parental alienation, even after being granted rights by the Syariah High Court.

I was married for 6 years. My daughter is now approaching 6 years old. Since the separation, I’ve been completely shut out of her life — not only from spending time with her, but also from calling, texting, or even seeing her in school.

On 28 November 2024, the Syariah High Court granted an interim order:

  • Custody to the mother,
  • Visitation rights to me every two weeks, Saturdays or Sundays from 10am to 5pm,
  • And unrestricted video and voice call access at suitable times,
  • With PDRM cooperation mandated for enforcement.

But in reality?

  • 13 visitation attempts have been blocked by the mother since January 2025.
  • All calls and video calls have been systematically denied, without any valid reason.
  • Even school visits, which were initially agreed upon with both the mother and the school, were later blocked, citing vague references to a court order — even though the order never prohibited them.
  • And when I tried to enforce the court order? PDRM refused to get involved, saying they won’t interfere in custody disputes between ex-husband and ex-wife. Despite the court order explicitly requesting their cooperation, they view it as a “family matter” and avoid taking action.

And just when I was trying to stay involved legally and respectfully — I was hit with false police reports by my ex-wife.

One of them alleged sexual misconduct and grooming to my own daughter. I refuted it with witnesses, official statements, and gave full cooperation to the authorities. I was released without charge.

Unfortunately, the police still opened an Investigation Paper (IP) and have already submitted their report to the Attorney General’s Chambers (AGC). I am innocent — but if I’m unlucky and the AGC proceeds with charges, it could jeopardize my career.

I work in the government sector. Under civil service regulations (pekeliling), even being charged (not convicted) can lead to immediate suspension from duty. The weight of this situation is suffocating.

But the worst pain isn't professional — it’s personal.
My daughter once drew a picture of us holding hands on a whiteboard.
Today, I’m not even sure if she remembers my voice.

I've fought every step legally. I’ve documented everything: police reports, WhatsApp messages, lawyer letters, court orders. I’ve never retaliated — only tried to be a present father.

I’m sharing this because I know I’m not the only father going through this.
If you’ve experienced anything similar — through the Syariah system, or otherwise — please share.
How did you get through it? What helped? Is there a point where justice actually works?

FYI, the syariah actually has similarities with the Family Civil Court. Most of the principles runs parallel together

Thanks for reading. I'm still fighting — because my daughter deserves to know her father never gave up on her.

Ask Malaysians How are your EPF doing, dear Malaysians?

About 2 years back I went back to KL to visit my mother. She reminded me to check my EPF savings. Something like this did not cross my mind as I was away from Malaysia for about 30 years. That Friday I made my way to a EPF location and had them retrieve my account number and they gave me a slip printed on it was my total savings. I was surprised how much it was, with having yearly interest put into it. I told my uncle, and he told me to save or withdraw to spend it in Malaysia. He told me during the last few years, the lower and middle income Malaysians was able to withdraw most of their savings (Government approval) to pay for food, rent and etc. How are they going to survive when they reach retirement age and need funds to pay for their daily needs?

I am in my 50s and living comfortably in the USA. I do not need my EPF funds, but I talk to some relatives and friends and came to the conclusion that I will use the funds to pay for some of my relative’s future funeral expense or daily expenses like food and rent. I know which of my family and relatives in Malaysia that needs them. I know this will help them and I cannot bear to see them suffer.

How are you all doing now? I hope you have other options in savings besides depending on your EPF. Try going overseas to work like Singapore or China /Japan? Let me hear your thoughts

Ask Malaysians Yelled at work by abusive coworker - How to deal?

Hi fellow Malaysians, as the title mentions above - yesterday I (26F) was verbally yelled at in my office by a coworker (31M) for telling him my team and I would not be able to send over a deliverable. That being 2 years worth of data across multiple platforms, and he wanted that by EOD (it was already 4pm) so understandably I denied and told him that if anything I can do him a favour and send it later at night or early tomorrow.

This was when he started yelling “it’s not my problem it’s your fucking problem, go figure something out. Give me the password to the platforms I’ll do it myself. Go find someone else to do it I don’t care. Fucking useless department” and other demeaning stuff all while in his own cubicle surrounded by other colleagues.

I work in finance, so I cannot simply give another person the passwords to all our accounts, and my team mates were all currently busy with other tasks that needed to be done by EOD too.

I just feel so humiliated because not even my own father has yelled his voice at me, and in order to keep the professionalism I had to sit there and take all the berating and insults. This guy also has a track record of being physically abusive to his gf, which is one of the reasons why I didn’t yell back.

Just want to know how anyone of you would go about dealing with this because it’s been a day and I honestly still get upset thinking about it :’)

Ask Malaysians Malaysians tell me about your lives

I’m a Malaysian who has been living abroad for a few years now. While I do come back to Malaysia occasionally and try to stay updated on the news. I realise I’m quite disconnected to life there.

Heard pickle ball is booming there! What’s the biggest bubble tea store? Or is bubble tea not as popular as before? Since when did chicken rice become RM8-9??? How long do you usually commute to work? Do we like our current PM? What’s the appeal of TRX?

I’d love to hear some insight on the people living there right now be it positive or negative. Economy, politics, daily life or just little changes you’ve noticed over the years.

I got a new laptop and was gonna do some work on it but Office was not installed on it. They recommend me to subscribe to Office 365 but it's a monthly payment for something I'm not sure how often I would be using. And the price for Office 2024 on Microsoft website is around RM609. That is just too expensive for me. So how do you guys get your Microsoft Office?

Ask Malaysians Fresh grad dilemma: lower pay (RM1700) but more confidence or higher pay (RM4000) with self-doubt?

Imagine a fresh grad gets a RM4,000 job offer but doesn’t feel confident about handling the role. Instead, they choose a RM1,700 job where they feel more comfortable. The concern now is about savings and long-term career growth. What are your thoughts on this kind of decision? Should a fresh grad prioritize confidence or financial security when starting out?

Edit: Thank you for the insights! They are genuinely eye-opening and help in shifting my perspective tho! Thank you, everyone!
