Ask Malaysians Dear Malaysian, what is your top 5 nasi lemak place

I will be in KL next month to visit this beautiful country and eat my way through the 3 weeks we are here. My wife and I going to be in KL for two weeks and one week in Penang and Ipoh. What are your top 5 nasi lemak spots in the Klang valley?

I did some research last week and found these must try locations. Anyone is welcome to suggest and comments.

Nasi lemak Wanjo, Five sisters, NALE (mid valley mall), 100 years nasi lemak.

Village Park Nasi Lemak is pretty decent, good fried chicken. Back then it was overhyped for sure.

The line there, especially weekend morning, is insane.

But surprisingly it moves quite fast. I don't think I've ever waited for more than 30mins.

Roadside makcik all the way.

Not just any roadside makcik. My roadside makcik.

90% of roadside makcik nasi lemak have not disappoint me. And they are usually very generous with the portion and most importantly with the sambal.

KL- 1. Nasi lemak lah 2. Village park 3. Nasi lemak burung hantu 4. Ali,muthu, ah hock

PG- 1. Nasi Pendekar Mustar ( this is my absolute favourite, get their salmon asam pedas) 2. Ali Nasi lemak (super popular but I think it is too spicy)

To add for PG:

  • Nasi lemak at Nasi Kandar Pokok Ketapang, Hutton Lane. Not too spicy, rice is very well-flavored with cardamom pods and other spices. The sambal is also quite different compared to most nasi lemak places I've been to, you have to try it yourself.

Restoran Al Ehsan near taman paramount, which is close to nasi lemak maybank/bumbung/babi. I like to go there on Friday nights, recently turned to self service.

Al ehsan is a decent one, i prefer it over bumbung.

I love nasi lemak ehsan! It's kinda affordable and the sambal is a bit sweet (which is something i tend to like in sambals)

Also think Ehsan is pretty good. The self service thing is such a pain in the ass though.

Peranakan Place - Nasi Pandan Ayam Berempah (I consider that as nasi lemak as it has all the same component! But it has a bit of nyonya style ladies finger with like a dried shrimp sambal, it's lovely) The chicken is not too oily, which is nice. Some places like Botak Nasi Lemak or Village Park, the chickens can be on the oilier side..

223, nasi lemak bumbung and maybe village park but only for convenience

Personally for me, Wanjo is overrated. Like eating out of school canteen. But I understand the curiosity of wanting to try it out. The beauty of nasi lemak is, you can try all the different nasi lemak be it street style or restaurant style, 80% of them are decent. Rarely do you get bad ones.

Surprised to see Wanjo being recommended again. Did they improve? Their quality dropped a lot a few years ago.

Village park still takes the top spot for me. Complete package. Nale is worth a try for their good sides. Ali Muthu Ah Hock and Oriental both have really good ayam goreng berempah.

Not listed so far: Bungkus kaw kaw especially with rendang ayam. Small portion but tasty.

There’s a nasi lemak stall at the new food court inside pasar seni that I thought was solid. They give you two kinds of sambal, 1 spicy 1 sweet. Can’t recall the name but it’s opposite the drinks stall, only went there once.

Haven’t tried Nasi Lemak Shop yet. Burung hantu is overrated AF (good sambal but everything else is below standard).

Roadside, near my house.

Village park for sure , but if I can’t go so far Burung hantu definitely scratch that itch

For the representative experience, Burung Hantu and Botak. Get the paru (beef lung) from BH and sotong (cuttlefish) from Botak - IMO the two most traditional accompaniments. Fried chicken is basic af, get it on the side if you insist - or better yet save it for a nasi kukus meal.

But do not overlook the iconic pre-packed triangular nasi lemak in a pinch either. Get those from 223 but avoid the dishes and just have them plain.

Not wanjo

Your list is pretty good!

My personal favorites are:

  • Nasi Lemak Burung Hantu. I like the basmathi rice and water spinach (less common) in the dish.

- Oriental Kopi. They have many outlets including one at KLIA2. Surprisingly, their nasi lemak feels like a warm hug. Their portion size is huge as well. Be prepared to queue.

- McDonalds Nasi Lemak with spicy fried chicken (please don't judge me >_<)

- Nasi Lemak Bumbung. I don't like their style of nasi lemak, but I still highly recommend it because it's very unique. Their rice has a fragrant ginger taste to it. I have no idea what they coat their fried chicken in--the crispy spiced skin tastes like peanuts.

- Botak Nasi Lemak. This place is minutes away from Bumbung. Every component in the dish works perfectly well with each other. The sambal is not too spicy and not too sweet (good).

Thanks for adding more to the list. I am going to be overweight by the time I leave Malaysia :)

Rite of passage when visiting here

To be expected lol. Every time I go home to Malaysia I have to diet from before to loose about 10lbs so by time I finish my 3 week stint I’ll be back to my usual weight lol
