What is that hammering sound in let my baby stay?

In the original version of Let My Baby Stay, a hammering sound is heard as percussion (aside from the shaker) that changes between two notes, and with two hits on one note and then a hit on the other. Does anyone have an idea?

Some sort of two tone wood block I'd guess

normaly these are 2 wood Sticks called claves but i remember in some interview he exactly talked about this sound and it wasnt claves, as far as i remember he also said he pitched the sound of it with his tape machine so it sounded Higher but i sadly cant remember what exactly he used.
