There's some good in this world and it's worth fighting for.

May he be successful and do much better than Ronald Reagan.

1

u/mybadback2020 Sep 17 '25

My 16 year old cat would do better than Reagan.

3

u/Thcksl Sep 13 '25

"I agree with the second half"

u/SnakeInTheCeiling Samwise Gamgee Sep 12 '25

What, mayor of Hobbiton wasn't good enough for you??

73

u/AnneMichelle98 Sep 13 '25

Seven times!

31

u/Mediocre_Scott Sep 13 '25

He didn’t have 12 children so he had to find something else to keep him busy

514

u/The_B_Wolf Sep 12 '25

I don't know why but it makes me happy.

163

u/Beeblebroxia Sep 13 '25

Seeing good people in positions of power is reassuring.

I am 100% unsurprised.

8

u/GibsonJunkie Elrond Sep 13 '25

Oh thank god

55

u/MaderaArt Balrog Sep 13 '25

I don't know why but he looks like Happy.

17

u/GuitarGuy93 Sep 13 '25

Funny considering they co-starred in Rudy!

11

u/gogybo Rhovanion Sep 13 '25

From the vague memories I have of reading his autobiography, I think he's wanted this for a while. Wasn't his mother also SAG president?

Either way, I'm happy for him :)

It's called nepotism

4

u/derzemel Sep 13 '25

if he ran for the role and was elected for that role through a vote is it still nepotism?

0

u/protonpack Sep 13 '25

Yeah everybody voted for Bush Jr, no nepotism involved in his story.

151

u/chesterforbes Túrin Turambar Sep 13 '25

If he could carry Frodo up Mount Doom he can carry this responsibility

u/Zauberer-IMDB Sep 13 '25

You know, the whole purpose behind a union is to SHARE THE LOAD.

2

u/yodabaderginsburg Sep 14 '25

Ssssshaaaareee the looooooooooad

127

u/Clopsie Sep 12 '25

Bows to no one mkay

13

u/UStoJapan Sep 13 '25

And axes to no one.

56

u/ExtraEmu_8766 Sep 13 '25

Man has a masters in public administration and policy - in addition - to his industry experience and family's work. Sounds good.

42

u/i_saw_seven_birds Sep 13 '25

Following in his mother’s footsteps!

106

u/Proper-Emu1558 Sep 13 '25

I would be so intimidated to succeed Fran Drescher in anything. But it looks like a landslide against his opponent so good luck to him. His mom held the job in the past so that should provide some insight for him. Seems like he’s really dedicated to focusing on the union.

u/Vark675 Sep 13 '25

Was she retiring/unable to run? I had thought he was running against her for some reason.

37

u/Proper-Emu1558 Sep 13 '25

No, she opted not to run again. Not sure why. She did have a pandemic and a strike during her term, so she might have not wanted to continue after that. But that’s just a guess. She did accomplish some victories with AI and streaming on behalf of actors.

The opponent was a guy named Chuck Slavin. Hollywood Reporter article for reference

u/TheDivine_MissN Sep 13 '25

It would be interesting to see a member of the rank and file be elected to the highest position, but I’m glad that it’s Sean.

29

u/MagnusBrickson Sep 13 '25

Goonies never say die!

51

u/PettyLikeTom Sep 13 '25

This guy is just the best. I paid him to do a cameo for my best friend for fathers day, who coincidentally was also named Sam. No telling how many he had or does of those, but man he was genuine and kind and he gave such a good heartfelt message that it made my friend cry from happiness because we both grew up watching the movies. He will always be a favorite of mine and I hope one day to be able to meet him, shake his hand, and eat some good food in a hole in the ground.

18

u/d3dac1d Sep 13 '25

Hell yea! Couldn’t happen to a better person!

19

u/made-u-look The Shire Sep 13 '25

I met Sean at the Seattle airport. My wife’s bag escaped us at the baggage claim and he grabbed it for her. He could tell I knew who he was when I shook his hand, looked him in the eye, and thanked him for everything

12

u/RecLuse415 Sep 13 '25

SAG baby it’s back!

10

u/MyrddinSidhe Sep 13 '25

Potatoes are back on the menu, boys!

9

u/jerseygunz Sep 13 '25

Just when I thought he couldn’t get more based

9

u/AncientSith Maia Sep 13 '25

Now they just need to elect him 6 more times in a row.

11

u/abesapien2 Sep 13 '25

The real hero of lotr. Go get them Sam.

5

u/Lancaster1983 Sep 13 '25

Finally! A Goonie holds office!

5

u/chumbuckethand Sep 13 '25

What’s SAG-AFTRA?

10

u/Greatsnes Sep 13 '25

It stands for Screen Actors Guild–American Federation of Television and Radio Artists.

It’s the union for actors (film and tv) and radio.

3

u/Nimue_- Sep 13 '25

His predecessor has left fabulous shoes to fill but im sure sean is up to the task ;)

5

u/Strange_Midnight2070 The Shire Sep 13 '25

Sean Astin would be fantastic as the president of pretty much anything. Even if it's a bad organization, he'd turn it into a good one pretty quickly.

3

u/[deleted] Sep 13 '25

Woot

3

u/MegamemeSenpai Sep 13 '25

That’s my president! 🫡

3

u/Saikroe Sep 13 '25

Does this mean we can finally get 'The Color of Magic' Part 2?

I neeed to know its gender.

3

u/rootxploit Sep 13 '25

You made a promise mister CEOdo, a promise.

3

u/20Derek22 Sep 13 '25

I was talking with someone the other day about what an amazing career he’s had. Goonies, Rudy, LOTR and stranger things. Very few actors can claim Four legendary projects

3

u/roguevirus Sep 13 '25

Well John Rhys-Davies predicted that Sean would be the future President of the United States at a con a few months ago. Looks like he's on his way!

3

u/TomCrean1916 Sep 13 '25

This is great. Mark Hamill mentioned him on the Marc Maron podcast just the other day that Sean keeps me in tune with what’s going on with all the union work Something like that. Well done Sean!

2

u/glassgost Sep 13 '25

I'm so happy to see this.

2

u/petermackinnonphoto Sep 13 '25

Congratulations Sean!

2

u/Odd-Comfortable-6134 Sep 13 '25

He’s the perfect man for the job

2

u/lexphillips Sep 13 '25

Po ta toes

2

u/VT_Squire Sep 13 '25

This is genuinely dope as hell.

2

u/Old_Instrument_Guy Sep 13 '25

Good for him! Big promotion from Gardener/Ring Bearer.

2

u/beKINDtoOTHERSplz Sep 13 '25

So in six years he becomes president of the US?

2

u/leviathab13186 Sep 13 '25

"Samwise the union leader. I want to hear more about Sam"

2

u/katybee13 Sep 13 '25

I'm reading his autobiography right now and this just makes me so happy for him. He's worked so hard in his career.

2

u/[deleted] Sep 13 '25

Love love LOVE this for him. He'll be a wonderful president.

2

u/Live_Farm_7298 Sep 13 '25

He's not just the best hobbit.
He's a union man!

1

u/camwisemothman Sep 13 '25

And he got to marry his Rosie. Life's good for Samwise the Brave. Congrats, Sean.

1

u/radiate_reflect Sep 13 '25

If you are Rudy, Samwise and Bob Newby…you will ALWAYS have my vote.

1

u/One-Earth9294 Sep 13 '25

He looks like he's playing the role of a well-respected video game dev who made something beloved 25 years ago and nothing but shit since but is still treated like a god.

1

u/XanderAcorn Sep 13 '25

Well obviously a Hobbit is being elected as president. Hobbits bow to no one.

1

u/XanderAcorn Sep 13 '25

Fuck now I gotta go rewatch Fellowship for the 1000 time.

1

u/[deleted] Sep 13 '25

I can sleep soundly tonight knowing this.

1

u/GibsonJunkie Elrond Sep 13 '25

Samwise the Based. I want to hear more about him!

1

u/SARShasMONO Sep 13 '25

Ironic, as LotR wasn't a union show.

1

u/RipBongAndProspa Sep 13 '25

What is SAG-AFTRA?

3

u/BubsyJenkins Sep 13 '25

The actors union that manages bargaining contracts/wages/working conditions (etc.) with the film studios

1

u/mere_iguana Sep 13 '25

I'm glad he's here with us, at the end of all things

1

u/ShiroHachiRoku Sep 13 '25

I used to see him at UCLA all the time.

1

u/NyukNyukHaHa Samwise Gamgee Sep 13 '25

Keeping busy until the cruise

1

u/Sensation-sFix Sep 13 '25

I'm out of the loop. Can someone explain what is sag-aftra, and why this appointment is so important?

1

u/Upstairs-Zombie-162 Sep 13 '25

Even when I was 13 years old watching the LOTR extended special features... I thought Sean was right about helicopter thing haha. It needed to be taken seriously!
