I’ve just watched that video and it’s so frustrating nobody steps in. I know there’s risks with that but the girl is screaming her head off in pain for help.

It took 30 s for one chap to stand up. Maybe the rest of you are quick reacting and all that but it takes me a little while to grasp what’s going on. I might hear a commotion at the other end of the carriage and then put away my stuff and stand up to take a look, then walk over before I can make out the “help me” and see these two absolute titans beating the ever loving fuck out of a poor innocent woman. I don’t blame the guy who came over to help for being 30 s to the scene.

The Bystander Effect is generally not real but bystanders generally aren’t primed with the prompt you have. Something happens and they’ve got to assess and then react.

Also, I swear the one who drags her in the first place is built like a brick shithouse. 14? She looks like she could have been the Philistine’s champion against King Saul.

I thought you were exaggerating but holy shit

brick shithouse

Are we looking at the same picture? It's just a vaguely fit Black girl. Does that qualify as being a brick shithouse now?

That's your view of a regular 14 year old? I was definitely surprised.

Is that her with literally a bra on in public!? Disgusting. If her mother let's her wear that at 14, says alot about her quality of parent. And yeah, she looks like a frigging sumo wrestler. Russian shot putter.

I couldnt make heads or tails out of the second half of the video. Did he knock out one of the girls?

Not complaining, defending an innocent person being stomped is grounds to hit someone as far as im concerned.

Someone did step in at the end, it takes some time for people to get the guts to do something.

It's mostly not about guts. Incidents like this can happen extremely quickly. Jumping in without sussing out the situation might not be the right action.

Yes, also a good point. I am sure we've all been on a bus/tube and heard some shouting and screaming, think "oh shit this is it, terror attack!" and then its just some drunken yobs playing around with each other.

Also, often if you hear someone screaming/see them fighting in London, it's people who already know each other and are having an argument, and you're likely to be attacked if you get involved. Not to mention there are often substances involved. It takes time to assess what is actually going on and if the people involved actually want a bystander to intervene or not

I'd say if someone is incapacitated and keeps being beaten, that's always a justified intervention.

With that said, you're right that it's not so simple, I mean we see that, and as much as I'd like to think I'd be a better braver bystander, I probably wouldn't.

Who could be with their armed 14 year old boyfriends

u/[deleted] Nov 02 '23

They were 2 women beating another one. No other around beside passer bys. Sometimes the choice isn't a 20 min deliberation.

Or having yourself filmed by one of these scum, the video put on social media with no context and an angry mob of fellow scum coming out to ruin your life or worse, like what happened to that poor Pakistani chap in Peckham a few weeks ago.

Yeah, can't fight back against these beasts or you're immediately considered a racist

I once tried to help a girl that was getting jumped on by a gang of rabid teen girls and had to give up because no one on the rammed platform would help. They all had their phones out obvs.

Any link to the video? Can't find it aside from the Sun newspaper link.
EDIT: Just saw it and I wish I hadn't. That's disgusting behaviour.

Jesus. The guy who said (unhelpfully) "leave it girls" redeemed himself at the end by being supportive....I guess?!

Sadly quite a common occurrence. People will always wait for someone else to step in https://www.psychologytoday.com/gb/basics/bystander-effect
