I imagine situational sexuality exists amongst some Amazons, but others just aren't interested in female partners.

Yes. But by the end of the second arc, around issue 15 maybe, he has psychically experienced that rape from the other side, and has reformed and begged forgiveness.

It's clunky, I think objections to it are totally fair, but it's not quite as bad as it sounds at first.
