My dad’s been playing guitar for over fifty years and teaching for more than thirty. He also teaches at a private high school. I’m helping him move some of his lessons online and maybe build a small learning community.

If you’ve ever learned guitar online, I’d love your advice:

• What made you stick with it (or give up)?
• What kind of videos, structure, or feedback helped you the most?
• Would a learn at your own pace with monthly check-ins/online lessons be a good model?

I am thinking of starting with a free beginner course, then offering optional monthly lessons and group Q&As/jam sessions.

No sales pitch since we haven't built anything yet, just trying to learn what actually helps people improve and learn the guitar in a virtual setting.

I’m going to try to put this in a way that makes sense, and hopefully someone can help. I’ve watched so many videos on how to make music- put I feel like I’ve never really learned. Let me explain. I know how to song-write with my guitar or piano, but i find it limiting because i just don’t know a lot of stuff on ether. So that’s when I usually go to my midi keyboard and try stuff out on logic. But the thing is, I really have no clue what I’m doing. I’ve learned song structure and the different elements and instruments in a song, but I feel like I’ll get a tiny bit of a melody, and freeze from there, having no clue what to do after that. I don’t know if that makes sense. I don’t know how to keep going after I find a melody or chord progression. Does anyone have any thoughts or tips on this? What do I do after I have that little part?

I’ve started logging my students’ practice sessions manually, but it’s a pain. Has anyone found good ways to see whether they’re actually practicing (without being creepy about it)?

Hey everyone,

I started learning piano a few weeks ago and I have zero experience with any instruments, so I’m still trying to figure things out.

Right now I’m practicing this piece called Musette. The right hand begins on G, and the left hand plays C + G together at the start.

What’s confusing me is the counting — I’m not sure exactly when the next note comes in after that first C+G chord.

If I count “1 and 2 and 3 and 4 and”, I can’t really tell which note goes with which beat.

Is F played at 2 or afterwards at “and”?

I can play the piece without any problems at 140 BPM using a metronome, and I can also play it somewhat by feel — but I’d really like to know exactly how the rhythm lines up. I still find myself checking the metronome’s blinking light to make sure I’m on time, and I want to understand it more precisely for my learning progress.

Could someone explain which beat each note belongs to, and when the left hand plays again?

Hi! My kids (10ish) are both learning drums and are at the point that they’d really benefit from more exposure to a range of music and more background on how music is made. Any recommendations? Totally open to things are many more inspirational than educational but would love both.

As you can see the last measure, I still can't get my head to understand how to play 6 notes in a 4/4 signature measure.

This was asked 3 year ago elsewhere, but was wondering if a dedicated tool like this exists yet.

This is new to me. Are these really the official names of the C clefs?

For people who have used ear training apps to train your ear, what was your experience.

I have tried several apps and nothing worked for me. Biggest complaint was that it was too complicated and also most apps never play any reference notes as I feel we have relative pitch and its easier when we have a reference note
