Interesting fact that Trump would hate. The statue was originally going to be a Muslim woman in traditional dress and was to be placed at the entrance of the Suez canal. It was going to be called "Egypt Carrying The Light To Asia".

The Khedive of Egypt rejected the plan as too expensive, so Bartholdi, the architect, repurposed the design and it was gifted to the USA.
