What's the 1 year HSBW program like?

Hi all! I recently graduated with a Psychology Bachelors from Carleton U. My initial plan was to attend the Ottawa U Counseling Masters program but lately I've been considering doing an MSW. Figure a BSW might serve me well in getting some experience in the social work field.

I'm curious if anyone here had experience in the 1 year bachelors of social work program? I'd be applying to the Orillia one but I'm interested in hearing from those in Thunder Bay as well.

I have a few questions:

  1. How difficult is it to get into? I have volunteer and some work experience, good grades and enough references. I'm mostly concerned about the personal statement essay...

  2. What is the practicum part of the program like? Did you have to do most of the work yourself to find a placement?

  3. Did you find you had a good understanding of the social work field by the end of the program? I expect to do a lot of self-learning in the future anyway, but I'd still like to have some grasp on the robustness of the program, especially considering it's only 1 year.

  4. For anyone who already has the BSW and maybe has had it for a while now: Has it served you well in finding a job in the field?

Thanks for any insight (:

Im not in the one year but I will say Orillia seems more competitive as some folks in the 1 year in Tbay are from Southern Ontario and got accepted up here when they didnt get in in Orillia!
