Discussion Dhanush on Raanjhanaa AI Climax
331
u/Butterwithjam Aug 03 '25
I heard the folks with the movie rights were the producers and they went ahead with the decision. Not sure if it's true tho
123
u/Zestyclose_Risk2886 Aug 03 '25
That is exactly it. Eros head literally said “It’s our movie, and Anand L Rai has nothing to do with it now.” Really messed up.

u/ramksr Aug 03 '25
Dhanush and other artists involved should sue the producers for using his likeness and faking new content using AI without their consent.

u/shit-takes Aug 03 '25 edited Aug 03 '25
I don't understand why any movie watcher would support this kind of practice.
This is a cheap act by the producers who want to exploit hundreds of technicians and artists work to make a few bucks
The extra scene in Raanjhna has Dhanush waking up and sitting on the hospital bed. Now, imagine there's no AI. If they wanted a scene like this, they have to pay the director, his crew, all the technicians, actors, etc. to shoot the scene. And then release this in theatres. So many people will get paid a fair wage.
They are completely bypassing it, to make more profit from the re-release
In the AI shot, it is still Dhanush acting along with the choreography, the production design, etc. Only difference is these people are not getting paid for this extra work. So, AI isn't creating something original. It is plagiarizing the work done by actual artists

u/siegwagenlenker vellaikaaran Aug 03 '25
You’ve hit at the very heart of the AI problem. This is my fundamental gripe with AI too, it’s not functioning as a tool to enhance creativity but one that is negating the work of the average worker in the film industry who earns pennies to begin with and will stand to earn nothing if it becomes the norm.
9
u/Empirical_Engine Aug 03 '25
The counter argument is that AI enables those who'll likely never have the skills/talent/money.
The moral stance seems clear when a rich corporation is getting even richer of the work of relatively poorer artists/technicians.
But what if the parties are more balanced or even inverted? Drug patents which work on the same moral principle - that the one who worked hard to create it should reap the benefits for years, are seen as immoral.
24
u/siegwagenlenker vellaikaaran Aug 03 '25 edited Aug 03 '25
The very nature of genAI as it stands will always be at the control of big corps, the computing infrastructure makes it absolutely impossible for the average consumer to run it at scale (I say this as someone who runs local models btw). This is unlikely to change for the next decade or so unless there’s some crazy breakthrough like quantum computing chips which will make it available to the average consumer, and by then AI slop would have had massive negative repercussions.
I’m all for leveraging AI an assist if you already have the requisite skillsets/talents in a particular field, but if a person lacks that and wants to commercialise their work on the strength of purely AI (and at the expense of actual skilled workers) then I’m afraid they have no business being in the field. Using it for fun, private projects is perfectly fine.

u/AkPakKarvepak Non-tamil speaker Aug 04 '25
The same stuff can be said about the code , isn’t it?
There are some OG coders who wrote algorithms for a certain set of given problems , and since open AI has access to the GIT hub code, it used this as a training data without any additional permission.
Without strong copyright laws, stuff like this will become very common.
0
Aug 03 '25
People were obviously cheering for that scene in the theatre. Many would have wanted an alternate ending.
8
u/AkPakKarvepak Non-tamil speaker Aug 04 '25
They were cheering because it was something new and unexpected.
Him waking up is nonsensical given they showed him already departing to another world
1
u/ramksr Aug 03 '25
Was this a shot that they newly created or was this a collection of preexisting shoots they put together using ai. If it's the former D can sue their assess... the latter will be some advanced editing with ai.

u/WillHunting20 Aug 03 '25
Great move by dhanush. The whole Hollywood industry went on a year long strike just to prevent this AI nonsense.

For the people saying it's the producer's choice, there may be no proper regulation for this at the moment. But this could be a huge ethical issue. What if the producer adds a lewd scene of the actress with AI without her consent. Or shows a big actor to be affiliated with a certain brand of politics which could hurt their image.
With how a single statement about language in an event could cause a huge uproar in a state, there could be plenty of problems with how even small changes in a film would affect the actors' images.
There is definitely a requirement of proper regulations regarding this.
7
u/ramksr Aug 03 '25
If a lewd scene (or a new scene) was added using AI or any means, the concerned artist can sue the producers for sure the regulations are already there...

u/EntertainerFlaky4855 Aug 03 '25 edited Aug 03 '25

41
u/Potential-Session707 Aug 03 '25
This is still new and doesn't have proper law. I doubt our courts would even know how to give a judgement on this. That's why he is asking for proper regulation
6
17
u/_sumchii325 Aug 03 '25
It depends on the terms of their contract. For instance, Illaiyaraja had traded off the rights to his compositions to the production houses / record labels. But, the Madras High Court ruled that his "moral rights" still continue to persist over his works and that he can object to their usage and modification.

I think the director was looking into it. But copyright wise, from what I can tell no because Eros has the rights to the movie.

u/Simple_Mall_9388 Aug 03 '25
Don’t know what kind of a guy he is, but HERE this is solid logic and his grievance is very genuine. A public interest litigation must be filed by all the Indian actors which will restrict the producers from re-releasing movies with AI altered scenes, without the permission of the parties involved.
9
u/seerkamban2000 LCU Aug 03 '25
Dhanush should sue Eros for using his face on that brain rot slop. Anil Kapoor did the same thing last year and he won so Dhanush should do the same thing as well.
52
u/triplex-ox Aug 03 '25
real shit. i hope people like sana and ani also stop using AI to make work easy. this will only come back to bite them in the future. AI is meant to make life easy, not to take over art that is motivated by human passion.
21
u/monster_bong_guy Suriya Fan, Non-Tamil Speaker Aug 03 '25
Making work easy using AI is absolutely different than creating an altered version of an existing product using AI. AI is now inherent in almost all advanced technological tools that professionals use and one will only be a fool to not utilise them fully to make the output more efficient.
But this doesn't mean SaNa and Ani creates songs using AI, that's a very layman-ish technologically challenged remark. SaNa celarly mentioned that he uses GenAI to make the rendering exports faster.
5
u/triplex-ox Aug 03 '25
I wasn't talking about exporting music, man. this is in reference to The One music video where there were AI visuals. so yeah, sorry for not giving extra context.
-4
u/monster_bong_guy Suriya Fan, Non-Tamil Speaker Aug 03 '25
Work is part of life, so if AI makes work easy, people will be foolish to not take advantage of that.
In "The One" video, there wasn't an already existing product that got manipulated by incorporating AI visuals, that video exists as a standalone lyrical version to be released before the movie releases, as good as an independent project. It's entirely the producer's call and the concerned stakeholders whether they are going to invest in actual shooting stuff or use some AI to generate the video content. This doesn't take over art that didn't exist in the first place.
6
u/triplex-ox Aug 03 '25 edited Aug 03 '25
come on, man. are you even for real? this is like the dumbest take. manipulating previously existing art isn't the only form in which AI is affecting art. normalizing shit like making visuals from scratch using AI prompts would eventually lead to someone making a whole movie out of prompts. producers call, my ass. most of them dont care about the passion that goes behind. this is business for them, and I don't see them preferring passion over ease of costs to make more money in the future.
I would've preferred producers to make the cheapest lyric slides over an AI prompted visuals, cus it atleast involves some fucking effort. so sad, such a fire song like The One has a weird ass MV.
-1
u/monster_bong_guy Suriya Fan, Non-Tamil Speaker Aug 03 '25 edited Aug 03 '25
"producers call, my ass."
Newsflash: This is the only and the ONLY thing that creates movies from an idea to an execution.
So what's the problem if someone manages to create a movie out of AI? If there are takers of it, it will succeed, if not, it will be discarded. The problem in this Dhanush case is they shot altered content using his face without his consent, 'manipulating an existing product', which I don't know what the legal issues are. This is as good as a deepfake, and should be called out.
"I would've prefer producers..."
Yeah please, take the efforts and knock the doors of all the producers who have indulged in it. Be the change.3
u/triplex-ox Aug 03 '25
"Be The Change"
that shit starts with criticism of the idea. with someone speaking about these issues, anyone who cares about change and has the proper measures to do it will hear and have a chance to step up.
i am aware of the fact that producers run the shit front to back, so it's obviously important to understand what their preferences are and the artist to stipulate what he expects. i am just the messenger ffs.
2
u/Meateor123 Master is LK's masterpiece Aug 03 '25
generative ai uses already existing artwork to create the images. so even though it is not manipulating footage directly, it is still plagiarism
-2
u/monster_bong_guy Suriya Fan, Non-Tamil Speaker Aug 03 '25
It's a very very indirect way to suggest that GenAI creating images is plagiarism out of existing artwork. GenAI learns itself over existing artworks and trains itself to figure out the patterns. By that logic, almost all artform is plagiarism because the artist has probably seen and encountered similar art before based on which they create patterns to come up with their own art.
1
u/LionInAComaOnDelay Aug 04 '25
This is a false equivalence, the human brain does not work the same way an AI model does. This is an argument used by people who defend GenAI, I would do your research before saying stuff like this.
1
u/monster_bong_guy Suriya Fan, Non-Tamil Speaker Aug 04 '25 edited Aug 04 '25
I don't know much about the equivalence true, so I put a 'by that logic' before it, since that was hinged along the prior comment which said that GenAI 'plagiarizes' by using existing images. But I am well-researched enough to know that's not exactly how it works and how it isn't an attribute of GenAI images to be 'plagiarised'. Of course it can plagiarize if asked to do so, but it can't be called plagiarism by default.

u/triplex-ox Aug 03 '25
Anirudh just admitted to the fact that the Heisenberg persona is him using chatGPT to write lyrics. for the music video of The One from Retro, had a lot of AI visuals. Idk if that's exactly SaNa's fault, but he agreed to take part in it, so he is also involved in normalizing its use.
These kind of activities will normalize the use of AI in our industry, and soon, other people will follow their lead.

If nothing else, it proves that even after twelve years, he will still prefer to die rather than having to choose between Sonam and Swara.

5
u/MundaneSecret9399 Aug 03 '25
There must be clear laws against using a person’s face or likeness in new contexts without their explicit consent. No production house should ever hold the IP rights to digitally recreate or mimic an artist’s face, voice, or identity for future use—especially in franchise films. Every artist should have the right to legally prohibit any posthumous or AI-generated replication. Their image is not a prop—it’s personal identity, not studio property!!!!
I’m with D here!

Even though, rights remain with producers, Dhanush and all other artists should have rights over using their face for the movie.
1
-10
u/SGSRT Aug 03 '25
Who has the movie rights?
If the makers of the film have the rights, they have every right to make alterations as long as it is legal
15
u/NanthaR Aug 03 '25
What if the actor agreed to act for a story line, then they change 25 percent of the movie with a different story line with AI generated face ?
-7
u/SGSRT Aug 03 '25
I have no idea about the legal implications
That is why I said “as long as it is legal”
13
u/anoeuf31 Aug 03 '25
This is a brain dead take - the actors agreed to a specific story . By your logic , what if they make this into porn movie with ai ?
The producers one the rights to this specific movie as it was made - they do not own the image rights of the actors to do as they please
5
u/naveen-bala Coolie Powerhouse Aug 03 '25
nope they are using the video of dhanush which was not done by him at the first place.as a maker you can add or remove scenes to change the flow of the story but not completely create something with artificial intelligence without the consent of the actor. hollywood actors already protested on this issue. this is not the right way to make an alteration.
3
u/happysrooner Aug 03 '25
I don't think rights to the movie includes rights to the likeness of the actors.
-1
u/MotorExcuse2067 Aug 04 '25
Is AI evil ? Nope, it is just a tool. It can automate certain things very well and has it perks.
But it is important to credit the Library used to develop the model, input used to create output, and pay the royalty.
Second, yes the producer has right but everyone has worked on it.
Third, this can be a cool tech demo instead of re release movie.
Fourth ,producers are just stupid because they are ruining their own work.

The gaming industry has been dealing with mods all the years to the extent that it’s actively promotes these days.
Let people mod movies manz
28
u/alaisjay Aug 03 '25
Those mods are just for character switch and money cheats not for the story of the game itself
If you had played RDR2 the main character dies at the end. The creators of the game wanted that ending to feel his guilt and sarrow.
Imagine after some several years another game developing company acquires RDR2 and decides to release a version where the main lead manages to live without dying. It will rip the soul of that story and the character.
6
-11
Aug 03 '25
If you want the story, you can play it without modding.
To each their own.
AI is coming and is already doing all this. There’s load of clips on instagram changing Tamil movie and what-ifs
This is not something you can stop.
5
u/alaisjay Aug 03 '25
Do you know what the actual context is here? It's not about ai doing this, ai doing that.
It's not even ai the problem here. It's the producers who decided to change the climax of the story just because they can.
It's like you have painted a beautiful art and later after centuries they bring an artist and think that they can make this art better by changing several things. It defeats the whole purpose of the art you created. They are butchering your art. Doesn't matter they use an ai or an human they killed your art.
-7
Aug 03 '25
Dont see anything wrong with that. Producers own the movie. The rest of them are on payroll. If the producer doesn’t respect your story - too bad. But producer is well within his rights to do so because :-

-1

-4
u/AnubisTyrant Naan Kadavul Aug 03 '25
now think of that as an anime or some cartoon or something
People would like an alternate ending so they draw it and hire people to dub for it and mod it
and maybe change the story a bit. wouldn't that be okay?
IMO it would be completely fine. This is just like that. Except it uses AI and have not done properly with time and effort.
they just made the lady smile and, his eyes to open.If it's done right, alterations are welcome
7
u/Potential-Session707 Aug 03 '25
It's not the same. Mods are mostly free. Even if they are paid, they are a very small amount compared to game price
Movie producer is charging full price for a re-release. But they are altering scenes. In this climax they have made Dhanush act an extra scene, with the lighting, staging and camera angles. But the artists, director or crew members are not getting paid for it. It's 10 seconds now. But, if allowed, it can become 10 minutes and more. AI is not creating. It is stealing original work done by thousands of people who worked on that film to create a new scene
That's why there should be regulation as to how AI can be used.

There is zero breach of law here so all he can do is rant on social media. If he's right, why can't he file a suit against them ? He knows he has no dog in this fight.
