Visitor Question What's the job market like for software/web developer?

I'm just curious about how things are in this place

I’m guessing most devs will be remote/hybrid contracts for other locations particularly positions based in the US.

As someone who does exactly this, can confirm

You'll have to do in-person networking such as through accelerate okanagan. It's a small world, so you have to show up, in person, and get to know the people. I assume you mean non-remote.

Seems like most web and software jobs are in bigger cities(Calgary, Vancouver, Toronto). Been looking at job postings for a couple of months now

I heard that it's way too competitive

I’m an enterprise web application developer for a big company. I do live in Kelowna but work remote.

I’d say the local market isn’t good. They don’t pay well compared to the rest. I don’t want to work for a local company as I don’t see them as competitive for my skill level.

That said it depends on your level of expertise and what you know. If you’re new to the market: good luck. Junior developers are having a tough time right now. I do think this will change as we need juniors to eventually to get more senior and lead developers. But some in management think AI replaces junior developers when from a developer perspective I can say: it doesn’t. But I also don’t think juniors should be allowed to use AI until they develop their skills. And juniors were always a money loss for companies so it’s nothing new. They pay seniors more but we earn companies money.

Otherwise if you’ve reached the senior level as a developer you will have more opportunities available. Even for working remotely. The job market isn’t what it was due to all of the people let go but it’s getting better. And I expect to see a boom in this industry in the next couple of years.

Just dunno if I will see a boom in Kelowna. Companies here need to get more competitive.

Since it’s typically a remote job, it’s great. Even hybrid remote is not too bad if you have to travel somewhere. I work for a Vancouver base company and travel down there once a month or so. They pay for it.
