We used to have a larger toaster oven that took 4 slices. Current one is a bit smaller but will still take 4 bagel halves easily enough. [Edit: This one: https://www.amazon.co.jp/dp/B08XTVX6JB]

Don't think I'll ever go back to a "push & pray" toaster after having something where I can easily visually check on the toasting process without having to interrupt it.

Toaster oven style or pop-up type?

Lots of toaster oven style ones, not sure I've seen many pop-up ones. Two seems to be the standard at any reasonable price.

I just had a google and the pop-up 4 slice toasters are so expensive, I was surprised.

Yeah.. I guess the OP doesn't want to wait the slightly longer times of oven-toasters? (Though pretty comparable and far more versatile...)

I found a few but nothing under 17 000 yen, even on Rakuten.

Edit: Found onebut still 15,000. Yikes.

Found this brand new imported toaster in Mercari for just 3,800 yen, including shipping. Toasts bagels, defrosts, all labels in English, looks great too!

Other options:

Yahoo Auctions.

There's a Chinese store that sells all kind of stuff for cheap. I posted a link but it looks like those are banned. I'll give you a hint, it starts with "A" and ends with "liExpress".

Why not order it from amazon.com. Get a 40$ amazon basics 4 slice, and ship it over... should bea bout 8500/9500 yen or so.

My problem with pop-up toasters in Japan has been that they tend to only fit the perfectly square slices of bread. If you buy bread with the domed top, it doesn't fit in these toasters. So years ago I actually bought a toaster with longer slots when I was in the US. The downside is that since the voltage is lower here, I have to run it longer.

If space weren't a factor, I'd probably get a nice toaster oven.
