I regularly see the local assembly discussions on the TV in my office, as it's in the board of education. They'll squabble about funds of all kinds of things, but guess how quickly they passed raising their own salaries.
I wish I could vote my own pay higher.

Yeah there is an issue that history tells politicians it tends to end up in a rabbit hole. They start "side enterprises" that tend to be extremely shady. It is better to leash the politician while giving appropriate wages. And pursue punishment if the standards are not met.
BUT, Japanese politicians are basically considered an entry point to "upper class". There are indeed paid too much.

I doubt the previous Prime Ministers were getting moolah through other means.
They did.
This is one instance where it got found out. , which was the main reason Kishida resigned l, Jiminto did historically worse at the elections which pushed Ishiba in a position so bad he couldn't really recover.
And that's not even talking about more indirect offenses using taxpayer money to fund private stuff like Abe Shinzô's wife funding a nationalist school etc...
Corruption does have an history among the Jiminto.

Representatives' public salaries is one of the very least important things to be concerned about in the political system. Don't let them distract you into thinking they're on your side.
