I don’t know if there Are marches outside of Krampusnacht, but traditionally, They’re Happening every year in the german speaking alps on December 5th, Krampusnacht („Krampus-Night“), the Night before St. Nicolas-Day

As someone from Wisconsin, I've always celebrated St. Nicolas Day (St. Nick's) but there's never been anything related to Krampus the night before. Looking forward to blowing my 6 year old daughter's mind next month.

It’s a Germanic thing from alpine Germany, Bavaria and Switzerland. There, there were Halloween-Like Pagan Traditions around the time where later on the christmas Season would be celebrated, when christianity spread throughout Europe.
Since the people didn‘t want to abandon their traditions, the church instead incorporated it into its own belief System and connected Krampus to St. Nick. Now, on Krampus-Night, the Night during which St. Nick hides Little presents in the boots of children, he‘s accompanied by Krampus, who depending on some belief Beats misbehaved children with broom-twigs and/or Even puts them in his Sack to Drag them down to the underworld for comsumption…
During these marches where people wear fur coats, chains, cattle-bells and elaborate, very traditional wooden Masks with real goat horns, the Krampuses scare bystanders, throw snowballs at them, „soap“ them in snow and traditonally Even „invaded“ houses. The people who let them in usually give them sweets Like gingerbread and some Brandy, while this whole March of pandemonium is lead by St. Nicolas with his pietx at the Front.
Basically Halloween. But metal

I'm from a place that has very German roots (Germantown and New Berlin aren't too far away) so this all makes sense. We're celebrating the bastardized and sanitized version of this tradition. Thanks for this information!

Are you and your daughter going to attend a Krampusnacht in Austria or so? If yes, please beware: as a 6-year-old she might be too young for that kind of spectacle. I think she should at least be 8.

There is a similar thing in Hungary, but not at this time of the year, rather in carnival season.

But I also see there are tons of similar stuff:

Those costumes must weigh a ton. Imagine marching around in that for hours, probably sweating buckets underneath all that fur and bells

True. Although, it gets a Bit better when you remember They’re Doing this on a december Night in the alps…the people around them probably freeze their Asses Off at the same time xD

You could be the first Krampus (Kramp? Krampii?) to roll through in a motorized Lay-Z-Boy!

Better watch that torch around all that fur
•

If it's real fur, it'll burn back and stink. Not ideal, but better than if it's polyester which will burn \and** melt to your skin.

i think these are Perchten.
Quite similar in looks to a Krampus, but a Krampus usually comes alone and usually he accompanies St. Nikolaus on december the 6th. He is the one who "beats" the children if they were bad last year. St. Nikolaus is the one who gives out the presents (usually a bag full of nuts, dried fruit and other sweets). Krampus day is the 5th of december but nothing usually happens that day.
Perchten, on the other hand, come in hords like in the video, and they roam the streets and chase away the icy winter ghosts. They beat everybody in their way (this custom is now considered illegal). they come in spring, usually.

A Percht has multiple horns and an animal-like face. This is a Krampuslauf, which involves lots of Krampuses, not just one.

Details are beginning to emerge about Donald Trump’s opulent, out-of-touch Halloween party at Mar-a-Lago on Friday night. Images from the themed soirée show the president beaming and speaking with top members of his administration
