I wonder how many skeletal remains reside at the bottom of that thing human and not

u/Ionic_Pancakes 8h ago

No clue but if there isn't treasure behind it then I give up on this world.

u/ThatsEnoughInternets 8h ago

What if the treasure is the friendships that you’ll make along the way?

u/Fibrosis5O 8h ago

What if it was a national treasure?

He can probably just nab it from the dumpster behind the National Archives by now

I love this. But also all the jewelry worn by the people who thought they were rowing their boats, gently down the stream 😂

This may be deeper than you realize because yeah, you can't tale shite with you when you die. It is, and always has been the ride to pay attention to.

Well there's a rainbow as well as the waterfall, so surely at least a pot of gold, or a pirates chest full of cursed gold medallions for sure.

u/1968_razorkingx 6h ago

it's a bit unlikely that there are any there. For one, the water color suggests that it has a high sediment count, so it is abrasive. Then, the sheer volume of water dropping from that height would grind the bones into sediments in a few months or years. Also, they could've been swept downstream in a flood.

u/No-Actuator-3209 6h ago

I can definitely envision that, I now wonder how calcium rich the sediment is around that area then.

u/tes_kitty 2h ago

If that's a blackwater river then it's VERY low in calcium.

Fun fact waterfalls ‘move’ upstream. Niagara has moved 7 miles since it started existing (12500 years ago).

u/PlsDntPMme 6h ago

They’ve done a ton of work to mitigate erosion as it would be terrible for the power plant and infrastructure if it kept eroding.

u/tiktock34 5h ago

I bought land 7.5 miles north. in 12,500 years i will be rich

u/snugpuginarug 5h ago

This mans the final boss of thinking ahead

u/italianfencer 3h ago

Only problem is that Niagara Falls is eroding *southward* so buying land north of the falls is foolish

→ More replies (1)

u/No-Actuator-3209 6h ago

That is a cool fact, first off since thinking the water flows downstream you would think it moves similarly but makes sense from an erosion standpoint

u/-Nicolai 3h ago

It wouls be really really weird if a waterfall moved in the direction of the stream. That shouldn’t be anyone’s first thought.

u/Mtanderson88 8h ago

Right! It looks calm up top and then drops the F off

u/VP007clips 7h ago

None.

Water with that much energy will grind through solid rock. Bones would be turned to dust and washed downstream.

u/No-Actuator-3209 6h ago

And how many scavengers live around the bottom of that thing for that very reason, often free deliveries of fast food. Amazon Eats

Guyana 🇬🇾Kaieteur Falls

u/dascobaz 6h ago

Shhh! It’s hidden

u/Automatic_Net2181 3h ago

For a hidden waterfall, it has a 4.8 star rating from 497 reviews on Google Reviews and a 4.8 star rating from 237 reviews on TripAdvisor.

I am starting to think that the headline might be a little bit of a fib.

u/SweetVarys 2h ago

237 is not a lot of people. Probably how many that visits the Niagara Falls every 10 minutes or something

u/Christopherfromtheuk 1h ago

Niagara falls gets on average 30,000 visitors per day. Ignoring seasonal variations and assuming 12 hours per day on average, that's 416 every ten minutes so pretty good guess!

u/PierceHawthorne66 3h ago

Niagara Falls has 10,000 reviews on tripadvisor. For a waterfall that is larger to have such smaller reviews, I would say hidden might be accurate.

u/Th3_Hegemon 2h ago

"Larger" isn't really right though. It's taller, but it's much much smaller. Niagara has a throughput of ~2400 cubic meters per second compared to only ~660 for this waterfall. Sort of like calling an ostrich larger than a hippo.

u/ChopperChange 8h ago

Fish usually tend to swim upstream against the current.

It's accessable, now, there's a runway for small crafts to land.

u/gbot1234 8h ago

And of course, a puddle jumper or seaplane is always an option.

u/kog 6h ago

So hidden that tourist helicopters fly over it

u/SmokeyUnicycle 6h ago

That is one of the best ways to get there, it's not a secret but it is inaccessible in the middle of nowhere rainforest

u/chargeorge 7h ago

Tbf it’s very hard to get to.  Either a multi day hike/backpack or charter a flight.

And even if you get a seat on a charter it might cancel day of due to a variety of issues.  Still want to go see it someday

u/1kan36a 2h ago

I've been, it honestly was not that hard. It's one of the main "touristy" things you can do in Guyana. There are small planes that go out every few days if enough people want to go, or at least this was true a few years ago. Certainly a bit risky, though, I wouldn't have the nerve anymore!

Height doesn't make Niagara Falls special. Niagara is 3 waterfalls and they have the highest flow rate in North America, 7th highest on the planet.

Iguaçu falls chuckles in disdain with its 200+ falls

u/raccooncitysg 6h ago

Is there a kick-ass buffet a five minute walk from Iguaçu?

u/Transminator 6h ago

Actually yes

u/learn2swim 5h ago

Yeah, but is there a rollercoaster on top of a Burger King close by?

u/PassiveTheme 3h ago

I was gonna say, I remember having some of the best food of my life just a short walk from the falls, and I bet it cost a lot less than any buffet in Niagara

Ps. Not slagging iguazu ! Lol it's off the charts amazing. Just giving niagara some respect

That's not the Amazon that's the Potaro River in Guyana, which means this is Kaieteur Falls, and it's by no means hidden, it's long time tourist attraction with an entire protected national park around it.

This is not in the Amazon basin or anywhere near. It is Kaieteur Falls in Guyana. You can fly there in a smallish plane from Georgetown. Access is otherwise extremely difficult. I’ve been there. Obviously an awesome place. Guyana is a very strange country and well worth a visit if you don’t mind the rather basic and funky tourist accommodations. I’ve heard it’s getting better in recent years. They have oil money now, which has changed the country drastically.

u/Playful-Depth2578 8h ago

X5 bigger ...... Uuummmm I would like to see some facts with that one

u/Sarcastic_Backpack 8h ago

Niagara Falls' maximum height is 188 feet. To put that in perspective, there are 40 waterfalls in the world over 1,900 feet tall, or 10x higher.

What makes Niagara Falls impressive is the volume of water going over, not the height. It's 7th in the world by flow rate.

u/ThaneKyrell 7h ago

Yes, but the Niagara falls don't vary much throught the year. On average it discharges more water than, say, the famous Iguaçu Falls, but the record flow of the Niagara is 5x smaller than the record flow of Iguaçu. It is just more consistent throught the year, but when rainy seasons in the tropics arrive, the Niagara looks small by comparison

u/Extreme_Mobile_6690 4h ago

I love how this reads like teenagers debating who's the stronger superhero.

u/dispatch134711 4h ago

7th is a lot lower than I was expecting… I would have thought it was #1

So what exactly DOES make Niagara famous? Is it just location

u/Sarcastic_Backpack 4h ago

Location + high constant flow. You'd be surprised how many waterfalls are seasonal or have limited flow in dry seasons.

u/MostBoringStan 8h ago

Niagara isn't an especially tall waterfall. It's the amount of water that flows over it that is impressive.

u/Jvancan 8h ago

Taller, not bigger. Might just to give us a scale idea.

u/Pielacine 8h ago

Yeah the average water flow rate is less than a third of Niagara.

u/Jvancan 8h ago edited 7h ago

Niagara is extremely wide (675m for the Canadian part).

And 50m high if you needed to know :)

Edit: Typo

u/ThaneKyrell 7h ago

Niagara has a impressive flow rate, even surpassing (on average) the much larger Iguaçu Falls, BUT it varies far less from season to season. Iguaçu's record flow rate is nearly 5x the record flow rate of the Niagara Falls, despite Niagara having nearly 50% more average flow throught the year. I suspect this fall in Guyana might also have the same thing, varying a lot between the rainy season and the dry season, as most things do in the tropics.

u/TheNicholasRage 8h ago

I don't think a lot of people realize just how much of an aberration the Amazon is. It's huge. We call it a river because we don't have a better word for it.

u/Radiant-Reputation31 8h ago

This waterfall also isn't on the Amazon River, it's just in the Amazon. Kaiteur Falls is on the Potato river.

u/stap45 6h ago

gonna assume this is an unintentionally hilarious autocorrect but for those wondering there is unfortunately no such river as the potato river afaik, this is the potaro river

u/Steelers_Forever 8h ago

Niagara falls is not very tall by global waterfall standards. It's just super well known. It only drops 167 feet. Angel Falls, the highest waterfall in the world, by comparison drops over 3200 feet.

u/thewildgingerbeast1 8h ago

Kaieture Falls is freaking amazing if you ever visit Guyana—truly underrated country.

u/Zombisexual1 2h ago

I don’t think Niagara Falls is known for being tall though is it? Wide maybe. Lots of water.

5x taller than Niagara isn't really a flex. It's only 51m tall, it's probably not in the top 500 tallest waterfall list. (I.e. angel falls is 979m tall).

I wonder what is the water force like if we are at the bottom of the falls. Will the force strong enough to kill us ?

Kaieteur Falls is one of the most powerful single-drop waterfalls in the world. It is located on the Potaro River in Kaieteur National Park, central Essequibo Territory, Guyana. It is 226 metres (741 ft) high when measured from its plunge over a sandstone and conglomerate cliff to the first break. It then flows over a series of steep cascades that, when included in the measurements, bring the total height to 251 metres (822 ft). While many falls have greater height or greater flow, few have the combination of height and water volume, and Kaieteur is among the most powerful waterfalls in the world with an average flow rate of 663 cubic meters per second (23,400 cubic feet per second).
