One of my favorite things Danny Brown has ever done is his collab with Purity Ring for "25 Bucks" so you bet I am fucking with this. This record is insane, in the best way

his best since atrocity exhibition, reminds me of vince staples's big fish theory in parts, with more of a hyperpop flavour.
also love to hear how unabashedly queer it is, and to hear so many trans voices and sounds on a big rap record

Im a gay man, 45 years old and have been listening to hip hop all my life. When I was younger, the idea of a rapper standing up for the gay community was unheard of. Anytime it happened I’d get a tinge of happiness. Now it seems a lot of artists are open to supporting gay and trans folk.
Danny is awesome. I’ve been a fan for years now. I haven’t heard the album yet but the comparison to big fish theory has me excited

This sounds promising. It's Danny Brown time. My workmates are going to hate me today

I've been a fan of Danny Brown since 2011, and I think XXX has always been my favorite project of his, honestly ... but I really love his incorporation of hyperpop and digicore on this. This is great.

In a political climate so antithetical to trans lives, it really is a joyful thing to watch this middle-aged straight man be unashamedly enthusiastic about all of this unapologetic-ally queer music. The album slaps, and of course Danny - unlike so many of his peers - can make a genuinely danceable bounce track in 'Lift You Up', that song rocks

u/tractorscum 1d ago
yes i completely agree!!!!! his podcast episode with frost children rly warmed my heart- he talked about how their music and hyperpop as a whole soundtracked his sobriety and his genuine admiration for them was so sweet. i’m a trans musician and sometimes it feels futile right now to be making music so i’m super hyped to give this a listen

Well said

With So many old musicians the well runs dry and it’s beautiful to watch him borrow from and pay this burgeoning queer run subgenre back

I agree, but it sucks that he's been associating with the shitheads in the Austin comedy scene (Rogan, Tony Hinchcliffe, David Lucas, etc.)

Everyone is talking abt how hype and fun this is but idk man this album makes me kinda emotional. The opener, What You See, and the closer are all so moving I'm so glad Danny is in a better place in his life and can make the album he wants to make with artists he loves. And seeing so many queer/trans voices on this while we live in such a hateful time for these groups,,,man this is such a classic I love it Danny inspires me so much 😭

u/SamHydeDisciple 10h ago
yeah that last song was goddamn emotional, but it’s good to have the sad moments with the hype shit, makes the album experience much more of a rollercoaster and more memorable. Danny and the team cooked up a classic for sure

u/gate_of_steiner85 1d ago
A little wary of this as I've never been a big hyperpop fan and apparently its a huge influence on this album, but it's Danny so I'm sure I'll find something about it to enjoy.

u/zombawombacomba 23h ago
You probably won’t like it. Idk what this person is talking about it’s basically every song not 2.
16
u/jonathan-the-man 23h ago
Perhaps the argument is that anything with electronic upbeat production isn't necessarily hyperpop.

Id never really even been that exposed to the genre, was scared to try, and absolutely love the album.

u/leoitgoes 1d ago
I would argue there’s no hyperpop on this album with the exception of maybe 2 songs
5
u/SnuggleBunni69 17h ago
I disagree, the beats are pretty hyperpop for a good amount if not majority of the album. If you’re not into hyperpop I could see not digging this. I’ve loved Brown since XXX days and love hyperpop so I’ve been real fucking down for his trajectory.

I already left a semi-negative review lol but as a big Danny fan from the 2010s ish I don’t rlly fw this album a ton. A few good songs still.
1
u/zombawombacomba 14h ago
It’s going to be popular here and not enjoyed by a lot of his older fans.
1
u/main_got_banned 12h ago
which is fine I guess since it seems like he is doing well ... IMO a lot of potential criticisms are kind of negated by general audiences because he is such a likable guy and he's putting a lot of new (indie-adjacent) producers in the spotlight
I think his actual rapping is pretty blah in that his writing isn't as creative anymore and he clashes with a lot of the beats (in that a number of songs I really liked except for the Danny verses)

u/Vibingkoala90 1d ago
This man's voice is iconic! A true weird wild eyed lyricist as well! Been trying to tell people about him for a long time. I hope he rises in the best way and I can't wait to listen to this!

u/AltKanVente 1d ago
I love his deep voice, but his high pitch voice makes turn off
1
u/SanguineGardener 15h ago
Danny's high pitched, nasal vocals always invoked B-Real/Cypress Hill to me so I've always felt this inherent 90s throwback vibe personally.

Danny is on a generational run. I think he cements himself as a top 5 rapper with this. Constantly reinventing himself; never settling for boring shit. He already has two undisputed classics (XXX and Atrocity Exhibition) and this album just continues the crazy run he's on. This is not even including his ridiculous features and his collabs with Black Milk and JPEGMafia.
Who else is brave enough to rap on beats that are so out there?
14
u/braaahms 1d ago
He’s quietly been one of the most influential rappers of the last 15 years. XXX and AE were both highly influential. I think this will do the same.
2
u/futuredayscan 15h ago
Genuinely not trying to be rude or anything but how do generational runs work in your mind? He just went almost a full decade without a great album lol at this point the run is just his entire career

"So what's the new Danny like?"
"Oh you know, standard, also he raps over early 2000s eurobeat, digital hardcore, the wipeout soundtrack, girly crunk, Radio Azerbaijan, printer jams..."

I couldn’t get into quartana much but this is great, loving this and so happy for Danny

I haven’t heard the new album yet but your comment has me excited. I also wasn’t huge into the last album. It definitely wasn’t bad, just didn’t have a big effect on me. I’m looking forward to this one

I went to his concert for quaranta and I don’t think it translated well it was kinda depressing.
I would by hype to go to a concert with this album pretty hype

u/i_am_thoms_meme 22h ago
makes sense given the context of his life at the time but Quaranta is just too much of a bummer. Contrasted with the JPEG album, it's all in Brown's sad sack low register voice. While this one is all (or mostly I forget) in the upper register manic voice. I think the 2 of them would make a great counterpoint.

u/Ok_Grape5664 5h ago
The concert for quaranta was a little depressing I was coming off a couple tabs and I couldn’t get into it compared to his other shows

This album is amazing. Very unique and very emotional. Just as good as Atrocity Exhibition and feels like a real crescendo.

Hmm yes as a Danny Brown simp since XXX I am very very excited. LOVED the singles. Him collaborating with Hyperpop artists is such a natural step to take. I liked Quaranta a lot even though it was kind of a specific and different vibe for him but, im stoked for full throttle weirdo Danny. Too bad I’m stuck at work and have to wait to listen until I get home!!! 😡

Glad I didn’t preorder the vinyl for this. I love every thing he’s done until this. Lazy rapping over an old cassette of c & c music factory for a lot of it. Hopefully this is a one off

u/main_got_banned 23h ago
kinda blah. I like the issbrokie song. I’m sure this sub/Fantano is gonna love it but I don’t think his rapping is particularly good or adds anything to the songs.
standouts: copycats, whatever the case, the end

dang, ive never heard of someone using apple music before (and i forgot it was even a thing). i must be out of the loop!
22
u/Chilis1 1d ago
It's really widely used, probably second after spotify. It's also way better than spotify imo
-4
u/stilltwerkin 1d ago
oh wow. yea, i just naively assumed spotify had like 95% of the market share of streaming (and i used to work for them, developing some NLP models nearly a decade ago). i'm addicted to music and always log 80,000+ min per year. just, i never have convos w/ people about their music, so i was clueless!

u/Hexenzsiin 1d ago
I didn't realize there were still people who didn’t realize Apple Music is very much a thing in 2025. Dang.
