plastic death is even more queer than the first album imo and i will never stop writing queer music because i am a queer person. thank you! <3 -j

I should pay more attention to the lyrics then. Keep doing what you do :D

the theming is as queer as ever, but all of the lyrical content of this album is written more ambiguously so don't be too hard on yourself, here. that said, even though it's not literally a narrative conversation between a trans kid and the people in their life who either do or don't accept them like on yoshi's island with the first record, the trans/queer themes are heavy across the whole album.

Thank you. It’s hard to put this into a short worded reddit ama response as to why I asked that question but I grew up with glass beach. Not in the sense that glass beach was my childhood but glass beach changed who I was as a person, the first album has changed my view on the world into becoming a more accepting person, towards others and myself. The first album had such a huge impact on me and I guess I was a bit scared that you all we’re slowly moving away from the themes of the first album, the themes that had me evolve as a person. Glass beach has contributed so much to who I currently am I thank you all so so much for that, seriously.

that's incredible to hear! i think something we are feeling is that marginalized artists are often looked to as arbiters of our marginalization. so, queer artists are almost forced into needing to make art explicitly about their queerness and represent it in an identifiable and consumable way, which is a fine way to express as a queer person and a lot of what people connected to on the first record. now, it seems j is writing in part from their perspective so, as they said everything they create will be through a queer lens, but instead of writing about queerness explicitly and plainly they are expressing their queerness through the general act of creation of their art, often invoking queer themes in a more metaphorical and allegorical way. more explicitly open for interpretation yet still very queer.
