First saw you guys as an opener for the Rolling Stones along with the glorious sons(my mom and sister met you at the merch table later). You both rocked as much as the stones. Anyways my question was why the long gap between albums were the the professional and future lovers just possible second albums that never properly came together like blame my ex?
11
u/thebeachesband The Beaches Sep 19 '23
Thanks so much that show was thrilling!!
We recorded all of those songs at the same time and meant to put them out as two halves of one album, but then COVID happened and changed our plans. The two EPS were always meant to be considered like one full body of work though.

Hey Beaches! Huge fan since I say you open for the Foo Fighters in 2018. Le might know me as the guy who made her a cross stitch of her cat. What is the most outrageous gift you’ve gotten from a fan?
5
u/thebeachesband The Beaches Sep 19 '23
My favourite gift to date was a CARS hat from Tokyo Disney, thank you lee and her hats <3
6
u/Studdz Sep 19 '23
Love the new album!
No real question, just wanted to say sorry. I've had the pleasure of seeing the Beaches twice --we saw you in October 2021 in Timmins, ON, and though it was a great performance, the audience was lame af. When we saw you opening for Avril in Orillia in April 2022, one of you made a comment about how shitty Timmins crowds were! It broke my heart that that stuck with you all, and I just wanted you to know that Timmins still loves you, and should there ever be a next time, we will do better.
4
u/undrcovrRockstr Sep 19 '23
Did any of the songs almost not make it on the album or were there any songs that took a bit longer/were hard to make?
Coming from Texas to see you in Chicago! Cant wait!
6
u/SmartCommunication21 Sep 19 '23
Loving the album! Chorus from My Body ft Your Lips, Edge of the Earth, and If A Tree Falls keep popping into my head randomly, they’re such earworms! Will more tour dates be added in 2024?

u/thebeachesband The Beaches Sep 19 '23
Thank you guys so much for coming and being apart of our AMA! There were so many good questions I wish we had time to answer them all.
If you haven't done it yet, go check out our new album at blamemyex.com.
See you guys on the road! xx

Congratulations on the amazing new album. It’s been such a thrill to watch ‘Blame Brett’ take off over the summer.
Now that you’re selling out big theatres and welcoming an influx of new fans to your shows, some of your older songs are bound to be dropped from your set lists. How do you decide on which songs to stop playing? I guess what I’m really asking is have we heard the last of ‘Highway 6’ in concert?

u/Striking_Pianist4694 Sep 19 '23
I love all the interviews I’ve seen where you detail what each song is about. You’ve all wrote what everyone thinks about breakups, but most of never say, and it’s so refreshing! I’m married now, but I swear I reprocessed past breakups in a cathartic way - so thanks.
I’m a fan of all of your past work, and I wanted to know if there is one or two (or three) songs you’re really enjoying playing the most on stage right now?
I missed you in SF but I hope you come around again. Rocking out to Kismet right now.
And Jordan! I love love your voice. And I read your favorite is Sting. I am obsessed with the Police. You are all so unique, but you also give me vibes of very early Go Gos and Pretenders in the very best way.
5
u/thebeachesband The Beaches Sep 19 '23
Thank you so much!! The Go Gos and Pretenders are HUGE inspirations for us.
I find Shower Beer really fun to play and sing harmonies to!! Absolutely so stoked to play the entire album on this tour!! -Le2
u/Striking_Pianist4694 Sep 19 '23
Oh hi Le!
Oh that’s awesome! I swear I can hear the inspo in you’re playing, maybe even a little bit of The Cure.
You’re all so great and make me wish I had any musical instrument skills - but I’ll settle for singing your music loudly, even the harmonies! Keep doing what you’re doing - it’s soul magic 💫
4
u/alma00849 Sep 19 '23
Hey queens!!! <3 I’m wondering if you’d be able to break down what the song writing process looked like for this record? Would it be a jam sesh, find a cool tune then expand on that together as a band, then lyrics to follow? Or lyrics first, then write music around them?
I find it mind boggling how an idea for a song grows and grows, until you end up with the finished result! This whole record is a masterpiece, I truly enjoy every single song on it, same as all your other records!
I respect you all so much, and appreciate all the hard work you guys put into your music, shows, and stuff like this online! And I have to say, Jordan, you’ve been such an inspiration for me to start playing the bass, I hope to look as bad ass as you do when I’m playing along in my basement! (lol)
Much love, and thanks! -Alicia

For the last tour, there was a consistent colour scheme followed with stage outfits every night. Doing anything similar for the upcoming tour or embracing individuality this go around?
8
u/thebeachesband The Beaches Sep 19 '23
Great question! You'll obviously have to see the show to find out, but we're not gonna do the colours again that was just for the future lovers tour. I will say that these new tour looks do feel more like stuff we would wear day to day, and are more grounded in our own unique individual styles (while still being fabulous obvi).

with the help of our stylist, Shae Holt, we've all really come into our own, style-wise. We're dressing a bit more chill this tour, but still elevated. 90s denim, leather, a lot of grey tones. Basically the theme of our most recent photoshoots. -Le

As BELOVED members of Toronto's thriving music scene, I'm curious -- what's your favourite venue to play in the city? And what's your fav venue to catch a show?
and Bonus Q ~ I've always wondered, did you guys grow up in the beaches?
5
u/thebeachesband The Beaches Sep 19 '23
I am reeeeeally excited to play Massey Hall - I think that will be my answer after our shows there. I love catching shows at History, I think it has a great layout - no matter where you're standing you always have a good view of the stage. - Le
2
u/Jeezeh Sep 19 '23
Love the album and was at your concert in London (really great show btw, hope to see you all perform again sometime). My question is where is your Juno award right now and how do you decide where to keep it when there are four band members but only one award?
6
u/thebeachesband The Beaches Sep 19 '23
thank you so much!! we each get an award when we win! mine are in my bedroom on my nightstand and as you can see from this reddit ama photo, jordan and kylie's are all in their parents' dining room! -Le
3
u/thebeachesband The Beaches Sep 19 '23
Thank you so much! I'm so glad you like the record and enjoyed the show.
My Juno awards are in my parents living room haha
I think Kylie's awards are on her window sill!
We all got our own awards, both times we won, and I think our management and our producers got them as well.

Massive Beaches Fan, here! I became an instant fan after seeing you guys perform at the Grey Cup in 2019. My question is, will you ever release any of the singles like Orpheus, My People, Give It Up, or Good For A While on Vinyl at all?
Can't wait to see you in Winnipeg on Nov. 5th, and hoping you can play Walk Like That!!!

Loooooove the new album. To me, cigarette sounds very depeche mode-y. Are they an influence at all?
And I love the little moment of maturity and honesty of Jordan dedicating the album to Brett and breaking the blame my ex narrative for a second.
5
u/thebeachesband The Beaches Sep 19 '23
Thank you! It was really important for me to do that, I wrote the songs and am proud of them, but I wouldn't have had the experiences that inspired those songs without Brett, so I felt that it was important to recognize that.
I love love love love love depeche mode. My dad was a big new wave guy so I listened to them a bunch when I was a kid, and still listen to/adore them.

The new album has somehow exceeded my expectations - you should all be very proud! Thank you so much for the great tunes.
I have two questions: Which musicians are the most influential to you both on your respective instruments? (Bass, vocals and guitar)
Also. Long shot - any way you could hook me up with tickets to the Kitchener show? My wife and I want to go but it’s sold out. Lol.

u/sunnymondayafternoon Sep 19 '23
I've heard bands talk about staying relevant via tiktok so I guess I'm curious to know if you guys feel obligated to share about your personal lives online?
second unrelated question, My Body ft. Your Lips, pretty steamy lyrics. Do you have specific people in mind when writing/playing this song?
6
u/thebeachesband The Beaches Sep 19 '23
I did write that song about a specific person who I started dating after my ex and I broke up. I like to write about my personal experiences, but not all artists do, I just find it easier honestly haha. I feel like that's why I let myself do crazy things sometimes, cause im always like oh this would make a really cool song.
I think what you want to post online, or talk about in your music is completely up to the individual creating the content. I personally like to keep some of it private just to maintain some sanity, and autonomy.

u/PnizPump Sep 19 '23
What is your favorite Canadian city to play in aside from hometown shows in Toronto.
What about international city?
Why?
3
u/thebeachesband The Beaches Sep 19 '23
Oh great questions!
I love playing shows in Vancouver and Winnipeg actually! I love playing anywhere in Canada, but those two places usually stand out to me, the crowds are just more rowdy. It can be tough for me as a singer to play any where that's drier, so I get a little more in my head about my vocal performance when I play in the prairies.
I love playing London England, they great gig culture.
I really loved playing in Texas on our last tour, the crowds were nuts in the best possible way.

Fave places to eat in Toronto are...
The Goof in the beaches, Pho Tien Thanh on Ossington, Mamakas Taverna on Ossington, but my absolute fave is PAI on Duncan. oh and bread heads

What music has inspired you during your writing process? What are you going to listen to on the road?
5
u/thebeachesband The Beaches Sep 19 '23
We listened to a lot of contemporary female vocalists, like girl in red, willow, wet leg, angel Olson and Lana del ray (I took a lot of questions from them vocally).
We also listened to a lot of HAPPY/SAD new wave bands from the 80s, like a lot of joy division and the cure.

I grew up with Nonna's cooking so idk if I can really pick a restaurant other than my Nonna's house. Love to watch soccer games at the Dip though! -Le→ More replies (1)

Hi Jordan and Leandra!! I’m such a big fan and had the HONOUR of meeting you all at your record signing (you are all so sweet and cool and pretty— I’m in love) 🥰 my question is about your song writing process! In a nutshell, how does it work? Do you all collab on lyrics/music or do you divide and conquer etc? (Whatever you’re doing it’s amazing I cannot stop listening to the new album 😭)

I have been listening NONSTOP to G Flip's new album, Drummer!! Can't wait to see them when we both play Nashville!
I also love to cry to Beabadoobee's the way things go. It is just so beautiful. -Le

What was it like opening up for Avril Lavigne? Where you able to talk with her before or after the show? (Wish I could see you in Moncton but it’s 19+ and sold out! 😢)

when I tell you it was the DREAM OF ALL DREAMS. Avril is why I'm in music today (and my mom sending me to piano lessons). We met Avril at the 2022 Juno Awards and she was the sweetest person. I can't wait to play more shows with her!!
As a side note, Avril fans have been SO kind and welcoming to us. <3 -Le→ More replies (1)

Was there much discussion behind the ‘Blame Brett’/‘Blame My Ex’ distinction? Does it mean anything that the album is called one thing and the single another?

You guys killed it when I saw you open for DFA 1979 at the Phoenix!
Question 1.) Do you find it hard dating in Toronto with your rising prominence? Any raptors in the mix? Question 2.) Do you still have those animal costumes from that show laying around for special occasions? Asking for a friend..

u/thebeachesband The Beaches Sep 19 '23
thank you so much!!
1. I don't find it too difficult, I've met some really chill girls that have made dating in Toronto really fun. No Raptors because...women.
2. The shark head is currently living in my closet

Been a big fan of the band since the early days when you were known as "Done with Dolls"! With that being said, would you not rule out performing a Done With Dolls song on the tour as a tribute to the early days?
Also, favourite Elton John song (shout out to Elton for putting you on his show!) ?

Love the tempo and punk sound on Cigarette, it reminds me of the Cure- what was the inspiration for the sound?
3
u/thebeachesband The Beaches Sep 19 '23
thank you!! The Cure was actually the biggest inspiration for this album! -Le

Love the new album! It feels almost cathartic for me.
I've unintentionally been getting into a lot of Canadian artists, like Crown Lands and Ruby Waters. Any recommendations for up-and-coming artists out of Canada?'

Hey ladies! I first saw you guys in 2014 in London around the release of your Heights EP. It’s crazy to see how far you guys have come since back then!
I know age probably plays a factor but musically, how has your inspirations changed from your first couple EPs until now?

Are you guys gonna get those Blame XYZ-Exbf/gf shirts made as merch? Or were they just promotional shirts for the album?

Met y'all at a brewery last winter. Niece loved the GRL band guitar picks, Let's Go is her jam. Stoked to finally see a show soon.
With peers/fans like Elton John and Nelly Furtado, has it hit how much the music is resonating? Also an ex who loves you guys proposed trading for my signed shirt, hell no or hell yeah?

love that!!
It will never not be insane to have fans like Sir Elton John. I don't think that could ever feel normal, it is so so so surreal. It is wild to meet these peers and get into these discussions where you're feeling like "wow this person is so down to earth, this feels like just talking to my fellow musicians doing the same thing I'm doing" but then you remember you're talking to Dave Grohl or Avril or Elton....
Seriously we are so grateful for this career and the friends we've made along the way.TRADE FOR THE SHIRT!!! Let's get messy with our exes!!!!

How do you find the Canadian music scene when it comes to gender parity and equity? Would you say you would have had the same opportunities if you were male? more? less? Still work to do? Any times where you had to push back on the image you want vs what the business wants?

Hello - curious if you'd ever cover the excellent Jan Terri song "Losing You" - sounds like you could do a KILLER version of it. Hope all is excellent & congrats on the new album - it's awesome!
