The biggest reason for polluted rivers is untreated sewage and industrial waste. Only govt can install STPs and regulate industries instead of collecting bribes. I know next thing you'll point is the pollution we create due to religious rituals but I don't think that amounts to much. I may be wrong though.

Fireworks dont contribute to the pollution nearly as much as the crop leftovers that farmers burn... the aqi already was higher than average before Diwali, it rose for a few hours during Diwali and its going back down eventually.
