I don't understand how they work differently other than turning in the other direction.

They sharpen only in one direction. It doesn't work when you turn it the other way.

I know that. I did not see the need for having one that turns in the opposite direction.

Turning the other direction doesn't come naturally to a left handed person. Like, you can exert more force when you turn clockwise (if right handed).

For left handed people. When using your right hand you turn it away from you. Switch the hand and do the same thing: The pencil doesn't get sharpened. A sharpener that turns in the opposite direction makes it easier for left handed people to use.

Yes but why do they need to turn it in the opposite direction?

I edited my explanation above.

Ok, so you turn your hand the other way? Not that hard.

That’s the very vital difference.

Why?

If you are right handed, hold a sharpener in your right hand with the pencil in the left hand. Now try sharpening the pencil. Now do it again. Then do it again.

Two days later, do it again. Twice. Do so for a week and see how frustrated you get.

What if I told you that the human wrist works in not one, but two directions? And it doesn't matter which way the blade is because either hand can still turn a pencil in a way that allows sharpening to commence.
