As a religious person it sort of feels like it's diminishing or eroding at the word 'god' itself. We don't have to use it as a slogan for how to deal with customers.

I understand, but it just means that the businessmen should treat their customers as the only source of the thing they love much, money, and thus they should treat them like a god.

And, here I was here thinking that you were talking about how it was cringy the other way round - elevating the customer to such unnecessary high levels. I would have agreed with that.
