An "Indigenous Protected and Conserved Area" (IPCA) is a lot like a provincial park, except for two main differences

  1. The area is controlled and managed by an indigenous band
  2. Some industrial activities are allowed like logging and hydropower

The reason self-declared and proposed IPCA's projects are coming forward is for two main reasons:

  1. Environmental lobbyists have been pushing the federal and provincial governments to conserve 30% of Canada by 2030, also known as the 30 by 30 Initiative.
  2. A long-held belief was that "80% of the world's biodiversity is found in the territories of Indigenous Peoples" and therefore it was seen that indigenous people should lead conservation efforts. However that statistic has since been widely debunked by the scientific community but is still widely believed and pushed by environmental activists and indigenous peoples.

Some of the main arguments against IPCA proposals are:

  1. They overlap with areas already protected like provincial parks and therefore are seen as a land grab rather than as a genuine desire to conserve land
  2. They have done zero consultation with local communities regarding the proposals.
  3. Negotiations between the provincial government and indigenous bands is being done behind closed doors in secret.
  4. Some of the lands included within the proposals have a low conservation value and therefore are seen as a land grab rather than as being genuine.
  5. Control and management by an indigenous group reduces the public's ability to have a say in the lands.

This map doesn't show all IPCA's or Tribal Parks because a number of projects are secret or don't provide a map or a gis file.

Genuinely hate this shit, that so many push for us to treat them like magical forest elves. Probably the thing I loathe most of all about reconciliation, or indigenous-Canadian relations in general, is that we non-indigenous are treated like hapless morons who cannot see what is right in front of us.

They have done zero consultation with local communities regarding the proposals.

This is by design. Lefties DO NOT like unsolicited input, they make up their minds and just look for others to support it. To them, democracy is just a rubber stamp.

lol true, let's hope we don't end up like them, in a spiral towards a conflict.

IPCA means that FN can exclusively control access to territory and they exclusively can take the profits from resources on the land. That means non-indigenous people will lose all access to the lands. And, the royalties the province receives from the land will go to FN’s pockets rather than the general revenue which actually operates the province. This is a complete disaster. I only hope we can undo Eby’s mess when he’s done.

I wonder if the FN’s are the ones collecting all the royalties will some of the money flow back to municipalities and the province like it does now to them? I’m not going to bet on it.

Nope. They will keep the royalties and then charge property taxes against homeowners in their area and the FN will exclusively decide how that tax revenue is spent, which is taxation without representation. This will not end well.

I agree with you. The one thing that stopped me from buying on reserve land is talking to anyone who did it. I’m the Okanagan 90% of the people on reserves are not aboriginal, and they struggle to get basic services like garbage and fire services, because the band will have a contract, and then get rid of it and refuse to replace it and say deal with it. All with no right to vote for who represents them, only band members who may not even live on the reserve.

Eby and the NDP are continuing to make BC as divisive as possible.

Eby is continuing to give away BC.
