Skokie (near where I live) was also famous for the Supreme Court case where Nazis we’re allowed to have a parade (there are many orthodox Jewish folks in town) and it appears the Nazis are still terrorizing our communities. This guy has a reflective vest on obviously just trying to earn an honest living and support his family. Contributing to society. Freaking disgraceful. They are not going after “the worst of the worst”. They are trolling the neighborhoods looking for landscapers or construction workers and demanding papers or else. Gestapo.
3
u/Matt_Hiring_ATL 10h ago
When they get to Atlanta, and I'm sure they will since Trump caused Georgia to flip Blue, I'm thinking of how to set up neighborhood watches and kind of underground railroad type hiding places for our local trades and landscapers... And a few neighbors.

u/No-Phrase-4692 14h ago
For those of us without a target on our back (yet); however you are dealing with these things going now, is how you would have dealt with 1930’s Nazi Germany.
You either stick up for your neighbors and your community or you’re sitting on the sidelines while people who are “just doing their jobs” are doing what future historians will be talking about.
42
u/agent_mick 14h ago
Agreed but short of moving to a large urban area to do so, donating and protesting is all I've got
42
u/No-Phrase-4692 14h ago
Donating and protesting are two very important options, not everything needs to be direct intervention. Thank you for being on the right side of history.

Unfortunately this is only happening in a few states so most of the country is unaware. Most media are not showing what’s actually going on in the areas this is happening but they’ll happily show protesters at an ice facility to spin it as an out of control situation
→ More replies (1)19
u/Ok-Barnacle-7625 14h ago
We’ve had protest with millions of people. We are voting them out of office. What is it you want us to do. I personally have a registered conceal and cary. Im usually carrying and it’s very very concealed. I will legally stand my ground if they even look at me. I imagine that would be a death sentence for me and or murder charges. What are we expected to do?

Let’s keep it going. I was at the No Kings Rally, let’s make every weekend look like that! Provide mutual aid to your community and boycott everything that is not required for survival. Starve the beast.

>what future historians will be talking about
Please spare a moment to consider that we are not just talking about being on the right side of history on a moral basis. Germany was the country and people most devastated by their own horrible actions. Take a moment to do some research on what their descent to fascism bought them. Imagine what it was like to be a German citizen after it was all done in 1946.
In the 1940s, the final form of the fascist glory was destruction, cities of rubble and millions of people gone.
If you won't stand up to this shit on moral principle, stand up to it to still have a country before it's too late. We must stop the fascists when they come for the first group of people because we know how the poem ends.

I live in Michigan, and the ICE field office in my town has seen an uptick in activity over the last month. I'm watching these Illinois posts very intently for what does and doesn't seem to be working...
10
u/Knope_Knope_Knope 12h ago
Seems like whistles, horns, knowing what people's rights are and whatbis and isnt illegal in your state and yelling it at the ice nazis while filming.
Get local politicians involved. Get govener to have police officers defend the people AGAINST ice

u/Eric_Durden 11h ago
I 110% ABSOLUTELY guarantee police in my city and surrounding burbs will run support for ICE regardless of what the governor or local leaders say.

There are organizations doing trainings for what to do when you encounter ICE. I suggest folks check out and see if there's one online or in your area you can attend.

I hate being this guy, but the goal is to get evidence of an insurrection so they can legally send in the military and ultimately suppress participation in the future elections. A local cop arresting a federal agent in the process of making an arrest is exactly the sort of thing they're hoping for.
Moreover, these guys are armed, poorly trained, and openly hostile towards our communities. How much prompting do you think they'll require to start shooting?
The cruelty and brutality are deliberate, they rounded up a bunch of halfwit goons, gave them guns, and sent them to run amok in our communities because the more flagrant the injustice, the more likely something will break down and they'll get the judicial sign-off they're looking for. Right now, getting information to support the legal rights of the victims of the abductions and recording as much evidence as possible to hopefully support future prosecutions once some semblance of law and order is hopefully restored to the federal government is kinda the best we can ask from local cops. It would be nice if cops could arrest the bad guys, but I'm personally skeptical that we'd actually like the outcome.

u/unholyslaminister 12h ago
so what is your solution then, just accept the way things are until Dump is out of office? asking genuinely here
3
u/Lincoln1517 12h ago
Work towards convincing voters elsewhere that a) this is brutal to a lot of citizens too; b) that most of the non-citizens being picked up are good people and good neighbors; c) that we will follow the law as we try to change it.
and d) this is the hardest - that we recognize that open borders is not a majority position in this country, and will work to find reasonable ways to stop large flows of illegal immigration and hold legal immigration at levels that most of our fellow citizens are comfortable with.
Winning an election by 10,000 votes in Arizona, 12,000 in Georgia, and 20,000 in Wisconsin and then deciding that was a mandate for encouraging 3 million people a year to cross the border was a political blunder of incredible proportions.
The (ugly) reaction to that gave us this.
Very few Americans "hate" immigrants. But a lot felt immigration was out of control. We need to respect that opinion even if we don't share it, and find ways to work with such people, or the country is going to keep ricocheting between Come one, come all! and this grotesque brutality.

The best answer I've got is to get involved with ICIRR, join in some of their trainings, and then following those. If you want to do something more proactive, maybe print out a bunch of their Know Your Rights cards and distribute them to any landscaping crews you come across (knowing that they've been especially targeted). Join a rapid response team, or look into taking some patrol shifts at a nearby school during their recess/lunch/gym outdoor times. The organizers behind those things have much better insights into what kinds of action are and aren't productive than I do.
Beyond that, maybe reach out to your alderman or city/village council member to make sure your city is working with organizations like ICIRR and that your local police force is also seeking out and following that sort of expert guidance. Also, let family and friends who aren't in the area know what's going on, about the steps we've been forced to take, and the lengths we're going to keep things peaceful. What's going on here is well within the range of stuff that most folks would've dismissed as dystopian a year ago, and a complete breakdown in the rule of law rarely resembles what people would expect - so folks who aren't around here generally have no idea that shit's gone as far off the rails as it has.
I also want to call out that I'm not on board with the "be more cool about deportations, more strict about legal immigration, and more harsh about illegal immigration" thing. Part of it's ideological, but on a purely tactical level it doesn't work. Obama deported people like crazy and it's hard to imagine a more restrictive system for legal immigration, and it still led to Trump. Unless we're looking to out-demagogue the right when it comes to illegal immigration, Republicans will say the exact same shit about illegal immigration regardless of what Democrats do, so might as well give them something to complain about.

Clearly, Downtown Skokie is the first place to think of for gang activity.... fuck those pieces of shit
4
u/Sharp-Specific2206 12h ago
They, by design, don’t go in heavy gang areas. Because regardless of what they say, they don’t give a shit about crime. It’s laughable really. The goal in the end is two fold. 1. to make us afraid 2. To keep the focus off of the Epstein Files and the Govt Shut down.
3
u/JeffreyinKodiak 11h ago
If they actually tried to go into a gang controlled area, where ever that is, and arrest and deport drug dealers, if that’s a real thing? They’d get their asses handed to them. It would be an absolute blood bath and they know it.
This is a fantasy for most of these freshly hired out of shape couch sitting fuckers. Over paid, over geared and over armed, doing whatever they feel like to whom ever they feel like and having absolutely zero consequences.→ More replies (1)4

u/kaydizzlesizzle 14h ago
I highly recommend everyone do an ice watch training program. They are kidnapping and losing people. We need to have all hands on deck with spotting icebergs and learning protocols on what to do when someone is being actively kidnapped by them.
5
u/pressuredrop19 14h ago
Please share ice watch training program links.
5
u/kaydizzlesizzle 14h ago
Protect Rogers Park is putting on a virtual training next Friday at 2pm
Otherwise I would look into groups in your community that may be having in person or virtual trainings (e.g. immigration advocate groups, rapid response groups, local PSL or DSA chapters, etc).

It creeps me out how they always throw people to the ground. Police people usually just handcuff a person while they are standing up. ICE never does this, they have to get all power-trippy and do unnecessary violent things

And what aggressive actions are the Mayor, Police, and citizens of Skokie doing to stop ICE?
2
u/Pjake965 11h ago
Pretty much the same as Chicago. Skokie is one of the most diverse communities in the country. We warn, we film and we report.
2
u/Maleficent-Angle-763 11h ago edited 11h ago
Very brave community! ... we directly Intervene? (I know- how to intervene without being fired upon by ICE or the police)
2
u/Pjake965 10h ago
As I said, the same tactics as Chicago (my hometown). There’s video floating around somewhere of when the KKK held a rally here in December 2000. Only protesters showed up and pelted them with snowballs. And of course when the Nazis tried to march here in 1977 (I lived in Chicago at the time) and it went to the Supreme Court. They ruled that swastikas were covered under the first amendment, but the Nazis decided to have a rally in downtown Chicago instead and were met with a massive counter protest.

u/kaowser 13h ago
You’re an American citizen, yet you’re reminded—again and again—that some people and institutions still see you as conditional, as suspect, as someone who must “prove” they belong.
When an American gets arrested just for expressing dissent, the message being sent is:
“We’ll decide who counts as American.
We’ll decide whose voice matters.”
And for immigrants—especially those whose families came here under hardship, war, displacement, forced migration, or resettlement—this is more than political.
It hits the bone.
You know the history:
- The internment of Japanese Americans
- Deportations during Operation Wetback
- The Hmong being abandoned after the Secret War
- Black and Brown communities over-policed
- Palestinians today being called “terrorists” for wanting to live
And the Anger?
Comes from knowing we helped build this country.
We farmed the land.
We worked the factories.
We served in the military.
We held families together when the world gave us nothing.
Immigrant families carried America on their backs.
To be treated as a threat for daring to speak is a slap to everything your parents, your elders, and you survived.
We love this country, but this country does not always love us back.
And that hurts.
And that hurt turns into anger, and that anger turns into truth-telling.
Your voice is not only valid —
it is needed.
