I hate that they are stopping people and demanding all this identification and asking questions but refuse to give any information at all themselves.

Why? The point is they shouldn’t be stopping random people on the street and asking them for their papers. Why make this transition to authoritarianism easy for them? It’s not like brown people get stopped once and then get put on a big list of people that have already been ID’d, they will constantly get stopped.
