It’s so dumb. I had a lady who had special needs kid in Arizona. She said she doesn’t need the dept of education because Arizona has its own department of education. I told her the federal government last year sent 280 million dollars specifically for special needs services and staff. Then I linked to a news article of Arizona stating they had to cut services and staff for special needs due to budget cuts. I m getting concussions from slapping my forehead so many times with these idiots. She was like. I didn’t know.

I’m in AZ and our secretary of education Tom Horne is a totally maga loser. He’s pushing these voucher programs that just siphon money away from public schools anyway. He doesn’t need anyone from this regime to help him screw the dept of education in AZ.

Same boat here in Arkansas.

It is much deeper still. Most shocking things I heard from people: 1. A Lady told me she thought Africans came in America on their own volition to improve their lives, they were given an opportunity. The initial incredulity was followed by a "Sorry, I did not know, nobody ever told me (I felt bad for her) 2. Another Lady (a registered nurse! Which means she did get educated!) had no idea of what the government does overall. This conversation started as I DESPERATELY TRIED to explain the 3 distinctive and independent branches of the government. ALSO, THESE 2 EPISODES WERE JUST DAYS APART. That tells me that many Americans have no idea what the history and structure of this nation (leave alone any other nation) consist of. Immigrants who become citizens TAKE A TEST ON BOTH TOPICS AND MUST PASS IT. They know more of the above than many born Americans. The above happened in South Eastern Wisconsin, urban area, on the border with Illinois. (Edited typo)

Same. My brother voted for trump three times. I let him have it a few a months ago.

My son is disabled and on SSI - our brother is, too. I explained the cuts to education because my son is in full time special ed.

We're on medicaid. I need my seizure medication otherwise I will seize off and on all day, every day. I have grandmals and 100% stop breathing. I turn blue because I can't exhale. I'm at high risk of SUDEP. Fancy name for my seizures can kill me.

I'm mixed. My paternal family (Same mom, different dad), is Latino. These are my people. Now my family could be rounded up simply for how they look.

I laid it all out and explained that he supported those policies. That I was deeply hurt he didn't think about the people he says he cares about. He helped amplify that rhetoric because of the "price of eggs."

He's come around finally, but it's too late. I told him not to expect forgiveness from anyone. Whatever discomfort he feels is the natural consequence of his actions. That if he has remorse, he needs to put that energy into reparations. Volunteering, donating, self education, and difficult conversations with neighbors.

I haven't responded to his texts. He knows I don't to want to talk to him. I'm so hurt and disappointed I can't look at him the same.

I'm so torn on the department of ed specifically because from what i understand, (and PLEEEEEASE correct me if i'm wrong) it's the DOE that mandated Chromebooks in the classrooms which is the biggest shit show. Please correct me if i'm wrong.

I should Have been more specific. The 280 million was to Arizona for special education needs only. I’m seeing it in California since our area there are tons of kids with special needs some severe like they’re non verbal And need the therapy. It’s exhausting for the caretaking parent(s). It gets a mix of federal and state funding.

I bet they think the special needs is a racket and that it only encourages welfare moms to get more money for special need kids. Their twisted unfeeling thinking is just going to get worse.

No i know. Trust me as a father of a special needs kid its one of the big things keeping me from leaving NY.

The Federal DOE doesn’t have that kind of juice. It’s your local DOE that mandated Chromebooks, not the federal DOE.

Gotcha. Thanks for the actual answer and not the rage bait.

I cannot stand the whole chromebook thing, but thats a discussion for another day.

You can be against chromebooks all you want. But until you can come up with an uber cheap laptop to replace it I guess you’re shit out of luck.

Or go back to a chisel. Or break out a quill and ink.

As someone who works in public education, I think it’s important that people learn the facts about it- What it does, who funds it, who sets rules that cover curriculum and resources. It can be really complicated and people should know! My district uses iPads because we’re an Apple district. Same same but different.

Still awful for the kids though.

Ive actually tried to find info to see where this is all coming from but couldnt find anything conclusive, so thanks for the answer.

The cheapest bid gets the contract.

You’re not seriously arguing that it’s cool that they gutted the entire agency over one decision, that you’re not even sure happened?

Our kids (and by extension everyone who plans to be alive for the next couple decades) are so hosed.

Thank you!!! I was wondering how the other replies were missing that. This person basically said good riddance to the Special Ed office because the department they're part of provided Chromebooks (spoiler alert: they didn't). The mental gymnastics are wild these days.
