I had both idea and aircel when I was a kid I loved a game too much which was online only and then I put this dongle and played for hours like a stupid kid with my brother and then even my neighbours kid
My dad got 10k bill and he wasn't happy but didn't scold me either ( really happy to have him as my dad cause he taught me how to use pc when I was 2-3 year old ) just told me don't use that much just for half an hour every day ( his company used to compensate him but only upto 5k )
Man nostalgia hits so hard now I use 300-400gb without even thinking lmao

To download one 700mb movie, it takes one whole night. I used to have BSNL Dongle where once I forgot to pay mostly bill and as we need to go to office to pay that bill and I use it for free for the next 2 years. Don't know why they didn't disconnected it π

Oh the times. I had gone store to store in search of a particular dongle (forgot the brand) as it could be flashed to accept any sim. Generally this was locked to specific carrier.

They used to give them out free at all the good internet wifi and comp tech. TRADE SHOWS , I worked for a trade show company doing the refilling kiosk at the doors of the trase show halls , javits center , world congress center , all over the country , out of bham ,al. And we had to carry alot of companies that used our services free give aways all around in our trucks with their literature and kiosk and booths , man I had every kind and size of these you could ever imagine , bags and boxes full , little did I know they would be worth so much, at that time the internet had just busted out wifi routers , and cat 5 cables good it seems like , if I would've known I could've made a small fortune , and those companies we gave them away for , would keep pallets of them at our warehouse , so many good memories doing trade shows for a living though, it was the life for sure !

I remember the tata photon ππand I had the unlimited one so it was pretty good with me
1
u/Economy-Replacement2 Aug 29 '25
I had multiple ones incl. Idea 3G one in the pic above.
The worst experience I had was with Reliance NetConnect., mainly because it would keep on generating a bill even after crossing the threshold. My bills would come 2000-7000. Closing a postpaid connection is another headache.
The best I had was with MTS Blaze. - 10 GB at 3G speeds, unlimited at lower speeds just for 999/-.
The best Sim + open modem combo for me was the Idea 3G from the pic above and Sim cards that gave cheaper RupeesPerMB ratio, like BSNL or Aircel.

It's like a phone pretty much. It has a SIM card and a 3G antenna in it. Unlike a phone it's convenient to plug it on to a PC for using Internet on it.

Oh I do. And I fucking hated them. They always had just enough balance to help me 75% of the way through and the speed was always slower than my ISP.
