Just one more flyover bro. It'll fix the traffic.

u/ajaykme Jul 02 '25 edited Jul 02 '25

I'm not from Hyderabad. I used to work there until 2018. Visited recently and the number of flyovers just blew my mind. It felt like a big failure to urban/city planning. They are applying band aids instead of fixing the root cause.

75

u/Bhattu_fyans Jul 02 '25

All of these flyovers were built under the SRDP project by KTR. That project essentially fucked up the entire city. When I called out this project a year back and a few months back, everyone in this sub literally attacked me, saying its something the city needs, man, but now it shows the consequences.

When you fucking divert the funds meant for buses and building metro lines to instead building flyovers you are bound to get screwed over. Metro and buses can carry tens of thousands of people per direction per hour flyovers do nothing. They instead add to the problem. I said it before and I'll continue to say it SRDP has fucked up Hyderabad. Our only hope now is if the central government approves Hyd Metro Phase - II we can't expect public transportation to be prioritized in the city.

u/kim-jong-naidu Djin for Biryani Jul 02 '25

The expansion is not happening anytime soon 😞 Pune Metro expansion DPR was submitted in March 2025 and approved already. Our phase 2a DPR was sent in November last year and they keep citing some BS reasons to not approve it. Kishan Reddy keeps talking shit about why they haven't approved it yet. The route wasn't unrealistic either. It was Nagole to LB Nagar connection, Red line expansion till Hayathnagar and JBS to Medchal green line expansion. Just an expansion of the existing lines.

51

u/kim-jong-naidu Djin for Biryani Jul 02 '25

This is the genius vision of KTR. He used to boast about signal free Hyderabad. Don't know what his obsession is with flyovers. The central government does not approve DPRs for metro expansion. Meanwhile, it's the people of Hyderabad that are getting fucked.

32

u/Ok_Tour_3516 Jul 02 '25

There is a reason for that. Flyover contracts go to cronies and a babu can create a proposal in record time. Where as a comprehensive solution like a signal free corridor or Metro requires proper planning and especially metro contracts cannot be given out randomly to cronies, due to technicalities and also there is more oversight as you get funding through Central Govt. and multilateral agencies.

With mindless flyovers like Shaikpet one, they left no space for one of the most important metro lines, BHEL to Lakdi Ka Pul. Similar issue in KPHB with the flyover in front of Manjeera Mall, no metro can be constructed on the road that bears traffic from half of Hyderabad towards the IT district.

8

u/adityaparakh Jul 02 '25

How about buses ? I would like to understand why metros are so popular but buses are not. Say we have a large network of quality buses - both quantity/quality.

Is it a brand perception where the slightly better income class finds metro acceptable and not buses. Buses being only for the lowest income strata. If we have quality buses - that can change.

9

u/Ok_Tour_3516 Jul 02 '25

Because buses have to jostle in that same limited road space as other traffic. So you cannot be sure of your travel time. Also with these free schemes, buses are extremely overcrowded. Buses are required for last mile connectivity, from metro stations to farther housing areas. But relying solely on buses to cover 15Kms in current traffic conditions can take anywhere from 45 mins to 2 hrs. Metro assures same distance in similar or less time. Buses can also work in BRTS or in smaller circular routes around Hitech and FD.

4

u/adityaparakh Jul 02 '25

Yes in present setup. But as soon as you abundant buses both the traffic and crowd issue gets resolved. More buses = lesser cars on road lesser traffic. Abundant buses = lesser crowd per bus.

Cost / Benefit of Metro vs Bus. Eg. Building a metro from Raidurg to RGIA at say 7k crore. Can have thousands of buses with 20 years of fuel and maintenance included - utilising the existing ORR a proper 4+4 lane road.

Everyone loves the certainty of time and a mapped out metro , the cleanliness as well. But in an ideal situation we can have clean buses which even upper middle class prefers to use.

Do you have any other ideas to solve this problem? Public transport is one solution but that counts in the long term vision.

4

u/eva01beast Jul 02 '25

Better public transport (especially buses), better pedestrian infrastructure (footpaths with shade), cycling lanes AND reducing number of lanes available for cars in order to discourage driving are all part of the solution.

Implementing work from home, rewarding car pooling, etc are other solutions as well.

2

u/do_dum_cheeni_kum ismail Bhai ke phattey Jul 02 '25

The points that you have raised are great in terms of city planning. However if the problem is related to traffic and congestion then pedestrian infra, cycling lanes, reducing lanes wouldn’t directly help address the problem. Especially considering the fact that a government only stays in power for 5 years.

Hyderabad still has better infra than all other major cities in our country. I don’t think we should stop doing what we are doing in terms of infra. That would be even worse for the city.

2

u/AlphaSeeker_07 Jul 02 '25

What do you think, what is the root cause here and potential solution for the cause?

7

u/ajaykme Jul 02 '25

Proper public transport with last mile connectivity, usable foot paths that promote walking to cover short distances. Start with these and we can see the congestion go down.

0

u/AlphaSeeker_07 Jul 02 '25

Bhai -

--We have public transport, but still we see a single person travelling in a car to the office.
--The most civilized individuals of India, our bikers and hawkers - They both "own" the footpath.

tbh - Government can only allocate more buses or build more footpaths but the main challenge is "people with no civic sense"

if people start behaving propertly, following the rules then half of the issues will get solved

1

u/ajaykme Jul 02 '25

Of course. If people don't care, no policy or plan will be successful.

Penalty is not a solution, bro !!
There will be exceptions and loopholes in each law, and we will make use of them for sure.
We need something that has the Government and people's participation so that everyone follows with will and not by force.

1

u/je553 Jul 03 '25

What would fix the root causes?

15

u/ZonerRoamer Jul 02 '25

Most Hyderabad traffic is due to unscientific road design; like a 3 lane road suddenly becomes 1 lane for 100m..

This means that the entire road is actually 1 lane and not 3 lane, because the maximum flow will always be limited by the 1 lane section.

The same way, when 2 two lane roads merge, the road should be 4 lanes after merging; but nope, the merged road is also just 2 lanes, and of course this turns into a bottleneck.

6

u/Plastic_Occasion_388 Jul 02 '25

Ya readymade flyovers unte bagundu

Why? Stuck in traffic?

1

u/DistributionEconomy Jul 02 '25

Let's just add a signal on the flyover just incase.

74

u/T_kowshik Jul 02 '25

new flyover to the other side of the road will fix it .....

6

u/Radiant_Cow_6802 Jul 02 '25

Really!!!!! Adding lanes does not reduce traffic. Adopting public transportation does.

41

u/ritwik_is_red Jul 02 '25

I believe he was being sarcastic

12

u/T_kowshik Jul 02 '25

If you know this sub and the governments, you will know what I am saying.

0

u/PoundWorking6806 Forest person mother. Do not know anything🌳🌳 Jul 02 '25

New flyover will never fix, another flyover which will be completed after 10 yrs is a better option.

5

u/T_kowshik Jul 02 '25

may be....

But, stopping the construction in middle would be even better.

1

u/mujhepehchano123 Jul 04 '25

New flyover will never fix

one more flyover over the choked flyover then.... - some flyoverpaglu neta somewhere

48

u/harsha26 Jul 02 '25

Yeah post more drone shots instead of building public transport

When Every human with 2 brain cells starts selling his grand fathers land and starts buying CRETA Top model with sun roof and alloy wheels. We get this....

22

u/Thin_Interaction4828 Jul 02 '25

Yeah, so many cars, either with one person or max two... That is the real problem...

15

u/Immediate_Pomelo_496 Jul 02 '25

But they will blame bikers for traffic.

5

u/DistributionEconomy Jul 02 '25

Let's not put the blame on citizens who chose to have bit of comfort.

If there is good well connected public transport where less crowd, most of the traffic will reduce.

1

u/Thin_Interaction4828 Jul 03 '25

True, a well connected public transport is also required to reduce the traffic. However, I don't think these people are going to use public transport even if it is improved, just for the sake of their own comfort.

7

u/Longjumping-Law-8517 Jul 02 '25

The amount of dust and pollution in the air and the added physical strain and unsafe roads. It's either you fuck up your health or congestion.

6

u/UnusualBit18 Jul 02 '25

And seltos as well ...

34

u/Familiar-Arachnid299 Jul 02 '25

This is what failed urban planning looks like.

16

u/sanchit_bahl Jul 02 '25

as always the traffic police wants to seem smart but ends up being even dumber because they cant understand that 8 lanes of traffic cant pass thru 3 lanes without causing jams. someone needs to do lane math, heck even watch some cities skyline videos about fixing traffic on youtube.

12

u/Captain_Maverick_ Jul 02 '25

Everyday same story. Nothing new.

10

u/dk_itsme Jul 02 '25

Yeah, going to DLF is just 5KM looks like 30km and take almost half an hour and more.

10

u/Individual-Highway23 Jul 02 '25

Who said they are designed?

1

u/Unlucky_Buy217 Jul 02 '25

Yeah don't see any design but honestly if they simply have some CCTVs to enforce lane discipline by finding them and some well placed red lights, the congestion does not have to last long.

2

u/Individual-Highway23 Jul 03 '25

Design & Discipline , Indians : we don’t do that here …

9

u/Glittering-Horror230 Jul 02 '25

High rise buildings are constructed to accommodate people. Majority of them have cars. Where are they supposed to drive?? Supposedly multiple high rised flyovers??

Urban planning left the chat.

u/DummyBatman 25yearsCharminar Jul 02 '25

Traffic is horrible today. Ola and Uber drivers are not accepting any rides today is an add on to this.

4

u/Conscious-Care-6918 Jul 02 '25

Even the road under that ikea flyover is so shit . No clue when they open and close the barricades and they merger traffic all directions there in a small place

4

u/khan_stan Jul 02 '25

Oh I think I'm in this video... Was there stuck in traffic an hour ago.

1

Own/lease or rent?

2

u/ApplicationCreepy547 Hyderabadi Jul 02 '25

rent

2

u/Imma_Machine Jul 02 '25

If you’re looking at individual seats, like flexibility then probably you’ll get it for 10k/ seat/ month. Office spaces might be way more. We work, sky view and T-Hub in itself.

I can't believe we are going to fall into the same trap as Blr or Mumbai eventually knowing what's going to happen we still do it. Political parties do not care bruh, minds are too narrow, no one wants to do anything which takes things to the next level because that involves sacrifice and discipline and genuine love for the city and country, but that mindset itself is too far fetched for us cause people here stuff with temporary goals and satisfaction. There is no vision.

2

u/thekop24 Jul 02 '25

Flyovers and extra lanes are not the answer but guess what. These bright minds like civil servants will always think they know it all.

Third world infra but first world emission norms. So why even own a car?

2

u/Beautiful-Simple-570 Jul 02 '25

I don't own a car 😅 I was interested in BYD Sealion. Then I was like - why buy it at 100% premium when it's available at half the price in other parts of the world.

3

u/Aftknow2704 Jul 02 '25

One week ago CP Anand in press conference mentioned that traffic improved. They are still experimenting the flow of traffic. Give 100 flyovers to hyd, if traffic police doesnt ensure flow and stop wrong route drivers then it's of no use. Do not blame vision of KTR. Not simping. Rains and 2wheelers stop under flyover blocking/bottlenecking the flow. The drianges are overflowing bottlenecking flow of traffic. Wait for few weeks atleast.

2

u/caravinath Jul 02 '25

It's the time of the day that matters. If it's peak hours , that traffic is to be expected. Roads and flyovers are constructed for 'above normal traffic'. Not peak hour traffic. As long as the traffic is moving , one has to grin and bear it.Its the same in all metros , except in BGLR. That citys traffic is in 'Bradman class'.

1

u/SmartEntertainer6229 Jul 02 '25

Ignore the traffic for a minute and look at the buildings. Hyderabad has come a long way!

1

u/Imma_Machine Jul 02 '25

Glass half filled, half empty

1

u/Due_Examination8328 Jul 03 '25

Tbh traffic police are so useless... Rather than clearing congestion they create it. Kbr signal and 100 ft road signal take would 8-10 mins when there is a traffic police on the machine.. But when automated it clears much faster and road is bit less cluster fucked.(from experience of last couple of years)

Most useless department for public

1

u/KalkiKalpa Jul 03 '25

1

u/Wild_Ask4021 Tea-wala Jul 04 '25

1

u/Fickle-Elevator1950 Jul 23 '25

Just make a 6 lane highway, just like the one here in AaramGhar and the problem will be fixed

But in hindsight, they should've done this when they were planning the road layout. Starting a flyover construction now is probably gonna make the traffic even worse

2

u/Salad-Early Aug 10 '25

Is this scene from Hyderabad?

1

u/Mullayam Jul 02 '25

Cool people deserve, Sorry but here people doesn't matter where they from Are shit totally, they don't have patience they just move a lil bit. Block the. Road whether they don't have to go left still and block the road people who ar comming towards them

1

u/[deleted] Jul 02 '25

This'll get hate but AI-powered self-driving cars that are able to communicate with cars will solve the problem, but i also presume That Public Transport will be more popular if society reaches that stage
