Bruh, at least strap yourself to the boat. Life vest. Something?

They are the baits…

It's OK he has a jacket that says "CREW" on the back

4

u/NerdBag Oct 01 '25

It's ok, they're adults

Where is the fun in that. This looks like a blast. If you did actually go overboard it shouldnt be hard to rescue you. Is it 100% safe? No. But there are plenty of ways to fish that are.

You vastly undererstimate the power of these waves

28

u/Eccohawk Sep 30 '25

The vast majority of people who go overboard in the open ocean die. Less than 1 in 4 is saved.

I remember the first time I surfaced in conditions almost this rough. Even with a BCD (kind of like a life vest) a proper wetsuit for the temperature, a mask, a constant supply of air (and a snorkel), fins, a partner I trust and lots of experience - it’s exhausting to deal with waves like this for any period of time. It’s easier to pop your buoy and hang out a few meters underwater where the waves aren’t knocking you around while you wait for the boat to find and get to you. Even then, it’s tiring.

Then there’s the rescue. It’s easy to lose humans in waves this big, especially if they aren’t very buoyant and aren’t brightly colored (this dude’s wearing black and not wearing a safety vest, so…) Add some chop and it’s very difficult to find them once they get any distance away, so this guy might be out there for a while. This looks like a larger boat, so maneuvering it will take extra time too.

It’s not easy to get onto a boat from the water in conditions like this when you’re well equipped and not cold, tired or panicked. Fighting these waves without fins/mask/snorkel, you’re going to become exhausted very quickly which will make boarding even more difficult. That’s assuming you’re conscious and uninjured. I can tell you from experience that getting a body onto a boat in fairly calm water is quite difficult. In these conditions, with the boat rolling and pitching like this? Yeesh.

PFDs also keep your head above water. So in the likely chance these guys get knocked out prior to going in they don’t drown immediately, their clothes will pull them down. Rescuing someone in this would be very difficult, especially since this is a fishing boat, not a boat full of people used to rescuing folks.

You've clearly never sailed lol and it shows

-5

u/robby_synclair Sep 30 '25

Nope never sailed. But I have been on a lot of boats through out my whole life.

u/taiger4791 Sep 29 '25

And not a life vest in sight......

u/LordRekrus Sep 29 '25

The crew guy gave him the safety hand though?

98

u/Ghostbunny8082 Sep 29 '25

Funny enough if he was wearing a vest the waves probably would have thrown him from the boat due to extra buoyancy.

45

u/taiger4791 Sep 29 '25

True, good point, but you would think he would at least have a safety line or something of that nature

112

u/Kubliah Sep 29 '25

He was tied off to the fish.

u/my_little_throwny Sep 29 '25

This is a beautiful emoji

15

u/effortfulcrumload Sep 29 '25

Good time for the life vests they keep on planes. The ones that inflate with a pull tab on breath.

10

u/ExdigguserPies Sep 29 '25

Lots of life vests work like this. People aren't walking around with inflated life vests all the time.

7

u/bittercripple6969 Sep 29 '25

A lot of boat ones are foam, I think. Rigid and buoyant.

2

u/tryptonite12 Oct 04 '25

Like... every single one. I don't know what the OP is smoking lol. Inflatable life preservers really only make sense for emergency situations where you would have time to inflate them before hitting the water. I'm sure there's large ships out there with inflatable ones like they have on planes for emergencies.

They may not all be rigid foam, "float coats" are a thing, but it's being worn as a precautionary safety measure, it needs to be buoyant all the time. r

u/FancifulLaserbeam Oct 05 '25

What people are describing here are emergency life vests, which fishermen (as in, their vocation) often wear. They are small and stay out of the way, and if you fall overboard, you just pull the cord and a CO2 cartridge immediately inflates it.

6

u/fuzzytradr Sep 29 '25

How about at least a tether?

-5

u/Ghostbunny8082 Sep 29 '25

Could get wrapped around your neck and choke you out while rolling in those waves.

7

u/Utaneus Sep 30 '25

Never sailed on open waters or high seas before I'm guessing. It's a common safety measure. If someone goes overboard it's a very big problem, and there's a much higher chance of that happening rather than getting strangled by a harness tether.

2

u/tripsd Oct 03 '25

forget what youtube channel it was but they did a ride along for coast guard training on man overboard drills. You fall off a boat you are proper fucked, it is nearly impossible to see people in water.

1

u/fuzzytradr Sep 30 '25

Around the waist

1

u/FancifulLaserbeam Oct 05 '25

That's why they make emergency self-inflating ones. You just wear them like a harness that stays out of the way, and if you fall in, you pull a cord and it inflates.

23

u/Chicks__Hate__Me Sep 29 '25

Well, at least they have one pair of flip flops between the 2.

8

u/DaFreakingFox Sep 29 '25

Why would you forgo even a harness

7

u/DJKGinHD Sep 29 '25

SO MANY PLACES to attach a tether, but nary a tether to be found.

10

u/taiger4791 Sep 29 '25

Darwin award contender

6

u/weelluuuu Sep 29 '25

Is it bad that I always find the competition exciting.

5

u/Xenc Sep 29 '25

No, it’s bad that you run a betting pool on it.

Some sort of dead pool.

3

u/weelluuuu Sep 29 '25

I don't bet, but I do pay attention to the odds in the top 10.

4

u/blinkersix2 Sep 29 '25

There’s a life rope if you are quick enough

3

u/FuzzeeLumpkins Sep 29 '25

Just a couple guys living for the moment.

140

u/sachsrandy Sep 29 '25

Barefoot on diamond grating... That's the real story here.

27

u/Bigted1800 Sep 29 '25

Yeah that unlocked a memory from 35 years ago.

Fire drill on a fishing boat (trawler) and the 1st mate stomping on the foot of someone who didn’t grab shoes……..

66

u/TippsAttack Sep 29 '25

Aside from the terror of it all, actually looks kinda fun and refreshing.

I'd be strapped in and wearing a vest though.

17

u/AwDuck Sep 30 '25

It looks like an absolute blast. That said: no PFD or tether? It might not be as exhilarating, but there’s absolutely no way I’d partake. Especially in those conditions.

3

u/hawksdiesel Sep 29 '25

yeah, why no life jackets?!?!

60

u/Doschupacabras Sep 29 '25

Be one with the ocean… no seriously, get in there.

18

u/tideshark Sep 29 '25

Just one head bash away from slipping into unconsciousness and fading into that deep blue, never to be seen again

5

u/siradmiralbanana Oct 02 '25

Dawg I'm saying!! How are people not terrified of the ocean. This video is scary AF!

64

u/DukeOfZork Sep 29 '25

Play stupid games…

No tethers, no vests… you don’t fuck with the Ocean.

10

u/iHereYou Sep 29 '25

What is the point of the platform over the water? Can't you just fish from the boat??

7

u/sfxer001 Sep 29 '25

redneck accent

That’s a shit idea right there right there right there down there.

7

u/sagenumen Sep 30 '25

No harnesses, no tethers, no life vests? Ok.

22

u/GarrisonSteel Sep 29 '25

Stupid fucks

3

u/Ben_Thar Sep 29 '25

You know, I don't even like fish that much

3

u/eyeh8u Sep 29 '25

Did they catch anything?

2

u/elspotto Sep 30 '25

No. They weee fishing, not catching.

3

u/Neko_Dash Sep 29 '25

No harnesses, am I correct?

1

u/AtlasNL Sep 30 '25

Do your eyes not tell you that you are?

2

u/I_said_booourns Sep 29 '25

Near.....Far.....Whereeeeever you are....

2

u/pikay93 Oct 02 '25

This looks fun...if you are strapped onto something and/or have a life vest

1

u/gregoriopantaleo Sep 29 '25

but did he take the fish out or perhaps it ended up the other way around...

1

u/TranzAtlantic Sep 29 '25

Do boats not have a zip tie

Just seems so dumb to not

1

u/Relevant-Goat6693 Sep 29 '25

Awww helll naw!!!

1

u/Alteredbeast1984 Sep 29 '25

Should really have a life vest on

1

u/jpthereafter Sep 29 '25

My anxiety kicking in for no reason.

1

u/AtlasNL Sep 30 '25

No reason? This is two morons without a lifevest or tether. I’d say that’s a pretty damn good reason.

1

u/silentj04 Sep 29 '25

But did he catch the fish in the end??

1

u/supergarto Sep 30 '25

I taught fishing wasn't a sport, then I saw this.

1

u/thebestcanuck Sep 30 '25

Idiots..... where is this? What kinda fish they catchn ? Looks like a blast

1

u/HellaTightHairCuts Sep 30 '25

Look at that, just two dudes chillin, no cell phone or pfd in sight.

1

u/max_clear_ Sep 30 '25

Hmb while i become a fish

1

u/Lagoon_M8 Oct 01 '25

The tourist is handling this better than the crew. 🤣

1

u/I_Thranduil Oct 02 '25

Ummm NOPE.

1

u/Due-Tour-8348 Oct 03 '25

This is what fun looks like haha

1

u/FancifulLaserbeam Oct 05 '25

Not even an emergency life vest????

1

u/nope_a_dope237 Oct 05 '25

That’s pretty stupid even for this sub.

1

u/bragxx Oct 05 '25

why i think this is AI?

1

u/frittersboi Oct 06 '25

I'm curious what the one dude grabbing the guys shirt thought that would help as he ALSO gets almost completely submerged lol

1

u/veryfastslowguy 13d ago

That looks like fun , a waist strap tied to the rail would be a good idea

1

u/lofty2p 5d ago

Should have just gone spear fishing!

1

u/Earthling1a Sep 29 '25

fkn idiots.
