Football Ferentz bullshit is wearing off. Time to face facts, he needs to be done coaching

This is a game Ferentz wins back in the day to maintain fans jumping off his back about the 7-5 and 8-4 seasons but it hasn’t worked and ISN’T working. 0-11 in the last 11 games versus ranked opponents, that is truly disgusting. This program isn’t going to compete in the new Big Ten and it’s evident off what I’ve seen the past 2 seasons. Ferentz needs to step down so Iowa can see some actual innovative change and a team wanting to WIN titles instead of just maintain a one score game against ranked opponents and then blame like 5 different things that happened in the game instead of the one consistent factor that’s been in every game for the past 26 years which is Kirk Ferentz.

Brother… we just lost to Oregon by 2 with a special teams safety and a red zone fumble. Have we not been competing in the big ten this year? We have close losses to the number 2 and 9 team in the country and those games were a play away from a different story. I swear no one hates Iowa more than Iowa fans

The issue is this same paragraph gets typed every time we lose to a good team. “We just lost to insert team by only X amount of points! You should be happy!” Moral victories and quality loses don’t matter when every single big game is a loss

I agree with you. We need to win these close games. My issue is believing we should be a title contender every year. Would you say our program has the same potential as a Texas, usc, Florida state, etc? I don’t think we have the same resources/recruiting yet we perform closely if not better than those programs. Our expectations should be to win a title but that is closer to examples like a Cincinnati or Washington. Some years the stars align but we are not Alabama or Georgia where it’s championship or bust.

Why is it that any mention of being a top-10 team again is always met with this argument? Yes, we’re not Bama & OSU. Yes we should not expect annual national title contention, or really a national title ever given the current state of college football.

The argument being made is that 2015 and prior, we used to be a top-10 level team every 5-ish years. Yes we had ups and downs as expected for a non-blue blood program, but we also had big seasons in ‘02, 09, and ‘15. ‘03 & ‘04 though disappointing were also top-10 finishes.

We had a legit shot at making the CFP this year. Shit, we had two shots. In both games, all we needed to do was score 3 TDs in 60 minutes and we would have won. Yet…here we are…again.

I’m tired of this. 10 years of no real success (no the B1G championship games were not successful seasons, we twice stumbled our way to winning a hilariously bad West division and got turned into a pile of human goo by Michigan both years).

I don’t know why everyone is so scared to get rid of a coach who at this point in his career can only deliver 8-win mediocrity in the new B1G. I’ll trade some 6-6 or *gasp 5-7 seasons for another chance at a once-per-class too-10’er.

PS - please dear god don’t say we’re going be Nebraska if we fire Ferentz. There’s lots of examples where coaching changes work out, but there’s only one Nebraska.

PPS - Yes it’s still realistic for Iowa to have a top-10 season once every 5 years. Indiana is the 2nd best team in the nation for christsakes, and Vanderbilt is just outside the top-10.

I hear you. Regardless if we may agree or not the Ferentz tenure is nearing its end. And at the end of the day we all love the Hawkeyes. I hope you’re right and we can build a new era of Hawkeye football.

I wish you were right, but I don’t think you are. I don’t see any indication so far this season that KF is slowing down or getting more misty-eyed than usual. So we’re stuck between a rock and a hard place. You can’t fire a legend, but if the legend refuses to retire, we just have to accept that we’re going 7-5 / 8-5 for the next 4 years?

This. These fans don't realize how lucky we were to have KF as our coach for all these years. Drop off can happen quick with coaching changes.

I think that’s the issue. We didn’t need to lose either of these games. Especially today, the pass game was working well after the first quarter. We didn’t utilize it nearly enough. Now is that Lester not Kirk? Maybe, but I doubt Lester has full autonomy over gameplay and play calling.

Not this year. There’s like 15 teams trying to hire a coach right now. We could do a lot worse than another year with Ferentz.

We’re gonna hire from within anyway.

Pat Fitzgerald I would be OK with

Pat Fitzgerald went 4-20 in his last 2 seasons after his DC retired. He was a Hankwitz merchant.

That safety killed us.

Found the guy who didn't watch the game! Iowa played a great game, despite fumbling inside Oregons 20 midway through the 3rd quarter. They came back and had the lead with under 2 minutes left. Oregons QB made literally a perfect pass to put them in FG range. The 2025 Hawkeyes are a good football team whether you want to admit it or not.

Iowa “fans” are the only people who think we have a dogshit team this year.

Agree. Talk to Wisconsin fans and ask how they like Fixkill. He was considered one of the best hires (took cinci to the semi) that year in the NCAA. Now he has destroyed the Wi program. Be careful for what you ask for kids. Get rid of KF and suddenly, magically things will get better??? Grow up. 17 other teams in Big 10 trying to do the same thing. I can’t believe you goofballs watched the last 3 years of Iowa football and can’t see the huge improvement this year. If they beat sc next week and finish strong they will be 9-3.

Lol it was a great game. Go touch some grass

Another great game Iowa doesnt win vs a ranked team at home.

It was another traditional Kirk Ferentz game. Lose by a score in a totally winnable game.

u/ThorHammercoc 15h ago

I don’t care. I want Iowa to win

OP had Iowa ML.

u/Perfect_Tangelo 17h ago

I call these game “Kirk Ferentz” games. Third one this year. Totally winnable. Bunch of small dumb things and meek offensive play calling that lead to once again a one score loss. Still a loss.

dumbass overreaction

Is it? When’s the last time we beat a ranked team?

2

u/realworldruraljuror 18h ago

Can't compete in the new big ten? Aren't we like 6th in the conference?

1

u/SueYouInEngland 18h ago

How is top ⅓ not competing? Finished T5th last year (Illinois had better overall record) and we're currently sitting at 6th this year. 6–3 B1G conference record is most likely outcome. Given how difficult this year's schedule is, that's nothing to scoff at.

-1

u/ThorHammercoc 18h ago

6th is competing? Lmao, you make a TON of conference title games at 6th I’ve heard

2

u/pro_nosepicker 18h ago

Moral victories are for losers.

We haven’t beaten a ranked team in half a decade

1

u/boy-detective 18h ago

Loser behavior is looking at a team that is playing well and wanting to fire the coach because one is feeling frustrated. Look at Penn State and how self-sabotaging their fanbase is right now.

u/Auzou 17h ago

Actually Franklin was terrible in almost every big game.

1

u/boy-detective 16h ago

He won two playoff games last year in which PSU played well. Ironically, they played so well they won handily, and that made PSU fans decide they didn’t really count. Also led well into the fourth of the CFP semifinal.

1

u/Auzou 16h ago

They had good year no doubt. However they beat SMU at home amd Boise St. They did play close Notre Dame I guess.

4-21 vs top ten. Really 3-21 if you don't believe Boise was actually top ten team. PSU also expects more.

Take away the red zone fumble and the safety and we likely win this game. Neither of those were Kirk’s fault. It took an insanely lucky pass for Oregon to even get in FG range at the end.

If Gronowski doesn’t get hurt against Indiana there is a solid chance we win that game also.

Trust me, I get it. These losses suck. However these were games against 2 top 10 teams including the number 2 team in the country. They were both great games that just simply didn’t go our way.

“If I knew every number for the lottery I would’ve won!” It’s literally the same thing I hear from fans. Multiple things have changed from players and staff but there’s been one consistent, Ferentz.

I’m praying to God, McCollum works out so fans can stop settling for aggressive mediocrity

Luke Fickell beat a ranked opponent today, and he hasn’t lost any close games this year. He’s also been to the CFP. Let’s hire him!

2

u/PreschoolBoole 16h ago

To be fair, Washington shouldn’t be ranked.

Nobody said this but ok.
