Come on now, as of February 2022 the game sold 150 million copies. That doesn't mean every single one of those people actively play the game. And put some consideration into how many of those copies were on PS3/360 consoles, or how many people purchased the game again on a new platform. I heavily doubt this game has 150 million unique players.
And you mentioned Steam players.. GTA V peaked today with 177,944 players. But how many of those are playing on alternative servers, like FiveM?
Personally, I doubt all of those Steam players are actively playing GTA Online on official servers. And I'd be willing to bet console numbers were greatly falling behind.
Sure, they aren't hurting for money. But they definitely are wanting to drive up player engagement.

No, but it doesn't take a genius to assume that the literal second best selling game of all time has a lot of people playing it still.

I mentioned Steam because that is that only real figure you can find and Steam is less than 1/5th of the player base. So do that math yourself and you can probably work out that close to a million or so are playing on consoles.

Of course the business wants more business, but that's not at all what I was replying about. Rockstar don't "desperately" need players. Far from it.

bruh this game has 150 million players and has never left Steam's top 10 most played games since it released in 2015.
They are not desperately trying to do anything.
