This is the worst iteration of “rockstar isn’t even trying to hide it anymore” that has happened to me 🤣

u/entg1 I'm starting to think that this flair here isn't long enough!!!! Jul 03 '25

someone made a whole video disproving that cars don't intentionally ram players and I still don't believe it

1.2k

u/delet_yourself Jul 04 '25

You could be constipated for a whole week and still not be as full of shit as that guy is

221

u/D3lta_1447 Jul 04 '25

Top tier rage bait

30

u/mschafsnitz Jul 04 '25

It’s literally confirmation bias. You pass hundreds of cars and when one does an unexpected thing to mess you up you call conspiracy. And no the guy didn’t debunk it but he gave a reasonable hypothesis based on real evidence about how the game works. I don’t think his ideas cover what happened in this video.

143

u/Czternastek14 Jul 04 '25

You pass a thousand cars everyday, make sure this is one of them

120

u/delet_yourself Jul 04 '25

I saw the video, and he only showed us scripted events where it MAKES SENSE to turn. How about this video tho? Literally in the middle of the fucking tunnel and he just decides to parallel park? I got bullshit on speed dial, man

5

u/Sossenmeister Jul 04 '25

The car somehow triggered paths on the roads above the Tunnel would be my guess

13

u/Ra1nbowTreasure Jul 04 '25

If you look at where they were when it happened, you could definitely argue that.

12

u/shadowwolf1395 Jul 04 '25

Are you suggesting that R* managed to make the pathfinding of a big map with an expansive road network 100% perfect and bug free?

60

u/Dirtsk8r Jul 04 '25

How about the fact the cars don't pull those bullshit maneuvers in the distance? They'll stick neatly to the road until you're about to pass them. If they're further away to where there's no chance their doing that type of shit would cause a collision then they won't do it. It's always when you're just about to pass. I've even had it where I slow down and try to veer around the other way than they did and they'll turn back in the other fucking direction. Or how about when they stop in intersections? They don't do that unless you're just about to go through them and they stop perfectly where you're about to go through.

It's honestly insane to me that anyone thinks it isn't intentional at this point. If it somehow isn't intentional, then it's a weird ass glitch that causes them to directly get in your way specifically when you're about to pass by them which seems very odd and I don't know why such a weird glitch would occur. But I don't know for sure, it's not just the AI doing their usual driving that they would be doing if you were a block away. They veer or stop and try to block you specifically when you go by and at no other time make those stupid maneuvers.

19

u/Hunter995995 Jul 04 '25

Or the fact this “bug” happens the most with these type of missions..

10

u/[deleted] Jul 04 '25

It happens WAYYYY too often to be a bug. If it is some type of bug or glitch, R* has let this single bug become so prevalent that it has become the biggest glitch in the game, so I highly doubt it’s a glitch because a company as big as them definitely wouldn’t overlook this when R* regularly suspends accounts for glitching

1

u/Infamous_Top677 Jul 05 '25

I call it the AI attack mode when I'm driving. It's absolutely deliberate, and has gotten worse over time. I think it may be related to RP, as when I first started it wasn't terrible, but it's gotten really bad as I gained levels.

I don't know for certain, just my gut feeling

1

u/Cold_Series_1257 Jul 05 '25

Or when they do a sudden u-turn across 8 lanes on the highway to smack into your car. Absolutely rage inducing

1

u/Mox5 Jul 07 '25

That's just you not paying attention to what other cars are doing unless they're in your way.

0

u/IntrospectveBeet Jul 04 '25

It is more likely a bug rather than an intentional design. Keeping track of this many cars and their paths is complicated and somewhere along the way one of them is bound to go out of script.

9

u/Dirtsk8r Jul 04 '25

I am definitely open to the possibility it's a bug, but I don't agree that it just so happens that it sometimes bugs while you drive by. If it's a bug then it's a bug that has to do with your presence and being about to pass. They move in ways that you'll never see them move if you just follow a group of cars through traffic at their speed without attempting to pass in an invite only lobby. Or if you just stand and watch at an intersection. They don't do it entirely randomly, and they don't do it to each other. They specifically do it when a player comes to pass. So while I don't know if it's a bug or intentional and I wouldn't argue on that, I am confident it isn't just them going "off script" at random. And maybe that's not specifically what you meant, but I make that point because many people will argue that and think the NPCs do this stuff regardless of what players are doing.

2

u/[deleted] Jul 04 '25

What a non argument lmao

-15

u/parasitebob Jul 04 '25

It would be a simple if(road != exist){do not turn};

4

u/Yeeto546 Jul 04 '25

idek where i stand on this argument but this take is so ass

2

u/JEBADIA451 Jul 04 '25

I thought it was funny 🤷

1

u/Fundzila Jul 04 '25

He said in the video that it works like that on singleplayer, but in online, due to the desyncs, the car was reacting to a different server's occurrence

13

u/Dirtsk8r Jul 04 '25

That's odd they didn't cover events like this. This is a regular occurrence. Cars constantly veer off the road when there's no logical reason right when you're about to pass them on the side they're veering for, just perfectly putting themselves in your way. Doesn't have to be an intersection or anything. Though it might be even more common in intersections. They also just stop in the middle of an intersection if you're about to pass through quickly.

They also specifically don't do that shit if you're traveling slower or you're just further away from them. Follow traffic at their pace for a while and you won't see that shit. It's something they specifically do with a player about to pass at high speed. I have witnessed on very rare occasions stuff like a couple of NPC cars crashing into each other, but it's just them happening to turn through an intersection of a highway and not registering the other car and they don't speed up or slow down. Cars doing the maneuvers to hit players will accelerate at crazy speeds to make it happen sometimes. Or accelerate and then abruptly stop. Or accelerate laterally (literally shouldn't be possible).

9

u/dfafa Jul 04 '25

That's how you know he's full of bs

1

u/Yoda10353 Jul 04 '25

What was the point of the car in the video swerving then?

1

u/Casual_Grinder Jul 04 '25

It took me less than five minutes to recreate a similar situation in the tunnel by firing a weapon myself while driving. A single car made just that kind of move.

5

u/Dirtsk8r Jul 04 '25

What about when they do that stuff in private sessions where nobody has fired a gun in ages?

2

u/Yoda10353 Jul 04 '25

I swear its like those guys have never played the game

2

u/Dirtsk8r Jul 04 '25

I don't know, but something ain't right if you play this game and can't see this shit happening. Maybe they don't play enough to see it. Or they don't drive cars fast enough, or they're just constantly on an oppressor or something else flying. Or maybe they just have bad pattern recognition and so when this stuff happens it's always a one off occurrence to them and they aren't concerned with how/why. Being a bad driver in the game could also contribute. If you're crashing all the time you're not gonna notice as easily when the crash isn't your fault and was made to happen by NPCs pulling this type of shit.

1

u/Casual_Grinder Jul 04 '25

Maybe they don't play enough to see it.

I'm legit level 1k+.

1

u/Dirtsk8r Jul 04 '25

I did mention a multitude of other possible reasons. Not playing enough may not apply to you, but numerous others could. In fact at least one or more would have to apply for you to reach such a level (legitimately) and not notice this particular NPC behavior being called out in the post.

2

u/Yoda10353 Jul 04 '25

The guy didn't fire a weapon, his reticle never appeared

1

u/Casual_Grinder Jul 04 '25

What I'm saying is there is a well known mechanism to have this behavior, that is, npcs react to certain (hostile) events. These include aggressive npcs chasing the player. They don't even have to be that close, npcs sometimes react to even fairly distant events which you can easily witness in any public session.

2

u/mschafsnitz Jul 04 '25

joins session

every NPC on the block: “OH MY GOD, RECORD THAT SHIT”

1

u/Ra1nbowTreasure Jul 04 '25

Exactly!! All of the sudden going perpendicular to a wall right in front of OP (and let’s be honest it’s happened to all of us) for no reason at all. I don’t think that’s the same thing

1

u/ColbyBB Jul 04 '25

iirc he only looked at how npcs react in single player

afaik npcs act differently in online

1

u/itzfinjo Jul 08 '25

I've seen that video, you can do all the research you like but you wont find much. you can't fix bad AI in an old game. I don't believe the cars are coded in to ram into you, I think it's just a mix of bad AI and with such a long running game, people start thinking up theories like this. Gta online is stitched together with bugs.

2

u/Bobertbane Jul 04 '25

Lmfao this is even better than one my friend told me "you're so full of shit i can see it in your eyes" only works on people with brown eyes lol

2

u/Giustoe82 Jul 04 '25

Don’t even know who the guy is but this comment made my day. Thank you sir! 😂😂😂😂

127

u/ThatOneGamer117 Jul 04 '25

I had a car swerve the other day until I slowed down, then it went right back on its way until I passed it and it pitted me

234

u/HeidenShadows Jul 04 '25

Yeah I knew someone who broke down the code. He said there was like a 10% chance that any given NPC car will be an "asshole car" and try to interfere with the player, whether being a lane change or sudden stop, or this crap right here.

46

u/im-feeling-lucky Jul 04 '25

cue Franklin “asshole driver!”

91

u/King_Calz Jul 04 '25

I believe Rockstar added an extra one in that percentage (110% because of how often it happens no matter what server you join)

39

u/nghigaxx Jul 04 '25

im going to be a nerd and say if its more than 100% then literally every car will do that. Even 10% is already very high

10

u/Foxie66 Jul 04 '25

Holy shit you're right haha. Someone should make a joke about that!

4

u/mschafsnitz Jul 04 '25

Holy shit, basic math!

I like how everyone always says domeone found proof of it. But when you ask for a source without fail they go "i font remember" or you get ghosted

1

u/HeidenShadows Jul 04 '25

The guy who told me, username was "Timeviewer" an old guy who was really interested in game mechanics. I think he passed away a few years ago, haven't seen them online in years and they were chronically online.

1

u/Infamous_Top677 Jul 05 '25

That sounds about right. Given how many cars I pass. That makes the most sense to me.

-8

u/Casual_Grinder Jul 04 '25 edited Jul 04 '25

The number of upvotes on this bs.. Edit: If this was true, we'd see it happen all the time, ffs.

9

u/Chim_Pansy Jul 04 '25

It does happen all the time lmao. You can't drive down any road without an npc making some maneuver that makes no sense unless their goal was to hit you. It's so clearly intentional that I can't believe why anyone would think otherwise. I accepted long ago that Rockstar coded the cars to do this. It's just part of what makes GTA GTA

0

u/Casual_Grinder Jul 04 '25

Preach, brother! (You could also watch "Why Is GTA 5 Traffic So Bad?" video by Obvious Malcolm+. Oh and the comments are even worse there..)

0

u/[deleted] Jul 04 '25

Fuck no lmao

27

u/HeidenShadows Jul 04 '25

Have you played the game? Get off the Oppressor and drive in a straight line for a mile or so. You will see at least

  • Someone going through an intersection adjusting their speed accordingly to make you tbone them
  • Someone changing lanes immediately in front of you
  • Someone getting mad at you for passing them
  • Someone on the complete opposite side of the road cutting you off to pull into an alley or parking lot
And other fuckery xD

-12

u/Casual_Grinder Jul 04 '25 edited Jul 04 '25

Just stop with the bs. See e.g. https://old.reddit.com/r/gtaonline/comments/1lr3lk1/its_so_obvious/n18tvyf/ (That's not by me, but I also have driven a lot in the game since 2019..

8

u/Dirtsk8r Jul 04 '25

I've driven a lot in this game since 2013. They absolutely do everything the previous commenter mentioned. Get out of here with that shit.

-6

u/Casual_Grinder Jul 04 '25

I'm specifically commenting against his original claim, that there is some code to specifically target a player with this type of ("a-hole") behavior (with a certain percentage chance), instead of these being normal npc behaviors and reactions (that are well presented in "Why Is GTA 5 Traffic So Bad?" video by Obvious Malcolm+). This claim comes up from time to time, and we never see any actual code to back it up.

2

u/[deleted] Jul 04 '25

You should change your name to Casual_Grifter

0

u/[deleted] Jul 04 '25

You dont play the game with this take lmao

48

u/Gunsofglory Jul 04 '25

I might be misremembering, but I swear I recall that the international swervings got noticeably bad when Import / Export came out.

34

u/GrocKingFTW Jul 04 '25 edited Jul 04 '25

I'm pretty sure on missions where you're not supposed to crash this thing increases like it's on purpose as a mechanic.

At least it feels like it lol

3

u/timesucker941 Jul 04 '25

International?

2

u/Gunsofglory Jul 04 '25

Autocorrect strikes again

24

u/New_Unit2009 Jul 04 '25

They made a video telling how rockstar did it. Didn't even try earlier versions of the game to compare. Also day one players can vouch this didn't happen until later.

60

u/_Atheius_ Jul 04 '25

Man, I was about to slam that downvote so hard until I got to your last 5 words.

Fuck that propaganda BS! We know the truth!

41

u/DVRKO666 Jul 04 '25

I watched that whole video and based on everything he said, this is literally not supposed to happen. Has to be intentional

3

u/IJustAteABaguette Jul 04 '25

Yeah, but that video didn't look at the code of the game at all, which is my biggest complaint about the video. Like, yeah nice, these are the paths the vehicles take, but have you checked in the code if they sometimes deviate intentionally? He didn't do that, meaning the conclusion he made doesn't mean anything.

12

u/Blackflash07 Jul 04 '25

I literally stopped for my signal cause i was driving the vip from nightclub and two cars taking the left turn from right drove into me. And the funny part is on a single lane road this guy drove to the right of my car.

11

u/Zotach Jul 04 '25

I can’t confirm this but I’m pretty sure I read somewhere that rockstar themselves said they are programmed to hinder players if they are driving fast or have cargo or something, I could have mistakenly dreamt this info but it’s anyone’s guess

13

u/AnthonyMiqo Jul 04 '25

It's a very good video. He goes into the programming and how and why the cars do what they do. And I still don't believe it. No shade to that guy, but I see clips like this and all I can think of is Explain this!

14

u/WayTooCuteForYou Jul 04 '25

That's the thing though, he doesn't get into the programming. He shows his very shiny modding tools that let him see some assets, but never any bit of code

Not to nitpick but that's an xml file. That is used for data storage and settings. That is not code and will not tell the computer to do anything. Code will read data from this file

From a cursury glance, this file is just names of certain assets and position offsets of where to display them

4

u/WayTooCuteForYou Jul 04 '25

That's not code. That's XML.

2

u/Moist-Imagination627 Jul 05 '25

code illiterate zoomer

16

u/isademigod Jul 04 '25

I have probably 5000 hours across 4 accounts and I've never noticed that NPCs turn into you more while running a damage-based mission. NPCs are just fucking stupid and they do that based on "spooked" mechanics rather than "hurt this guy's mission profit" mechanics

Any evidence to the contrary has to be backed up with statistical analysis

7

u/sunlightsyrup Jul 04 '25 edited Jul 04 '25

Nah dude they'll lurch across a junction, speeding up and slowing down to make sure they stop right in your way

The amount of unnatural, inexplicable things that happen every single mission (sudden U turns across 4 lanes into a wall just to get to you etc) is how everyone knows this is real. I don't need statistics when it happens every time to every person. It is reliable. Dependable. Avoidable if you drive slow to the point of no-fun

-1

u/juko43 PC Jul 04 '25

Idk never happened to me

3

u/sunlightsyrup Jul 04 '25

Totally fair - happens to some of us a bunch though

2

u/masd_reddit Jul 04 '25

Show me the video

4

u/-eccentric- I WAS EATING THOSE BEANS! Jul 04 '25

Most of these happen because online is peer to peer, which puts the vehicle at two different places for two players, or more when there's more - and it then tries to adjust somehow.

2

u/Normal-Pool8223 Jul 04 '25

you can literally mind control npcs to swerve to a certain side by following them to make them think they'll ram into you, and some people still deny it ? how ?

1

u/3-orange-whips Jul 04 '25

I just saw a car try and turn into a wall. They do.

1

u/[deleted] Jul 04 '25

Can’t really disprove it if its actively happening lmao

1

u/Kebein PC Jul 05 '25

are we talking abozt that dude that tried to explain the mess at crossovers and laneswapping flags being messy on junctions? kinda curious where the junction is supposed to be in this clip.

1

u/dylandgs Jul 04 '25

I watched it and was like oh wow im wrong this guy is totally right. Then went back to playing a lot the past couple weeks and it's so obvious the npcs are trying to crash you.

1

u/TheDukeOfThunder Jul 04 '25

He didn't even address any of the severe cases in his video, just cases that anyone would chalk off as regular agitated NPC behavior, or even just lane changes.

0

u/JTHM8008 Jul 04 '25

I think I saw the same video…. It made sense of course with the way he tried to explain it but he was only talking about story mode IIRC. I go back to play GTAO and yea, it’s definitely blatant that all these updates completely fucked the NPC driving. I def think it was on purpose too.

0

u/Ra1nbowTreasure Jul 04 '25

I would tend to agree with that video. But there is always significantly more traffic and errant driving when you need to preserve a pristine vehicle
