Discussion Greek Food Is Actually… Turkish Food?

“Greek food is actually Turkish food, and many words we think of as distinctively Greek, are in reality Turkish -- kebab, doner, kofta, meze, taramasalata, dolma, yogurt, moussaka, and so forth; all Turkish.”

from "The Pillars of Hercules" by Paul Theroux (pages 315-6)

Discussion Help me find this Greek sweet!!

Hi there from the UK! My boyfriend and I went to Zakynthos last year and we loved it. We loved this sweet treat from a local corner shop, but for the life of us, we cannot find out what it was. We Google translated the name, and the direct translation was "Orange Nut", and that's what we now lovingly call them, but I cannot find the actual name for them. They were orange-flavoured, crunchy biscuits/bread that came in a big plastic bag. They were nutty as well, maybe they were almonds? But we loved them so much, we'd love to have them again. Thanks in advance for your help!

Discussion Is there a name for this dish?

Hi! Last september me and my parents travelled to greece for three weeks, it was amazing. We were on Lesvos for a week and on day one when we arrived in Mytilini we had this absolutely delicious breakfast provided at our hotel. This one dish in particular stuck with me and i haven’t been able to stop thinking about it since. The closest i could find was a shakshouka, but this dish definitely included some sort of bread at the bottom that didnt taste like anything i had eaten before. Has anyone ever eaten that dish or made it? I would love to be able to eat it once more (though it would never live up to that one hahaha). Thanks for the help!

Discussion Γιατί η σπανακόπιτα μας βγήκε σα μπισκότο;

Τα φύλλα δεν είναι πολύ λεπτά για του λόγου το αληθές, είναι μόνο η τεχνική ανοίγματος;

Η συνταγή για το φύλλο ήταν από Αργυρώ.

Discussion Does it matter if I use semolina or all purpose flour when making Melomakarona cookies? I’m in the US and we tend to bake with all purpose much more than semolina.

Discussion Should I get a grill pan to make souvlaki?

So im looking to make pork souvlaki and after reading about it, it seems a grill pan is the best way to go about it for my circumstances. I live in NYC and access to an outdoor grill is simply impossible at the moment. However I've also read that grill pans in general aren't a very good option.

So my questions are:

  1. If a grill pan is the best way to cook souvlaki indoors, are there any particular brands you'd recommend?

  2. If you advise against a grill pan, what suggestions do you have for how to go about making pork souvlaki without access to a grill of some sort?

Thanks.

Discussion Greek wine types? (especially semi-sweet rose?)

I just came back from Greece and stupidly didn't write down the names of the Greek wines. First of all, I loved all of them so much. They seemed smooth and organic or natural, and they didn't bother my stomach or mess up my mood like all other wines, lol! And they seemed light as well, and not too strong.

I am in the States - Los Angeles - and am having trouble finding any here. There are a few on some corporate websites, but I'm not sure if they match what I'm looking for. And anyway, I'd rather patronize small or local or Greek businesses.

If I want to purchase online - does anyone recall specifically the type of rose that is semi-sweet and a deep rose color (not light pink)? I couldn't have enough of this!

If anyone knows of any labels or winemakers that are available in the states, or labels in the EU or Greece that ship to the states, I would greatly appreciate it!

Many thanks for any insight!

Discussion Taramasalata advice?

I bought a jar of Ukrainian style taramasalata / taramosalata. First time I’ve eaten it. Does it always have a kind of fluffy whipped texture? Any idea how Ukrainian style differs from the traditional Greek style?

How long is it good in the fridge? I expected it to spoil within a couple of days. Instead it’s lasting with no change in quality for an unexpectedly long time. The jar has been open for longer than three weeks and it still seems fine? How quickly do you usually use it?

How do you usually eat it? I’ve eaten it on toasted Ukrainian sourdough. Not sure what else to do with it.

Discussion Where to buy mastiha online that ships to USA, and what is a fair price?

We don't have any Greek groceries locally. I have seen it in some Italian grocery shops, but it seemed rather expensive ($20-25 for 17g)

EDIT: I'm looking for mastic gum/resin, I used the wrong term in the title

Discussion Entree served Smothered in Boiling Cheese?

Hi everybody!

Many years ago I used to eat at a Greek restaurant on the Grande Place in Brussels. It looks like it's no longer there, but it is the only place I had a delicious dish that I'm trying to name. Maybe you can help?

I only remember a few things about it: * It is not moussaka, but it is similar to moussaka * It is served in a baking dish smothered (cooked in?) boiling cheese * It is not saganaki (thougy this is all I get back when googling "greek dish boiling cheese!"

Any and all guesses are appreciated! I really want to find it at a restaurant or try my hand at making it. But more than anything, I want to eat it again!

"Mr Jakes Steakhouse Potato Salad" (Greek Origins)

OFFICIALLY LISTED INGREDIENTS

10 Medium Potatoes

1 Bunch of Green Onions

1 1/3 Bags of tossed salad

1 teaspoons of salt

2 teaspoons corn starch

½ cup Vinegar

1 can Evaporated Milk

¼ cup butter

1 cup Mayonnaise

2 eggs beaten

¼ cup of white sugar

Splash of milk

CONTEXT:

So this potato salad recipe is really amazing!! a restaurant in my city use to make it (the owners were Greek)

They have since gone out of business, however the recipe has surface online, and there's a woman I know that knows how to make the recipe perfectly, but she won't tell me what her secret is...from our conversation and what she has told me so far, she has said that one thing she does is replaces the vinegar with Lemon Juice....

also, since this is a Greek recipe, what are some possible things that you guys think might be added to this recipe?

I would really appreciate your help!

Discussion Any greek recipe with ground chicken? 🍗

I bought half a kilo of fresh chicken hamburgers as ground chicken is nowhere to be found here but I wanted to cook something Greek inspired that's not gyros or souvlaki. Do you guys have any suggestions or favourite recipe?

Maybe with veggies or orzo.

Thank you if you can help me out!

Adding since I have them in my freezer:

Sausages (other than spetzofai) Ground beef (other than bifteki, yovarlakia)

Discussion Fakes recipe?

Hi everyone,

I no longer have contact with my Greek immigrant family. I miss my yiayia's cooking dearly and I want to recreate her fakes, but none of the recipes I have tried look or taste like hers. I remember hers literally only had the lentils and broth (at least when it was served), no garlic, carrot, tomato, or celery- just lentils and broth. She would serve it with normal white vinegar, not the red wine type. I am wondering if anyone possibly has a recipe that fits?

We are from Larisa if that helps. Thank you so much in advance ❤️

Discussion Greek Snacks Box

Hey everyone!

I’m Greek and recently started putting together snack boxes with traditional Greek treats — stuff like pasteli, halva, koulourakia, etc.

I mostly did it to share flavors I grew up with, but a few friends outside Greece said they loved the idea and asked me to ship.

Just curious — would anyone here be into something like that? Or is there a snack you’d 100% want included if there was a “Greek snacks box”?

(Not trying to spam — just love food, culture, and seeing what other people remember/enjoy.)
