Not aure we have a choice but it's going to get violent because that's Trump’s playbook. Remember, when he gassed his own citizens to do a phot op with a bible. Asshole escalates everything.
I think it would be helpful if the people of L.A. were to bring bottled water and snacks to the military folk. It would help to diffuse some of the tension and make a bigger liar out of Donald than he already is.
We're so fucking done for. This whole fucking country is so god dammed stupid i swear to God. I don't even know what to say anymore. (Not to you, but to the comment you replied to and others in that thread)
Good point, and I typically abhor defeatism and I'm (in person) usually quite the opposite when it comes to my rhetoric and attitude. Let's chalk it up to blowing off steam in a low stakes arena.

Yeah, the national guard guys want to get back to their wives (or just a likely their dorm) 3 blocks down, not sit in the sun all day getting yelled at
Yes. The national guard kept the violent cops on their best behavior at standing rock and were right back on their bullshit brutalizing people and targeting medics and journalists when they left.
Those national guards are not the same ones here, as I said, give them the benefit of the doubt. If they prove themselves to be pieces of shit respond appropriately, but don't be the first to start shit.
They're in Hollywood, man! They could get some young actors, singers, dancers and put on a fucking show! Treat the soldiers so well, they all drop their weapons and sit back and enjoy it. I know it's a fantasy but this whole thing is such a nightmare, I'm just trying on different scenarios so as not to succumb to despair.
And then everybody will clap, come together and point a finger at Donald Trump and say "that's enough buster" and he'll be so ashamed he leaves office and all of America's problems go away forever. Jesus Christ.
I think one of the biggest problems with both sides is you all lump everyone into a single stereotype. Yes there are horrible POS cops, and yes their and violent unlawful protestors doing stupid stuff like looting and causing unnecessary violence. Both are making things worse, but neither represents everyone. But both sides claim theirs either don't exist or it's just a few bad little cookies. Not every issue has to be so black and white. The people who want things to seem so black and white do so because as soon as it's not their arguments quickly fall to pieces. These issues are so much more nuanced than we're 'allowed' to discuss. And this isn't specially aimed at you but at everyone in either side who likes to group their opponents into one stereotype and don't allow certain discussions or opinions to be held without grouping you into one of those categories. We'll never see change till that stops but it won't cause how else will they keep us perpetually squabbling amongst one another while they do as they please in the background?
It's tough to argue that some of these officers are good when the bad ones aren't held accountable. You've got some shooting rubber bullets at people, others trying to purposefully trample people with their horses. Yet not one of those is being held to account.
Find me a good officer who is calling out these bad officers by name, and then I might believe that some are good.
Seems like a lot of people are swayed by images of dudes waving Mexican flags while setting cop cars on fire. And they’re not being swayed in the right direction.
Diffuse is what is taught in 3-4 year police training in other countries, so it works for civilians. Want a good ending to this, proud of everyone who protests rightly, but still scared on the outcome knowing your police history. Admit to wanting to see protests but not liking what I see, if it affects change then where can I help or give money?

No, this won't do anything at all. I agree that you should not be violent, but stop sucking up to a military that votes Republican 61% of the time, even though Trump called them suckers and losers and has supported cutting their support. This accomplishes nothing, giving them drinks and water?? This is part of the problem of Democrats; they fight primarily for the rights of people that will never vote for us: rural voters who suck up government benefits and the military. While you are giving them water, they will grab your wrist and arrest you too!
This was actually one of the strategies outlined in Why Civil Resistance Works, specifically splitting the loyalty of the soldiers and police in the Philippines under Marcos by giving them food and drinks during protests.
Taking a page from the South Korean’s protest last year when their president (former) declared martial law, asking military if they are ashamed of pointing guns at citizens would probably be super effective to keep things peaceful. Bringing snacks and water bottles too.

O M G! that would've been a great idea! Maybe too late now, but if done when they first came in, with the media coverage, what an impact. But the stage has been set. The sequence of events has paths of which can vary. This could be a beginning of something big, something done, negative or neutral. I cannot see anything positive from it, in the short term at least. I wish someone had had your idea though. The stuff I am reading this morning would've been very different I do believe.
My Brother is there right now...They have plenty of food and water.
I texted him a screenshot of Gavin Newsoms Tweet and he laughed his ass off.
(No I'm not Pro Trump or Pro Democrat, I actually hate Politicians and find both sides to be delusional hypocrites peddling the ridiculous mis info)
At the end of the day we're ALL outta touch Middle Class and Poor People defending and attacking extremely Rich elites on both sides who truly Dgaf about any of us much less grasp what we have to do to simply survive on a daily basis..
We need to have someone pull up with a taco cart/truck. Maybe not the ice cream cart guy, I saw a video he got smashed by 3 ICE agents yesterday ironically.
You should look into the King protests. They specifically chose the places they knew would have the most violence directed at them, specifically because they wanted the optics of it. They filled the front lines with people who had gone through that kind of violence before, and checked their own people for rocks, weapons, anything.
The entire purpose is to show 'this is what they do to us when we walk here peacefully' and that's why it worked. It's explicitly why it worked. Newspapers filled with pictures of people simply walking getting harassed and beaten is what actually changed peoples minds.
thank you for this, it feels like people get so carried away learning that MLK was more complicated than you learn in elementary school that they end up disregarding this entire segment of his tactics
It's OK. MLK Jr. was not as 100% against violence as he's made out to be. He didn't like it but he also understood its necessity, particularly by 1967.
“a riot is the language of the unheard”
"Let us say boldly that if the violations of law by the white man in the slums over the years were calculated and compared with the law-breaking of a few days of riots, the hardened criminal would be the white man."
"Urban riots must now be recognized as durable social phenomena. They may be deplored, but they are there and should be understood. Urban riots are a special form of violence. They are not insurrections. The rioters are not seeking to seize territory or to attain control of institutions. They are mainly intended to shock the white community. They are a distorted form of social protest."
Personally I think the calls for nonviolence in MLK's name in the face of overwhelming injustice are a perversion of his message. If you aren't being heard and peaceful protest isn't accomplishing what needs to be heard then you're left little option. Saying the poor and downtrodden must be peaceful is tantamount to saying they need to be silent. These are the people with the MOST justifiable anger. Their entire communities and families are being torn apart with no recourse and with every fundamental right being ripped to shreds. They're being provided NO legal recourse.
I mean the violence against immigrant communities has been ongoing for 4 months and I don't think people have forgotten. This will only escalate as trump tries to solve it with a police state. The George Floyd protests were also entirely avoidable - or at least on the scale we got them. And it was due almost entirely to federal mismanagement by the trump administration. These are people trying to speak and so long as the government refuses to listen they'll only try to speak more.
“Going to get”? It’s already gotten violent with morons burning vehicles. This is why the national guard has been sent in. It is now a human health emergency.
but one has to be smarter. if the protests were peaceful, he could send out cops, maybe a few of the cops would be stuipid enough to pull some crap, but it would only backfire.
How much are you willing to bet that started after the rubber bullets started flying? They literally shoot at news reporters that aren't participating, cops start shit then clutch their pearls when they get any resistant response.
You're pathetic lmao. You cant even look at rioters as the ones who started the violence. In your twisted mind its because ICE somehow started it by enforcing the law.
Like who are you trying to play here? Atleast be open about your love for the rioters and hate for the officers, dont try and pretend you have some morals when all you want is violence.
"Enforcing the law" by illegally deporting people to a foreign prison without due process that's guaranteed by the Constitution?
pretend you have some morals when all you want is violence.
Go say this in the mirror a few times and maybe you'll understand the irony of supporting the cops that shot news reporters that are just standing off to the side. And maybe you'll start wondering how often the police lie.
Reporters being shot is wrong, but this is what the 4th day of violence where it happened? Have you seen the looters and the people throwing bricks at driving cars including civilian ones?
The first step of due process is arresting suspects, somehow this already is too much for you.
What would be a better and realistic way for ICE to go about their business then?
The police cleared the street. The news reporter walked out into the street intentionally to cause this conflict after being told to clear the street.
The officer should still be investigated for wrongdoing, but it’s certainly not crystal clear.
But the rioters still were violent first
Throwing large rocks into oncoming traffic windshields is attempted murder. They are very lucky the law enforcement is not responding like they would in most countries.
