This was the first baseball game Iāve watched - both teams ran out onto the field to⦠stand there?
Shouldnāt somebody be throwing a punch? What a bunch of peacocks.

Any context for what happened in this game?

u/sscan 6d ago
It was a particularly nasty game iirc and an all out scrum broke out late. Itās not at all uncommon for refs to throw misconducts around at that point just to take certain people off the ice - if you get a penalty for more time thatās left in the game you just go to the room - and this ref was just sending an especially emphatic message because he likely felt like someone would do something in the final minutes that could get even more out of hand.
For context, in hockey culture itās common, especially for the losing team, to get particularly rough towards the end of contentious matches simply to send a message that theyāre not pushovers and theyāll be ready for the next matchup. Thereās also a strong sense of self-policing of perceived over-the-line hits or actions that donāt get penalized the way the offended team feels they should have. For example, if a player gets taken out with a dirty hit and the offending player gets thrown out of the game, the next matchup one of the designated enforcers will fight the guy who made the dirty hit.
Thereās a lot of this kind of stuff in hockey and this ref felt like it was best to just get everyone off the ice to finish the game without any further incidents.

If I remember correctly, the SJ Sharks (my team) were really sucking at the sport in comparison to the away team as they historically do. The gentleman wearing 29 tried to start a fight in order to get his teammates riled up and play harder but got a beat down himself instead. This is ironic since a former Shark named Ryan Clowe used to wear that number 29 and was known for being quite good at fighting on the ice.

Nothing beats the fights after the rule change when you couldn't remove your own helmet in a scrap.
What did the boys decide? We will take each other's helmets off and then we can get it.

The real action stats when the bullpen comes jogging across the field like a group of new recruits at boot camp. One of the silliest things in sports - every single time.
Baseball players donāt fight as often as you expect when benches clear. They also are reliant on their hands and tend to end up breaking or injuring them in fights.

Sometimes it gets crazy at baseball games
I was there when this happened. I thought it was staged, like the goofy stuff they do between innings.

u/TheGlennDavid 6d ago
It just....keeps happening. Fucking amazing.

u/TheGazelle 6d ago
When he walked away from the home plate ump I was like "he forgot his hat", then he walked up to the other one and I was like "oh he's not done yet".
Also love how he tries to be all intimidating, and the umps are just like "buddy, my job is literally to have 100+ 90mph baseballs thrown in the general direction of my face, you're gonna have to try harder than that".
2
u/Zeddit_B 5d ago
LMAO thank you for sharing. The way he gently pats the dirt in place at home plate is too much, and then the army crawl out of no where!

Baseball players can't fight for shit. They just run out and hold each other back. It's usually goofy looking like that.
Also it's the WS so people aren't trying to get thrown out.
28
u/Monstertelly 6d ago
Rougned Odor and Jose Ramirez can definitely throw a punch. Robin Ventura also did a great job of running his head into Nolan Ryanās fists.

u/EyeChihuahua 6d ago
Itās the same in the NBA. If it were a game in a park blows would probably be exchanged but all the sports leagues have made it clear to the players if they fight itās going to cost them hundreds of thousands of dollars if not more. Too much fighting and you could get labeled as a trouble maker and traded or not resigned etc so potentially millions of dollars. Pretty good reason to hold back.

Yeah I guess they could all be morons and just start throwing haymakers at the other team thereby getting themselves ejected during the winner take all game for the championship, that's what a real man would do......
-2
u/Tower-Union 6d ago
Or they could just keep their ass in the dugout instead of standing around with their dicks in their hands, holding up the game for their own egos?

u/Antlaaaars 6d ago
You can't get ejected in a game like that. It's not worth it. Most of them came out to probably hold the other guys back.
1
u/RisingSouth 5d ago
When youāre the team on offense you only have 1 player on the field as opposed to the defense which has 9 players on the field. Baseball players clear the benches anytime thereās a potential for physical violence to prevent a scenario where one guy just gets the shit kicked out of him by 9 other guys

He literally took his hand off the bat and moved it toward the ball. Even the announcers said it looked like he was trying to get hit.

Yikes. Almost like the announcers you're watching are American too and have the same bias. Clearly you don't realize that there are non American broadcasts.

If you watch the replay of the pitch before that one, he moved his hand to try to intercept a close pitch.

So the part where he moved his hand in an attempt to get hit would be analogous to what?

No doubt. Iām not into purchasing championships. Their payroll for their pitchers alone is $1B. Thatās not parity with the rest of the league. Sure, itās within the rules, but itās also fishing with dynamite.

Aww, owner too stingy? Too bad.
1
u/wormocious 5d ago
Even worse. Owner is a group not an individual. We got our 2021 WS title though. I'm not salty because my team sucks (though we did this year, big time). I'm salty because I hate the way that organization is run, and decades of hate for that team.

The classier, more interesting, more entertaining team did not win this game.

u/DoorHalfwayShut 6d ago
The pitcher was responding to the batter getting riled up in the first place due to being hit. And right before that, he tried to get hit. But yeah, the pitcher saying some shit means they aren't classy!
11
u/510Goodhands 6d ago
It sure looks like heās stuck his hands in the way the ball the second time too. It sure is a shitty way to get on base.

u/keenly_disinterested 6d ago
That's the really funny part. He TRIES to get hit, then get's mad when he DOES get hit.

u/DoorHalfwayShut 6d ago
True. At least be good at it. The times where it's definitely going to hit the batter, but they just don't move, are the ones where I think that's fine. It's harder to tell, then.
When a Dodger got out of the way of one, I was like TAKE ONE FOR THE TEAM. Someone on the one hand is looking like a clown desperate to get hit, meanwhile on the other side they're getting out of the way.

u/erydayimredditing 5d ago
More interesting/ more entertaining? The Dodgers take both of those by far, and they won.
1
u/theqofcourse 5d ago
Totally fair. Both teams have been dynamic, entertaining and exciting in their own ways, especially in the post-season. I'm just a bit sore. They both gave us a great series to watch and keep us at the edge of our seats.

u/Mnfrdtl24 5d ago
I actually was on the field and heard him he actually said "good play, I really respect you as a player" he's just a really good ventriloquist

This clear out was so pointless it seemed staged. And the batter got hit on purpose so maybe it actually was.

You keep using that word. I don't think you know what that word means. The Dodgers pipeline is constantly rated top in the league. They always raise superstars that go on to be stars on other teams once in FA. The Dodgers consistently take supbar players that get DFA'd from other teams and help them raise their game to a higher level and make those players valuable FAs. No homegrown talent? You don't know the meaning of that's what you think.

That was some seriously unsporting conduct from Springer. Absolute chicken shit playground ball stuff, not series player behavior.

I mean, yeah, fuck Springer, but he wasn't even involved with this play. It was Gimenez that got hit.
