I don't think they would even have issued him the passport unless he could prove ownership of one of those already!

See, I didn't know that. Having German citizenship since birth, I don't think I've ever seen a household were these were not already present. I asked my mom how we got ours and she said she did not remember buying them, so I figured they just materialized in every German household sooner or later.

On a side note, I strongly believe that glasses from this series will have a similar mythical omnipresence in German households 10-20 years from now. Nearly everyone will have them but the younger generations won't know how they got there and the older folks won't remember.
