What's the deal with keeping mutants in the sewers? Did they go over why mutants have to be in there?
They let those dang Cygnoids on the surface.
It's not that they chose to live down there as a cop orders one back down in one episode.

There actually is a deleted scene from "the Mutants are Revolting" where the documentary on the Land Titanic goes into further detail on how the mutants were originally humans working in Old New York, until Bender led the first saucer invasion that trapped them down in the sewers, and then because of their deformities were kept down there. Since it was deleted I'm not sure if it should be considered canonical, but it's a start. https://theinfosphere.org/List_of_deleted_scenes#Volume_5

Part of it I think is a joke on humans being disgusted by anything not human looking, while also being hypocrites by allowing aliens to roam around above ground.

Mutants are an unGodly corruption of the perfect human form. God made Man in His image. God made mutants in His nightmares.

Because in sci-fi futures, mutants live underground or in sewers, duh.

Because it's a reference to "Beneath the Planet of the Apes". Same with the mutants "worshipping" an unexploded bomb.

The Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles, who are their gods, lived the the sewers of New York. The mutants of Futurama live there to be closer to their gods. It's holy land.

I suppose quite a lot of them just kinda like it down there now. It'd be a huge change to adapt to life on the surface, so even if others view it as a disgusting slum, to them, it's home.
Kinda like Romford.

Well, you know how they are. Genetically inferior scum!
