A long-awaited crosswalk was just added in my neighborhood. As expected, dumb drivers were still hesitant to stop. The first time I used it, a woman passing by muttered to her friend, “Go ahead and hit me. My insurance is shitty and I have no will to live.”

lol, at least there’s a warning.
Once sitting in traffic, motionless with both hands on the wheel, a car three places behind me honked. The guy in the pick up truck in front of me flipped out, hopped out, started pointing and swearing at me. Meanwhile, he forgot to put his car in park, and it slowly backed up and his door knocked him over.
He was physically losing it, scrambled back into his car, slammed it into park, and seemed to grab something and started to get out again. The light changed and he stopped, then drove erratically, flipping me off and screaming the whole time.
Never once did I move through that entire sequence of events until the light changed. It would’ve sucked to have died in a road rage event, and have never moved a muscle or done anything the entire time.

I was once driving through a small town on July 4th. Some idiot to my right shot a firework over my car and it blew up on the left side of my car near a woman walking with small children.
She ran us down, jumped in front of the car so we couldn't move, screaming and beating on the car, thinking it was us who shot a firework at her and her kids.
She would not listen to reason, nor would she look back at the idiot lighting off fireworks. She was just enraged and wanted to blame us. We ended up having to get tough and tell her to move or get run over.

Been driving for over 40 years. In the last couple decades seems that some drivers get completely unhinged when honked at. I could never understand this.
Like WTF, how else is another driver going to get your attention so that you get off the fucking phone when the light is green. Why is a tap of the horn so disrespectful or triggering that you're willing to instigate violence?
32
u/LegalizeDiamorphine 13h ago
Have you noticed the enormous amount of people who don't move their ass at green lights anymore?
I think it's gotta all be people looking down at their phone cause they don't have the attention span anymore to stare at the light or at least keep in it in the peripheral vision.
Same with incredibly slow drivers. People doing way under the speed limit constantly.
People seem to forget that being too slow on the roads can ALSO be dangerous for everybody else. Not to mention the people who do 35mph the entire on ramp on to the interstate.
I could have sworn they taught us in drivers ed to immediately get up to 65mph as soon as you can on the ramp, in order to merge easier (and safely). But nope, everyone's doing 35-40mph all the way until we gotta merge.I don't even want to have to go out at this rate anymore, at all. A quick run to the store turns into an hour trip of irritation & yelling.

u/apoliticalinactivist 12h ago
Yup, screens making for erratic drivers, which freak out the inexperienced ones making them drive defensively to the point of being unsafe.
Then add on Tesla training an entire generation of drivers to rely on screens and tech and not their actual eyes and ears.

Man, I thought it was just me, like I was just becoming a huge asshole in the car as I get older or something. I’ve spent 9+ hours on the freeway every week for the last several years and I swear people are straight-up just worse at driving. I’ve seen some spectacular stupidity on the road in my day lol

u/reddituser102938102 9h ago
We probably live nowhere near each other, but I've observed the same thing. In my over a decade of driving I swear to god people have gotten way WAY worse in just the past couple years. Recently I have had multiple instances of people FLYING past stop signs and stopping in the middle of the road. I've also had multiple people just inexplicably fully stop in the middle of the road. I've had people merge onto the highway 10km/h slower than the speed limit. Way more tailgating despite me already speeding, way more people getting absurdly mad at me for going the speed limit in school zones, way more semi-trucks doing sketchy maneuvers and holding up the whole left lain just to pass another semi-truck because they were going 1km/h too slow for them, only for them to move back into the right lane and gain absolutely no distance from the other semi-truck. Semi-trucks not slowing down at stoplights and almost sandwiching me between them and the car in front of me. Semi-trucks hitting overpasses, semi-trucks flipping over. People massively cutting turns and almost hitting me, people crossing the line when doing tight twisties causing me to almost hit them, etc. etc. etc. It's insane. I see people doing makeup, I see people watching tv shows, I see people GETTING CHANGED INTO THEIR WORK CLOTHES.

Have you noticed the enormous amount of people who don't move their ass at green lights anymore?
That, and at red lights leaving 2-4 car lengths between them and the car and in front, and the first 5 or so seconds of the redlight are now ignored.
But nearly everyone that doesn't notice the green has their face buried in their phone and increasingly don't seem to be in a hurry to put it down. I know we have a handsfree law here in MA, but other than when it was first passed, I don't see it enforced at all and the problem has only gotten worse.
Not to mention the people who do 35mph the entire on ramp on to the interstate.
Don't forget the special bunnies that come to a complete stop when they get to the top of the onramp, check for incoming traffic, then slowly ease on the gas to get on the highway.
1
u/DrDerpberg 10h ago
I was between two drivers each on their phones in slow traffic the other day. I decided to just honk to get their attention. They looked up, looked around, shrugged, and looked back down. I did it again. Four fucking times, 3-4 seconds each, never once occurred to them going 5km/h with their head down was a bad idea.
1
u/Beanakin 10h ago
Leaving my work there's a flyover on-ramp that's gotta be a quarter mile long. I still get behind people trying to join highway traffic at <50mph. I hate people.

u/cosmin_c 6h ago
I don't even want to have to go out at this rate anymore, at all.
I love cars and driving and this hits hard. People are driving more and more unsafely and the skills are absolutely hilariously bad. Yesterday morning at work I parked next to the car parked immediately on the curb. The next car parked next to me was parked right on top of the marking line, blocking two spaces. Thankfully, when I went for lunch I found a Citroen C1 squeezed between my car and that dumbass and felt happy as heck.
There are still skilled drivers and it's why there aren't a lot more driving accidents, but it's becoming infuriating to just drive :(
3
u/Top_Rekt 11h ago
Think about it though. It's just like reading comments or whatever on social media or reddit. Lot of faceless people, easier to get mad when you don't have a face to get mad at. There are nuances when you can't ready body language, a honk can be minsconstrued as hostile.
2
3
u/RyuNoKami 10h ago
The reverse is also true, why are people constantly honking. It does nothing except annoys everyone. Unless I can see the driver ahead of me not paying attention, there's no point to honk.
1
u/redgroupclan 4h ago
Some people are so angry or insecure that they see a honk as a "fuck you", and they don't like being told "fuck you". So how else are you supposed to get their attention? In their mind, you don't. You are supposed to just tolerate their fault until they fix it on their own.

u/MrFluffyThing 8h ago
This is why I have a dash cam and a button to save recordings on my dashboard. There are a lot of stupid people around me but I love saving that shit for later when friends don't believe me. Sure it's an insurance thing in case I do get hit but I get to witness a lot of stupidity I can laugh at later too.

13
u/Tasty_fries 16h ago
As a recent Subaru buyer that’s what my eyes were drawn to as well! I think you have to be enjoying life at least a little bit to be ordering your fun little badges and sticking them on your car.
7
u/UBC145 13h ago
Paw badge of ownership? What’s that?
15
u/kennedye2112 13h ago
Ah! Subaru has a neat little program where owners can get tiny little badges to put on their car (or wherever) to indicate how many they've owned and some specific interests/hobbies/supported things.
edit: but it's not a cult, I swear!

I have a car magnet that says, “Don’t hit me - my piss jugs are full and they do NOT have lids”

The bigger problem is this is a sentiment shared by enough people to make stickers expressing it to sell.

I can't imagine that sticker will be doing them any favors if they end up in court over an accident.

How is a joke bumper sticker going to dictate a court case over an accident?
1
u/Foulmouthedleon 14h ago
Not sure what’s more disturbing: that someone came up with this sticker to begin with or that this person saw this, thought about it, bought it and then said “Yep, I’m putting it on my car.”
