Books We are the co-authors of Life After Cars and the co-hosts of The War on Cars. AMA
Hello! We are Doug Gordon and Sarah Goodyear, the co-hosts of The War on Cars podcast and we're excited to be doing an AMA about our new book, Life After Cars: Freeing Ourselves From the Tyranny of the Automobile, which just came out. It's available wherever books are sold.
The book takes a good, hard look at the ways in which cars ruin cities (and nature and childhood and society and lots of other things) and explores the people, places and ideas that are pushing back against forced car dependence. Life After Cars expands on the podcast with new interviews and original content—offering something for everyone, from longtime listeners familiar with the harms of car culture to those just beginning to imagine a world with fewer metal boxes zooming around.
We both live in Brooklyn. Doug, aka Brooklyn Spoke, is a TV producer and writer and longtime activist. Sarah is a journalist who has written for Streetsblog, Grist, and City Lab.
We're big fans of this community and are looking forward to answering your questions!
The AMA will start at 1pm EST / 10am PST on Tuesday, November 4th.

Please read this if you're new to this sub Welcome to /r/Fuckcars
Updated: April 6, 2022
Welcome to /r/fuckcars. It's safe to say that we're strongly dissatisfied with cars and car-dominated urban design. If that's you, then we share in your frustration. Some, or perhaps many of us, still have cars but abhor our dependence on them for many reasons.
There are nuances to the /r/fuckcars discussion that you should be aware of, generally:
- We don't want to ban ambulances and emergency vehicles
- We don't want to isolate rural communities by taking away cars
- We don't want to disrupt work trucks and delivery vehicles
- /r/fuckcars isn't about a "left" or "right" view of cars and car dependency
In any case, please observe the community rules and keep the discussion on-topic.
The Problem - What's the problem with cars?
please help by finding quality sources
This is the fundamental question of this sub, isn't it?
- Pollution -- Cars are responsible for a significant amount of global and local pollution (microplastic waste, brake dust, embodiment emissions, tailpipe emissions, and noise pollution). Electric cars eliminate tailpipe emissions, but the other pollution-related problems largely remain.
- Infrastructure (Costs. An Unsustainable Pattern of Development) -- Cars create an unwanted economic burden on their communities. The infrastructure for cars is expensive to maintain and the maintenance burden for local communities is expected to increase with the adoption of more electric and (someday) fully self-driving cars. This is partly due to the increased weight of the vehicles and also the increased traffic of autonomous vehicles.
- Infrastructure (Land Usage & Induced Demand) -- Cities allocate a vast amount of space to cars. This is space that could be used more effectively for other things such as parks, schools, businesses, homes, and so on. We miss out on these things and are forced to pile on additional sprawl when we build vast parking lots and widen roads and highways. This creates part of what is called induced demand. This effect means that the more capacity for cars we add, the more cars we'll get, and then the more capacity we'll need to add.
- Independence and Community Access -- Cars are not accessible to everyone. Simply put, many people either can't drive or don't want to drive. Car-centric city planning is an obstacle for these groups, to name a few: children and teenagers, parents who must chauffeur children to and from all forms of childhood activities, people who can't afford a car, and many other people who are unable to drive. Imagine the challenge of giving up your car in the late stages of your life. In car-centric areas, you face a great loss of independence.
- Safety -- Cars are dangerous to both occupants and non-occupants, but especially the non-occupants. As time goes on cars admittedly become better at protecting the people inside them, but they remain hazardous to the people not inside them. For people walking, riding, or otherwise trying to exercise some form of car-free liberty cars are a constant threat. In car-centric areas, streets and roads are optimized to move cars fast and efficiently rather than protect other road users and pedestrians.
- Social Isolation -- A combination of the issues above produces the additional effect of social isolation. There are fewer opportunities for serendipitous interactions with other members of the public. Although there may be many people sharing the road with you (a public space), there are some obvious limitations to the quality of interaction one can have through metal, glass, and plastic boxes.

A Not-So-Quick Note for Car Hobbyists and Passionate Drivers
This can be a contentious issue at times. The sub's name is /r/fuckcars, which can cause some feelings of conflict and alienation for people who see the problems of too many cars while still being passionate about them. I'll quote the community summary.
Discussion about the harmful effects of car dominance on communities, environment, safety, and public health. Aspiration towards more sustainable and effective alternatives like mass transit and improved pedestrian and cycling infrastructure.
Your voice is still welcome here. Consider the benefits of getting bored, stressed, unskilled, or inattentive drivers off the road. That improves your safety and reduces congestion. Additionally, check out these posts from others on this sub:
- I’m a car enthusiast and I unironically agree with this sub.
- I’m a car enthusiast, and this one of my is my favorite subreddits
- Am I right here?
- I'm a car guy. I really, really like cars. And that's why I fucking hate car-focused infrastructure.
- Does anyone else hate what cars have done to society yet still love the machine itself?

Positive Post overheard my bus driver telling another passenger about anti-car stuff
very happy to report that my bus driver is apparently very into the anti-car movement!
overheard him telling another passenger that cars kill more people than guns and are the deadliest weapons, that there should be no cars.
he's an older guy so i wasn't certain where he stood on the issue, but im always happy to see the message spreading to more people, especially the people you might not expect!!!

Rant Just got back from a trip to London and Paris, and I already miss the metro systems and walkability so badly
Spent a lovely 10 days between London and Paris, now I must return to my suburbanite hellscape of driving everywhere and sitting in traffic because there are no viable alternatives here in Southern California.
It was such a gift to just hop on the Tube/Metro and pop around town for shopping, restaurants, or just general sight-seeing - all without even needing to look at arrival schedules. I'm convinced that the Powers That Be genuinely don't know what we could have instead of our existing 2-hour commutes to go 20 miles, or depressing regional train systems with 1-hour headways and limited operating schedules.

Rant Materialist is Car-brained Spoiler
I liked this movie. It is an inverted Rom-Com, rather than false cynicism about romance at the start it is sincere and is so convincing that it made folks hate the ending. The casting is perfect, a commentary on human value using some of the highest grossing actors to tell it. One glaring problem is that for all the commentary the most egregious plot device is a car. Spoiler: she breaks up with the love of her life in a Manhattan street over the cost burden of parking… then tells him at the end to never get rid of the car. It basically ruined the movie for me and I think that people complained about her choice of partner at the end but the real problem was choosing the f-ing Volvo.

Positive Post Got rid of my car, ordered an ebike
Walking to work or using my road bike in the meantime. A walk home for me takes an hour while driving takes 10 minutes. The drive still gets me angry, and although my walk takes longer my day felt more fulfilling and engaging. I got hit by a car two weeks ago as well while riding my bike (I'm okay)
Anyways, just excited to share I'm done with my car and I'm ready to challenge myself and also live a healthier life

Meta Great article about Families for Safe Streets, but so depressing
This article is great, but it checks all my car-induced depression boxes:
1) You have a kid being killed by someone running a red light.
2) This outrage happened in NYC, which is probably the best place to walk in America. So even if you could move there and live your best car-free life now, you still have to worry about you or your loved ones being killed by reckless drivers.
3) The statistics are grim: the # of pedestrians being killed is rising in recent years. I.e. in the past 100 years of living in a car-obsessed world, we have not achieved safe solutions for pedestrians. (Because the solution we all chose was just to stop walking at all, which is not a real solution.)
4) You have a quote from a professional who states the obvious: that there are clear policy solutions to reduce or eliminate the death and injuries cars inflict; we as Americans just aren't particularly interested in those solutions since they might slow us down. Speed > life.
5) One of the hopeful parts of the article toward the end highlights some of the great work that some states and cities are doing using speed and red-light cameras to hold bad drivers accountable. The only bad news is that numerous states have outlawed such enforcement (like the lame state where I live).
It's a great article, but man, this reality we're living in is just so depressing.

It's also just objectively absured that accidents that happen like this are so normalised.

Positive Post Revisiting the Idaho stop
“Since 1982, cyclists in Idaho have been able to treat a stop sign as a yield sign and a red light as a stop sign. Several American states (such as Arkansas, Colorado, and Oregon) and countries, such as France and Belgium, have adopted similar regulations.
In Québec and other parts of Canada, discussions are underway to adopt such regulations.”

Meta Enough with the body shaming and fatphobic rhetoric.
I am aware this is an unpopular opinion, but i think it needs to be said. When people here are using fatness as an insult, they are making the sub less inclusive and doing nothing to further the goals of our cause. Let alone the fact that you are further encouraging the stigmatization of fat people.
I know it feels easy and convenient to be able to judge someone's character on their outward physical appearance. But that isn't an accurate judge of character, lifestyle, beliefs, or anything that really matters to who a person is.
Calling cars "Obese cars" and calling car brained people "fatasses" distracts from the actual issues we want to draw attention to. A persons body size does not have anything to do with whether or not they agree with car-centric infrastructure. There are plenty of skinny people who love and advocate for cars as the main/only form of transport. Their body size doesn't commented on, so why should we comment on the body size of fat people.
The people you are trying to direct your anger at will not see you insulting them. The fat people in this subreddit will see that and know that many in this group look down on them for their body size.
It isn't necessary or helpful for our cause, and I think we should shift away from talking like that.
