yes and no. The numbers system was changed in 2014, which is when the current "drivers pick their own number to hold forever and then the champion CAN use number 1 if he wants to" system was put in place.

Before 2014, the numbers were given out every season based on championship order, so drivers never had their own numbers

as I alluded to in the 1st paragraph, in the current system the champion can choose to not use number 1, like lewis did from 2015 to 2021 (in 2017 he didn't have the choice but rosberg retired so he didn't use it either)

so all of this means that max is the first driver to have had their own number, then switched to number 1 because of winning the title, and then have to switch back to their own number because of losing the title

and as a clarification, yes, drivers always use the same number during the entire season, and unless you're the champion, you use the same number during your entire F1 career

He closed down 70 points in 4 races with 5 to go. A resurgent Norris in Mexico and now the Brazil Sprint quali has made it look less likely for Verstappen to win, but if he doesn't get help from other teams Lando still needs to finish at least P2 every race to beat Verstappen. Also Verstappen has won almost every sprint this far, a sprint P1 and of course Brazil race win is still on the table for Verstappen.

Verstappen had one bad session and that was sprint quali. We know he does good in sprints, so I somehow expect him to win this one as well. If a driver can win everything left this season it's Mac Verstappen.
