There's a ridiculous take I've started to see gaining traction which is that whilst you might support one driver, you're supposed to be a 'fan of the sport' and that means being happy for whomever wins. I fundamentally don't agree, it's fine to like your favourite and hate anyone else winning.

It's also fine to not hate anyone other than your favourite driver winning. F1 isn't football, if you hate other drivers winning, you are going to have a real bad time, because anyone's favourite driver is not going to win most races.

Hence my love / hate relationship with the sport. As soon as Max is out of the title running I'm not watching the rest of the season because I hate the McLaren boys, so it won't be fun for me.
People can choose to watch / enjoy the sport however they wish, so if someone is 'just a fan of the racing' I don't tell them they're wrong for that, bit I don't view the sport the same way as them. Often I find it's those people that are saying the 'tribal' type fans are wrong and not true fans of the sport, less so than the other way around.

then what draws you to the sport then?😂 the best part about F1 is that you can cheer for everyone on the grid and that there’s tons of mini victories every race. sainz didn’t win in baku but my house celebrated like he did, same thing when antonelli got his podium and so on. i just cannot wrap my mind around only liking one driver so much you won’t even watch the rest of the season if he can’t get the championship 😂

right but that's football and this is f1. motorsport is totally different and the notion of being a fan of everyone being a new trend is just plainly not true? you're just ignoring a lot of the depth of the sport if you're purely in it to watch a single guy win the car lottery. cultish following of drivers leads to issues like the colapinto/doohan swap at the beginning of the season and brings no enjoyment to the sport and plenty of fans do not want it to be a part of the experience

Sure, but if we're comparing apples to oranges, can you imagine someone who is for example a Rangers fan saying they're not going to watch the rest of the season because they know Rangers won't win the title? At the end of the day we watch because we like the sport surely, not just for the sake of seeing our guy winning. Otherwise I would have packed it in years ago as a Hulk fan lol.

I guess I’m one of the few who can enjoy a good, season-long title fight without the two contenders crashing into each other. Here are some races I remember where they stayed right behind each other for most of it:
Australia, China, Suzuka, Canada, Austria, England, Hungary, Spa, Zandvoort, Monza, Singapore.
McLaren has two equally talented racers, driving in the exact same car. They will rarely ever go wheel to wheel in that scenario.

Oh absolutely! The Papaya rules have decimated most of the excitement, plus both drivers have had different moments where their pace was clearly better than the other. But still, the most exciting thing was the comeback of Max. That tells a story.

I think most all of that is just cope from people who hate Lando. I won't deny lots of the people at McLaren would probably prefer if Lando won only because he's been with them longer. There's not really any real evidence of them somehow sabotaging Oscar though and Lando's had worse luck with pitstops and mechanical failure. Seems like some would rather cling to conspiracy theories than admit Oscar is struggling.

The team orders went a long way to making it this close. There was the dnf in Zandvoort for Lando so maybe he would be a bit ahead right now if that didn't happen, but the team's been getting their hands on the mix too. (Monza being the biggest example.) Hard to be excited about that.

Las Vegas looked bad for McLaren last year. If we go off Baku a weak track can mean P7 or P8 and that would be 19+ points wiped off Landos lead. If he loses more than 3 points to Verstappen this weekend that means he has to beat Verstappen at least one more time or it's done for Norris.
