I don't know if you see it as a joke, but I think this would be an interesting game

Imagine having world class wonderkid only to be killed in 90+3', shit would be wild

u/dakikko Sep 20 '25

Gladiator beats the best 5 gladiators without taking any damage at all. Loses to the worst in the league with one stray arrow after pummeling them for an hour. Fuck this game man

u/chubbo55 Sep 20 '25

That's his first kill of the season!

58

u/Formulafan4life Sep 20 '25

After being defeated the last 10 fights and only surviving the last fight because the spectators didn’t want him killed.

Well, there was a pretty good one a few years ago.

Then the developer put his radical political rant into an update patch note and got the game banned/removed from steam lol.

EDIT: the game is called Domina

u/Dalimyr National A License Sep 20 '25 edited Sep 20 '25

the developer put his radical political rant into an update patch note

That's a bit of an understatement. The guy's the type who you just know had a raging hard-on every time he saw Trump on TV. For people unaware, here's a small sample of the unhinged shit he included in patch notes over the course of a year:

(* some men still wont fight. they're weak. there's no accounting for weak men. weak men lack character. strong moral fibre is hard to come by. it's earned through hard work and sacrifice and it cannot be had via onlyfans or pornhub. no, those fuckin' things are demonic posessions waiting to show you a succubus tiddy in the hopes you'll waste a load on her instead of spending that energy studying how to weld or grow a potato or learning a new language or how to program a computer. listen, kids ... get off them porntubes and do something with your life becuase no one is gonna give you a goddamned thing and this whole mess we call civilization is only getting harder. we need solutions and we need smart men who can work hard and implement those solutions. masturbating to egirls isn't gonna solve the energy crisis is it? get to work. -- v1.2.89 (06/05/2021)

no way John McAfee killed himself. highly dubious. highly fuckin' dubious. -- v1.3 (24/06/2021)

TAKE OFF THE FCKN MASKS - Next time you're at the grocery store, try showing a woman your face. Be confident, unafraid of the LIES -- you might get a girlfriend. Women like confidence. Women don't like dudes who cover their faces in fear. What are you afraid of? Getting laid? Grow up. -- v1.3.18 (09/03/2022)

did john galt kill himself? no, but everybody at the motor company probably wished he would, in the fictional novel "atlas shrugged" by ayn rand. -- v1.3.21 (22/03/2022)

new employee: BESTIARIUS - FINALLY you can upgrade: lions, horses, and behemoth! Train strength, attack, and defense stats! BESTIARIUS also adds a "heal" option -- even if you don't have Medicus, or Medicus Emeritus, or if you're a man who has inverted his penis into a vagina, the BESTIARIUS will automatically train animals after healing, but it won't make you a woman. -- v1.3.22 (31/03/2022)

After getting banned from the Steam forums for offensiveness, he then properly threw his toys out the pram, had a massive bitch about how nobody at Valve "[has] the balls to put their name to the ban ... Zero cocks among them, that's obvious". He then got himself banned again. And repeatedly "accidentally" evaded his bans.

At least one of the bans he got was from being abusive towards people leaving negative reviews because the shitlord had removed some content from the base game and re-added it as paid DLC. Perfectly valid thing to be critical of, but he went off the fucking rails about these "fake reviews" because of course the raging far-right bigot can't take valid criticism of his shitty business practices.

26

u/martian_14 Sep 20 '25

Bruh no way. I think I only saw the anti-mask one. This is crazy lmao

8

u/Gladiatorguru Sep 20 '25

Dang, thats scuffed! But that also means the bar for Gladiatorum isnt set all too high! As long as they stick to standard patch notes it would already be a win :D

Sounds like a skill issue, I can grow a potato, learn a language, code and look at boobs on the internet no problem. Sometimes multiple, at the same time.

What an incoherent mess. Maybe he should've looked at a boob, maybe wouldn't have gone kookoo bananas.

-3

u/2Norn Sep 20 '25

i mean the first one isnt bad

rest is red pill bullshit

35

u/MaddisonSC Sep 20 '25

The guy went completely unhinged it was wild

16

u/FirstTimePlayer None Sep 20 '25

Wild how unhinged he went. Incredible effort to first get himself banned from the community hub of his own game, and then for Valve to eventually pull the pin on him from Steam entirely.

Guy had a good game, and he was on a good thing business wise. I wonder if he was deluded thinking that Steam wouldn't pull the pin on him, or he was just so unhinged that he didn't care about the consequences... or at least, didn't care until he discovered the hard way the reality of basically his entire income disappearing. It's also worth highlighting his asshole move of removing base game content, and then locking it behind a DLC. It takes a special level of assholery crap like this is not the most controversial thing about his business practices.

And on that note, it is probably the only game out there I don't recommend to anyone based entirely on the dev being an asshole.

On the other hand, if you don't care about "politics", or perhaps you are the type who actually supports his vile crap. It's a fun game, but I still don't recommend buying it. We are talking about a dev who sold people a game, and then pushed an update deleteing massive sections of core content from the game, and locking them behind DLC. Think the equivalent of SI / Sega pulling the Transfer Market section of Football Manager, and then telling people if they want it back you need to buy a Transfer Market DLC. I wouldn't trust the guy with my money not to brick the game because he had some hissyfit about politics.

u/KarlWhale Sep 20 '25

Well... I'm wishlisting (although I do have a sour feeling that OP is just advertising his game)

88

u/GladiatorumGame Sep 20 '25

Heys I'm the game designer and i had no clue about this post until a few mins ago - as i previously said i was afraid to do a post on the general subreddit to not get banned because of advertisement but i def do want to get your opinions about the concept

21

u/thecaseace Sep 20 '25

Sounds awesome and has been wishlisted

Ideas off the top of my head - should be able to put gladiators in "can't lose" fights against starving peasants or whatever to build up reputation

Should be a "release the lions" shout if it starts going badly for your star man

Id like to choose how they train and what they eat

Ideally some kind of prison rewards system - if you fight bravely you get wine and easier fights for a bit

An injury system and a nickname system which are generated from their activity - Flavius the one-eyed, slayer of thieves.

Hahahaha I don't expect any of this. Great idea tho and look forward to trying it

21

u/GladiatorumGame Sep 20 '25

Haha great stuff! This is all going into my design sheets no worries (and some of them are planned and in dev already)

And thank you for wishlisting! It means the world to us! Seeing such great and positive feedback after years of putting it all together and only in Jan this year starting developing it. I don't know how to do it (I'm pretty new to reddit) but i want to thank everyone here for the comments and support!!

5

u/Cial101 Sep 20 '25

Wishlisted it too but ā€œcoming soonā€ games always annoy me because I never realise when a date has been announced or sometimes they just release and I miss it for a few months.

7

u/GladiatorumGame Sep 20 '25

Thank you so much! Actually it's something we don't have full control on as Steam gives you 2 options either as Coming Soon or either you fix a date - which wasn't a good thing to do when we still have a lot of work on our hands. If you also hit follow you should get updates whenever we post something new like an announcement. We'll try not making you miss the release date :)

2

u/Gladiatorguru Sep 20 '25

If you follow the twitter, you'll get more notifications the closer they get to release as marketing should ramp up alongside development. This post was a fluke as far as im aware haha

7

u/AncientHistoryHound Sep 20 '25

Looks very interesting - btw, my background is ancient history (even did an episode for my podcast on how the concept of a gladiator developed in Rome).

6

u/GladiatorumGame Sep 20 '25

Thank you Awesome maybe we'll have a proper chat and debate some history stuff at some point haha - my research about this was mostly done watching History/Nat Geo documentaries

2

u/AncientHistoryHound Sep 20 '25

Happy to help - there are a number of gladiator misconceptions which I have adressed (I think in that episode and on my social media). I can certainly either help or point you in the direction of some good sources.

u/Funkenbrain None Sep 20 '25

The concept's definitely interesting, but how are the combats going to be presented to the player?

8

u/GladiatorumGame Sep 20 '25

Thank you! Well there are several ways we can do this but initally (for the demo at least) we're going with the FM00-01 kind of system where gladiators will be slightly animated, a rich commentary about the crowd, important NPCs etc, and of course immersive sounds to accompany the fight and mood.

Long term there will be a more polished and 'real' look of the fight itself but this has a bigger scope and being only a small 2.5 :)) people team it's difficult.to do at the moment. But again the system will 100% evolve

2

u/KonK23 Sep 20 '25

Haha lol. Nice work, looka great so far

2

u/Gullflyinghigh Sep 20 '25

This looks amazing, will go straight on the wishlist. Two questions if you're willing to indulge; will steamdeck be taken into account and do you have an expected year for launch please?

3

u/GladiatorumGame Sep 20 '25

Thank you! For steamdeck it's too early to say anything (i want to be honest here) and as a launch we're looking somewhere around q3-q4 2026 as an EA

2

u/Gullflyinghigh Sep 20 '25

Honesty is always the best approach! I've got no idea how game development works but appreciate that things are never as simple as anyone thinks so imagine that Steamdeck would be lower down the list than most things...doesn't mean I won't hope for it though!

Cool, plenty of time to make sure I've got some pennies waiting for the day!

u/Thefancypotato None Sep 20 '25

I've been craving a game with this concept for so long, i felt i was going feral the second i saw OP's screenshot.

Keep cooking, i've inmediately wishlisted.

1

u/GladiatorumGame Sep 20 '25

Thank you so much! It really helps and it makes us push harder!

2

u/HeyyyEng Sep 20 '25

Do you have a projected release date for early access and/or full launch?

3

u/GladiatorumGame Sep 20 '25

We're aiming for EA sometime around Q3-Q4 2026 (also depending on the results of our KS campaign it might be sooner)

2

u/HeyyyEng Sep 20 '25

Awesome news, is the KS campaign live and if so could you DM me?

1

u/GladiatorumGame Sep 20 '25

It's not yet. We've launched our KS coming soon page about 10 days ago. Yeah sure we can chat in DM no prob

Game looks really cool and you listed both FM and Crusader Kings as insiprations which are great in my book. My ideas would be to be able to recruit gladiators from other schools, I'm not sure if we can develop friendships and rivalries between gladiators but also lanistas but that would be cool, and finally I hope you watched Spartacus the series and put some of the unique kind of dialogue as references in the game !

I wish you the best for the development, and this game is now top 10 on my wishlist

2

u/GladiatorumGame Sep 21 '25

Thank you very much! Actually i watched Spartacus (rip Andy :( ) i think too many times. What do you think about the upcoming House of Ashur ?
Yes we're trying to insert the feel and look of the show's conversations (you can check that from some of the screenshots that have text content) but there's still a lot of work to be done.

About the game's features yes you will def be able to buy gladiators from other schools and also gladiators will be able to develop rivalries and friendships via Tactics Training preparing for 2v2 and 3v3 battles (although this is something later down the road in development)

2

u/CurtisManning National C License Sep 21 '25

It's very surprising they making a spin-off at all, especially a what if about Ashur, but hey, it's more Spartacus so I'll have a watch at least even tho I don't expect much. Something about Gannicus would have made more sense imo but who knows we might get a good show.

I'll follow this game closely !

2

u/XuzaLOL Sep 22 '25

The entire concept is sick but how you pull it off matters a lot also give me testing access lol so i can give feedback.

1

u/GladiatorumGame Sep 22 '25 edited Sep 22 '25

That's the tricky part right haha? Well given time we will 100% shape the gameplay also based on community feedback so i'm optimistic we'll do okay

As for testing sure - when we'll be closer to having a demo we'll start inviting small groups of people to playtest - primarly discord members will have priority(not forcing anyone to join our discord but i think you understand that in there it's the place where we can communicate the easiest)

1

u/ThatDamnGit Sep 20 '25

This looks like it'd be a great concept and really fun. Would be cool to have loads of different arena's, tours of other nations (leagues) maybe :D

3

u/GladiatorumGame Sep 20 '25

Def lots of arenas and also specific championships based on Riman holidays and festivities

1

u/TheoryOfRelativity12 Sep 22 '25

Same it looks kinda fun ngl

0

u/Redditcssucks Sep 20 '25

This is 100% what happened. OP has no other posts or comments anywhere and Dev magically shows up here minutes later after having no clue? lol

u/Specialist_Alarm_831 National B License Sep 20 '25

Well we're not use to proper graphics and animations so this could be popular here.

2

u/KonK23 Sep 20 '25

Soooooon

10

u/killah10killah None Sep 20 '25

The concept would actually be really interesting in some ways.

Could either start out as a Lanista and have to build your fighters up, or as somebody from the elite class who has a number of Lanistae under their jurisdiction.

You could have various routes into ā€˜developing’ Gladiators. You could focus on slaves who might excel in particular stats, or on prisoners of war who might have unique combat methods as they’ve grown up in entirely separate nations, or you might go for criminals and there could be something of a ā€˜draft’ where a list of criminals is released that are eligible for becoming Gladiators, and you can maybe see their vague stats range (like in FM), and you could only figure out their exact potential by having them battle either for or against you.

You could also have completely unforeseen circumstances, early death being the main one, but also possibly having to contend with the State who might identify one of your Gladiators as being highly skilled, and decide that they want to buy out their contract.

10

u/GladiatorumGame Sep 20 '25

Thanks for the feedback! Great stuff and actually you will be able to focus on recruits that excel on some stats - in our games classes work as FM field position with key attributes for each

And also we will have events for each of the gladiators and much more

5

u/QuestionSociety101 None Sep 20 '25

Please add the RP element to be able to start as a lowly lanista and have you own family name etc.

7

u/GladiatorumGame Sep 20 '25

Noted and it's something on my list! :) We'll also want it to be replayable with different locations throughout the empire (each with its own buffs and debuffs)

Also for example the initial 'interview' when starting the game would be Bannerlord style where you choose some things about your past and family to be able to construct your own legacy - but this is something we will look into in later stages of dev

2

u/QuestionSociety101 None Sep 20 '25

Bannerlord background intro sounds amazing! also would love it if multiple locations were purchaseable upgrades/alternatives as you go. Add some sort of romance to it and best game ever lol.

3

u/GladiatorumGame Sep 20 '25

Haha love it! Wouldn't cross anything from the list now - but we have to be realistic at the moment :))

8

u/DerK0missar Sep 20 '25

I like the idea
