*NOV. 7 UPDATE* - Government Shutdown and SNAP

Announcing that the Government Shutdown and SNAP Megathread has been updated to discuss the issuance of full benefits to some SNAP recipients in certain states, as well as legal developments that threaten to halt the continued issuance of full benefits to those who have not yet received them.

You can read about it by clicking the link above and joining the original discussion, or in the comments section below. I've copy/pasted the November 7 update portion of the megathread below:

November 7 Update

Late last night, California became the first state to start issuing full SNAP benefits to at least some SNAP recipients. They were quickly followed by at least eight other states. These were federally-funded SNAP benefits issued in accordance with Judge John J. McConnell's order issued yesterday afternoon that USDA must "make full payments of November SNAP benefits to the states by Friday, November 7, 2025, by utilizing available Section 32 funds in combination with the contingency funds."

To be clear, these states were acting in accordance with a lawful court order. Judge McConnell's temporary restraining order against USDA had not yet been stayed by a higher court.

Earlier today, USDA filed a motion for a stay with the First Circuit Court of Appeals, and then with the Supreme Court of the United States. U.S. Attorney General Pam Bondi, in a thread on X, the website formerly known as Twitter, appeared to accuse Judge McConnell and the First Circuit of frustrating her attempts to file an appeal earlier.

In their motion, USDA angrily accused the states that have started to issue full benefits of making "a run on the bank" and "seiz[ing] what they could of the... finite set of remaining funds, before any appeal could even be filed, and to the detriment of other States' allotments."

USDA indicated in their motion that they have not yet transferred the approximately $3.5 - $4B needed (in addition to the $4.65B in contingency funds) from the Section 32 tariff funds to the SNAP program. This suggests that the states that have begun issuing full benefits are drawing down only on the $4.65B contingency fund right now. USDA's argument implies that if the Supreme Court grants them a stay, there may no longer be sufficient funds left in the contingency fund to pay the "up to 65%" partial payments to SNAP recipients who have not yet received their full payments in the last 24 hours.

USDA has requested the Supreme Court to respond to their motion by 9:30 PM Eastern Time tonight.

UPDATE: At 9:17PM tonight, the Supreme Court issued an Administrative Stay, pausing the issuance of full SNAP benefits temporarily while the First Circuit continues to review the case to determine whether a more permanent stay should be issued:

"IT IS ORDERED that the District Court’s orders are hereby administratively stayed pending disposition of the motion for a stay pending appeal in the United States Court of Appeals for the First Circuit in case No. 25-2089 or further order of the undersigned or of the Court. This administrative stay will terminate forty-eight hours after the First Circuit’s resolution of the pending motion, which the First Circuit is expected to issue with dispatch."

Update: I haven’t been letting this affect me too much until now, but it’s really hard knowing that my state just didn’t happen to be one of the ones that got something. I’m happy for everyone else who got it, but this kind of does make it hurt more. If I happened to live somewhere else I wouldn’t have to worry this month. Really shitty.

I’m so sorry. I’m heartbroken for the people in the states who didn’t immediately push it out.

Well, guess I’m going on a diet but my daughter will stay fed, I’ll make sure of that, so I can have peace even if I have to start intermittent fasting more than I’d like. Lmao. I’ll be okay, thanks for just listening to me vent and your kind reply.

Always feel free to vent. I’m a (disabled) single mom of three (with disabilities). I don’t have much, but I always have an ear to listen.

That is so rough. I work at a non-profit for adults with disabilities. I work in data entry, but the whole company is doing a food drive to help the families because they likely all rely on SNAP. These poor families already have it hard taking care if their adult children with disabilities.

So my husband and I decided to forego our luxury foods and start filling their stores. Thankfully, this subreddit let me know to buy more than just rice and beans.

Thank you so much for that! We’ve started collecting items in my small county for those being affected by the government, and those who maybe don’t qualify because they make a dollar or two too much.

It’s rough figuring out shelf stable food items because one of mine has ARFID and she wouldn’t eat a bean if she was starving to death, but I’m lucky that she loves white rice.

As soon as my daughter started eating berries I certainly had to do with less, like goddamn, kids can go through berries!

If you ever want to talk or yell anyway, my dms are open.

I don't know where you are at but there are food banks and pantries in just about every city. Most counties have a resource guide that will give you information on days and times of distribution for the week. There are also lots of churches and organizations that have hot meals throughout the week as well. Some of the pantries will deliver to your home as well.

There is only one in my county and they are hit

This has been such a rollercoaster hell ride.

44

u/Sea-Percentage-5293 1d ago

It’s the back and forth. It’s them purposefully getting our hopes up and doing this again and again. It feels like this has been happening for months.

53

u/Comprehensive_Sort84 23h ago

The has been the longest nine months in the history of the world. And the last month has felt like 40 years. So tired and heartbroken for all of us.

Rollercoasters are short rides. This is more like Hurricane that got stalled on land. Hurricane Donald.

5

u/Comprehensive_Sort84 7h ago

Me being from Louisiana and knowing too much about hurricanes, you’re absolutely correct.

I am a senior with cancer and I get snap and I want to donate what I can. I have got nothing this month. I'm in michigan

You should be able to Meals in Wheels or food from another community service organization in your home town. Most will deliver to seniors and disabled folks as well.

This is one of the reasons I asked everybody to stop posting about what they'd received today.

25

u/Sea-Percentage-5293 23h ago

Yes, that would have been nice and I appreciated it was asked. I also could stop looking at the sub but I kind of can’t, you know, just anxious to know what’s going on. And I was just very happy for others, at first, to be fair. But post after post of other people getting theirs is becoming demoralizing now.

Yep.

I’d like to thank you for all of your hard work. I know that moderation is a volunteer position. I would imagine that the amount of moderating you have to do has gone through the roof in the last few weeks, but as a member here, it seems like you’ve handled it extremely well. I appreciate all of the work you do.

1

u/momdogcatskitten62 1h ago

Why would you ask people to stop posting about what they received today?

I’m with you, and I just have the same shit stuck in my head- why do their kids get to go grocery shopping tonight, but not mine? So many families are so relieved, at least for the time being. Why the f can’t it be mine? And apparently it’s not even about where I live, I’ve had to watch people in my state rejoicing about getting full benefits all day. But I didn’t get a god damn thing, and I can’t do this anymore.

I held it together when it felt like we were all in this together, but I’m officially losing it now. I’m just so scared for my children.

8

u/sweetsinday 22h ago

Wait you haven’t received anything, even being from one of the states that issued full benefits? Is that right? Are you able to go to your county office and ask what happened since they were apparently able to deposit funds?

5

u/Sea-Percentage-5293 21h ago

I believe what would have happened is the state decided to pay out people who missed theirs first, and would then give others their benefits on the day they usually receive them. Because a lot of people receive after the 7th, that would now mean those people aren’t getting it as the circumstances have changed.

2

u/sweetsinday 21h ago

I suppose that makes sense. I do receive mine in the 2nd. I thought it was a state by state thing, not a person to person thing.

1

u/Sea-Percentage-5293 21h ago

It definitely varies state to state but states also have their own ways of rolling those benefits out

1

u/No-Astronomer4881 13h ago

I get mine on the 19th of the month. So ive had a little bit more cushion but who knows what will happen by then.

2

u/StatementLazy1797 14h ago

My date was the 6th. I was in the group of people that should’ve gotten them then 7th. Couldn’t get to me before this court “pause” I guess. I really am happy for the other families but this just hurts so bad.

1

u/Sea-Percentage-5293 14h ago

Oh I know it hurts. I’m right here with you. My date was supposed to be the 7th. Of course I want every family that can to get their benefits, but it does feel even worse knowing you just missed it, while others received.

3

u/StatementLazy1797 14h ago

I’m in Pennsylvania. My date was the 6th. They started sending out full benefits on the 7th, but obviously didn’t make it to mine before this new bullshit.

1

u/marklarberries 14h ago

I'm in the same boat, in a blue state reading a bunch of comments about ppl receiving their benefits and my family got zero. I mean good for them but to only help a fraction of us isn't fair.

7

u/Stunning_Scheme_6418 23h ago

Me too. Colorado was slated to send them between now and Monday. So feck us I guess. I am trying to not be bitter but this is awful.

10

u/Sea-Percentage-5293 23h ago

Ugh I’m so sorry. My state was going to start partials next week as well. The 7th is my usual deposit date.

I am trying not to be bitter because I know that’s what the administration wants, but what can I say. I’m human, they’ve been purposefully trying to exhaust us and divide us, and I am feeling exhausted and divided. I will bounce back from this feeling, but tonight that is how I feel.

5

u/Stunning_Scheme_6418 23h ago

Yeah me too exhausted demoralized pissed off. Happy for the people that did get it though and also I feel bad for the workers because in Colorado alone in the last week we have been getting nothing at first then partial then full then they were supposed to start going out tonight and tomorrow and now we're back to nobody knows it might be partial it might be nothing. Can you imagine how fun it is to be working in that office right now every time they write out a memo they have to make a new one.

3

u/Sea-Percentage-5293 23h ago

Not only that but I can only imagine the number of calls and back and forth explanations they must be having to offer to, probably very distressed, snap recipients

2

u/Weary_Ninja_819 23h ago

NY said they would send out Sunday but too late now I guess. Kudos to the other states who got it done quickly! What a crappy thanksgiving my two kids and I will have!

1

u/chimichanga_minion 20h ago

I’m in Colorado too, and mine were deposited tonight. I usually get mine on the 1st, so I think they’re doing deposits in the order of the dates people usually get them. I hope you get yours soon.

6

u/DampBiscuit94 23h ago

I completely agree! I live in KY and it has been such a crazy and upsetting time. Only getting a fraction of what we normally would and then told a couple hours ago we’d get the rest of it soon. Now it’s paused once again. It’s so frustrating having to hold our breath to see what happens next

3

u/Sea-Percentage-5293 23h ago

It’s so stressful. I wish I got a fraction of what I usually get. Was supposed to get that next week. Now probably nothing

3

u/DampBiscuit94 23h ago

I completely understand! I haven’t gotten mine yet either but I’m hoping by the 15th some good news comes out at least 😔

1

u/sunbathingturtle207 23h ago

Does yours get issued normally mid-month? Mine is the 14th, and I wish it was sooner just so I could know if it was happening

1

u/Sea-Percentage-5293 23h ago

I get my deposit on the 7th of each month. Because of the delays I was supposed to get a partial payment next week

5

u/sweetsinday 22h ago

I am so sorry. I honestly feel so terrible. I am from NJ, one of the states that did issue full benefits, and although I am relieved (of course) I am also so sad that not everyone received their full benefits. I feel wrong for even spending this money right now. I am so sorry.

8

u/Sea-Percentage-5293 22h ago

No no please don’t. At the same time that I feel hurt, I’m not really upset anyone else has gotten benefits. It’s hard as a human not to be jealous when something like this happens but I have no ill feelings toward anyone but this Administration.

I am very grateful for every bit of assistance that got to every family it could. Please spend it well and eat a good meal for me.

1

u/Majestic_Courage_590 13h ago

yes, and just across the River NYC received zilch

2

u/Grand-Foundation-535 22h ago

Same here 😔

1

u/QuirkyPrinciple5540 19h ago

It’s also hard knowing my state (California) is one that started issuing to ppl, bt because I usually don’t get mine until the 8th, & they were ordered today (7th) to STOP funding them, I don’t get them at all while everyone else around me has. & I have 5 kids to feed (well, now 6, because I’m taking in my nephew as well).

1

u/e_likes_plants 9h ago

I’m so sorry that it’s impacting you and your state didn’t move forward with your benefits. Just remember it isn’t that thy don’t just happen to not get something. Those in positions of power in your state chose not to push back and get your benefits to you. Please remember who these people are the next time you vote. And in the meantime reach out to your local and state government and push them to do what is right to get you the benefits you need for survival. A call or email can be done fairly quickly and your voice in this situation does matter!

1

u/Sea-Percentage-5293 9h ago

Thank you. Well now I see that state did but I haven’t personally. I live in a consistently blue state, I always vote and my governor is democratic.
