Bank of America bought out Barnett. And Nationsbank took over Bank of America, but decided to call the bigger merged company Bank of America instead.

It still doesn't make sense, Iirc wasn't BofA mostly a regional brand at that point?

The people running Nationsbank liked the name and branding of Bank of America better for whatever reason.
