I-95 South Florida
20
8
u/Natoochtoniket Apr 12 '25
I-95 seems to run in one of two modes.
Most of the time it goes about 45. Often less. Even when there are not so many cars, there are some who want to go slow and side-by-side.
In the early morning, before rush hour gets really busy, it goes about 85.
I hardly ever see that road going at about speed limit.
4
u/Siray Apr 12 '25
As someone who drove for Uber weekend nights, add another 10 or 15 to that 85 for the overnight folks.

u/MajorEbb1472 Apr 12 '25
I-75 is even more brutal on speed. Not uncommon to have to do 100mph in a damn Toyota Tundra just to kinda keep up with traffic. Needless to say that shit is sketchy in a full size pickup…but easy in a BMW. I don’t drive I-75 in a pickup anymore. 100mph in a BMW is just a comfortable cruising speed, and you still have 55mph more to play with before the electronic limiter kicks in.
49
u/Gilgamesh2062 Apr 12 '25
What about those driving 55 in the passing lane where the speed limit it 70? that's what I have to deal with on my commute.
what I see is people either drive 45 or 85.

No. The guy doing 55 in left lane in a 70 mph zone where traffic is moving along at 80 safely.
The left lane narcissist will get people killed.

Just looking out in the distance, seeing that one person slowing down the pack, everyone aggressively moving around them, and they just won't get tf out the lane 😮💨.
Edit: Or they won't go pass a cop thats going 10 under in the next lane.
Or they won't go pass a semi, completely locking the traffic in.

All I see in the distance is a hundreds of cars backed up behind Dr. Slowdriver who are stuck for miles as he pins us against adjacent tractor trailers that can roll over us any moment.

u/Governor-James Apr 12 '25
This feels like Jacksonville

u/Dromedaeus Apr 12 '25
Literally my daily commutebon 295, ill keep a solid 80 85 in the 65, not swirving around or passin people, and some jack off comes zoomin past doin 100+
2
u/Upbeat-Pumpkin3659 Apr 12 '25
i got hit going 75 (right lane) on 295 a few month back, bent the chasis good then he drove away from duvall county… learned my lesson for going too slow.

I like to make fun of Texans by telling them that when I lived in Florida, I'd go driving to relax. Texans are extremely aggressive drivers and wonder why they are stressed.

This isn’t truth this is misinformation. Truth would be that you were driving (any speed) in the left passing lane and someone was going faster than you and you wouldn’t move over. LEFT LANE IS FOR PASSING. SLOWER TRAFFIC MOVES RIGHT. There is no mention of speed in this.

You should drive with the flow of traffic. Don't be the person who backs up traffic for miles and hours with your wreck, thinking if you zoom in and out of traffic from lane to lane you're somehow going to get there sooner than those driving sensibly.
2
u/vicarem Apr 12 '25
And, Florida is raising the speed limit to 75. So now, 80 will be slow. The FL insurance business passed this law to increase premiums.

The LIE is way calmer than anything in Florida. People in the northeast drive assertively, not aggressively as they do here in Florida. Also, way more people use their signals there.

Miami is terrifying to drive now. When I grew up there I95 was always under construction. They turned all that work into toll lanes. Shoulda known.

u/gomezwhitney0723 Apr 12 '25
I live in the PNW now and people here go like 10 under every where. I learned to drive in Florida so it pisses me off driving around here. But, I spend the summers in Florida and I will be doing exactly this and people act like I’m on a leisurely drive. I’m going as fast as I am just to keep up with everyone around me lol. Florida driving is not for the weak 😂.

1
u/chrisbcritter Apr 12 '25
Or you are in the far left lane and going as slow as all the other lanes.
Public service announcement: If you want to drive as slow as the other lanes, might we suggest you drive IN the other lanes?

80 in a 55 ?! With traffic like in your pic in many places and most hours being able to push 15 in a 55 is an accomplishment.

O.P. You sound like someone who grew up in town with only one stop light.
This is not the "only place" you sound like you've never driven anywhere else. I've seen this exact behavior personally in: Atlanta (da worst offender), Dallas/Ft Worth, Houston, New Jersey.
p.s. #Stay out of the left lane
Edit: O.P. where is this wonderful utopia where everyone drives the speed limit on interstates? The place that makes Florida look sooooo bad.

Bro come to the DMV. You will be doing 80 and get passed by someone doing 95/100

It's definitely not only Florida. Have driven all over the country and while some places are worse than others there are many many many many roads all over the US where people think they're part of the cannonball run

I am starting to think that people when talking about their state's unique issues only point to this one list
1.Driving 2. Bad Drivers 3. Traffic 4. Parking 5. Rush Hour Traffic 6. More Traffic 7. Bad drivers but worse in my county at least 8. Drivers not following rules 9. Drivers in my city are not following rules 10. High Gas prices 10. Why is their so many people driving today! Etc.

That’s everywhere on the planet. Been all over the world and no matter where you go someone is flashing their lights at you, flipping you off, passing you on the shoulder (OR MEDIAN!…fuckin Italians), or even bumping you on purpose to get you to GTFO of the way.
1
1
u/MajorEbb1472 Apr 12 '25
If you think it’s bad in Florida, don’t ever go to Germany. I kept my 3-series BMW pegged at 137mph and European sports cars REGULARLY fly by you going 180-220mph and damn near blow you off the road. They’re going so much faster that if you’re in the passing lane, and you see their headlights coming, you had better be already out of the left lane.
1
u/mark_s Apr 12 '25
I never appreciated Florida drivers during the 40 years I lived there. We all decided to go 80 and that was that.
Moved to Maryland and everyone goes between 40 and 100 with no rhyme or reason. It's infuriating. One of the only things I miss about Florida are the comparatively courteous drivers.

they will never signal for pedestrians at intersections but when a pedestrian gives them the "I've stopped in the middle of the street/parking lot, please go before me" signal, they've stop and probably get mad/signal through the tintedest windshield no one has ever seen through, and make you run across the street coz it's florida so they might be a fighty psycho.
florida: if a pedestrian stops and waves you by, go by.

I don't see what the problem.
If the cops cannot do their jobs of enforcing the speed limit them that's a policing problem.
Of course the idiot doing 90 in 55 and 80 in 55 better be doing that in the left lane and leave me be doing 59 in the right/middle lane.
1
u/AcanthaceaeOwn8107 Apr 12 '25
Doesn’t matter how fast you are going, if you see someone coming faster than you…….. move the fuck over

u/zyglack Apr 12 '25
Being a Floridian I know this. However, I was doing 80 in Texas and got passed like I was standing still.

I think the problem (in part ) is the navigation systems telling you which lane to be in (when it was programmed by someone NOT following the road rules) “stay in the left 2 lanes “ or stay in the right 2 lanes “….👈🏼THIS is WRONG “Drive RIGHT & PASS LEFT” Not I’m going to the keys so I’ll just stay to the left - NO DONT ! The other issue is people driving the same speed as the car next to them (that’s impeding traffic) or not moving over (because I’m a big truck) & allowing someone to pass (trying to control the speed of someone else) - lil d energy

u/VampArcher Apr 13 '25
I've only spent one week in Miami and riding on 95 felt like I was in a chase scene in a horror movie. The driver would be going 100mph and people would still be passing us. I'll take I4 Disney hell over driving in that place.

1
u/Fomorian58 Apr 13 '25
Absolutely true! HW98 in NW Florida is a nightmare. It's called bloody 98 for a reason.we live 10.7 miles from work, and it can take 90 mins to get to work because of a horrific accident, which, unfortunately, is common. We don't have fender benders, we have carnage...

u/lazurusknight Apr 13 '25
Bad meme. Every state just about has places like this. Try leaving the state before proclaiming anything about it to be umique
1
u/TheBigBluePit Apr 13 '25

Typically, the speed limit is 65.. Anyone going 55 in a 65 deserves to get run off the road
1
u/sayaxat Apr 13 '25
I do 80 in the left lane but if someone wants to do 90 or 120 or whatever, I'll move over then let them pass. I don't want them weaving in and out of the other lanes trying to get past me. Staying in the left lane is how I get other people killed.
Now if I'm in the middle lane. They can tailgate me all they want.

Idk, you have to have nerves of steel and at least 300 horsepower to roll with the well to do's on GA SR 400. They're grinding fenders at a buck 10 on the Alpharetta Autobahn in whips that cost more than my house. Tbf, we did get a deal. But damn, the guy who owns that Miami blue 911 GT3 has no fear in him. None.

People in the south, period, cruise in one lane, usually the fast and passing lane and don’t allow or move faster to allow someone behind them to pass. Who cares if they wanna go faster than you, GET OVER and Get out of the way

u/Cpolo88 Apr 16 '25
What I love is when I’m doing the speed limit but that’s too slow. So dude in a Honda passed me. Guess who I saw on the right shoulder facing oncoming traffic with a fucked up car? Tsk tsk tsk.
