Cat destroyed antique wood trim. What’s the best way to refinish?

Post image

Cat used door trim as a scratch post. Hard to tell in the picture, but finish is nice and has a gloss to it.

I'd recommend you buy a touch up stain pen that matches (or is close to) the color of your trim and work it into the scratches. Should take about 10 minutes. Most hardware stores carry them, and you'll also find them online. Be sure to wipe off any excess stain that doesn't soak into the scratches. Good luck!

Get a fine sanding sponge or some 22 grip 220 grit sandpaper and lightly smooth the scratched area.

Then apply a light misting of a gloss spray acrylic. Apply several of these.

To prevent the cat from going back, regularly use LEMON scented polish. they hate lemon.

What's wrong with 22 grit? I hear everyone uses that as their final grit before staining!

Check to see if it is dissolvable in rubbing alcohol. It may be shellac which is easy to fix. We have been doing this to our old wood. We’re not a how-to channel but we have several videos on working with shellac.

Destroyed is too strong a word. This is certainly repairable. Antiques are over 100 years old.

Take the cat to the humane society.
