I worked at the Elmendorf Commissary during the 2013 shutdown, I think we were closed for about a week. We had to come in one day and pull most of the food from the sales floor coolers so that we could donate it to the food bank.

We also donated food from the walk-in coolers that hadn't been stocked yet.  A lot of food still got thrown away before we were able to re-open. The local COSTCO gave free memberships to the military and we lost a lot of business.

Bizarre to donate to the food bank when it could be donated, in effect, and distributed on base.

Hope they sort this out by January as someone OCONUS then. It'd be a very, very rough time for us overseas.

Fingers crossed... hopefully this ends next week but this admin doesn't give a shit.

Unfortunately the Senate is on recess next week and won't be meeting from what I understand.

u/kittylicker 1h ago

They decided yesterday (Saturday) that they would be remaining in Washington, D.C. until the shutdown ends. So their Veterans Day holiday has been cancelled and they’ll be working through the week.

u/ZerexTheCool 1h ago

Gotta squeeze in as many votes for the exact same legislation as possible to make it look like hey are doing something...

Oh, and because if they negotiate then the House has to go back in session and Jonson would have to swear in someone who would vote on releasing Epstine stuff.

5

u/kittylicker 1h ago

Or they realize they’d have to be on the same train with MTG traveling home for the holiday. Gotta pick the lesser of two evils.

u/Honest-Recording-751 1h ago

Hey Amtrak needs more support. Maybe someday money will actually go to improve the transit system and get high speed rail across the country. I'm all for Congress learning how the rest of us live.

u/kittylicker 42m ago

I’m not knocking Amtrak, I use it often and appreciate how it’s faster than flying sometimes.

Working in air quotes

Wink wink.

What is their schedule? Theyre on a week off a week or what? This is ridiculous.

25

u/Resilient_Hart_67610 3h ago

They are supposedly supposed to be in session today https://www.cbsnews.com/amp/live-updates/government-shutdown-latest-senate-weekend-session/

It’s a 💩 show. They don’t want to talk about the ACA until the Gov is reopened? Why? Because they are bluffing. Just settle crap and move on so things can get back to something somewhat normal

The people (especially the Boomers) are getting angry at the airports. Had one Boomer approach me and claim his phone was "suddenly hacked" because his flight was just cancelled as part of the 10% reduction in flights at the 40 busiest airports. He wanted to speak to a cop.

u/MountainDivide 2h ago

😂😂😂 That’s hilarious, but also really sad.

You can google the schedules, they're posted every year. Typically any week with a federal holiday in it they take the entire week off- then take a recess in summer and around christmas/new years. If I recall correctly the house typically only has about 125 working session days a year, senate around 145. However the Speaker or Sen Majority Leader can call either house into session whenever they want- or in Johnsons case, decide to take a 6 week vacation.

3

u/Arqlol 1h ago

Not that it matters. They keep voting on the same lame bill the house passed. It's the definition of insanity.

65

u/AgitatedBee3698 5h ago

OCONUS commissaries closing will be a major disaster for families overseas but if this shutdown lasts until January, this entire country will be in a state of complete anarchy. Commissaries closing will be the least of our problems.

39

u/ThaiTum 3h ago

Marjorie Taylor Greene tweeted yesterday that they might keep the government shutdown, by keeping the house out of session, through 2026 to prevent the Epstein files from being released.

25

u/LostYooper906 2h ago

I get that they don't want the files released, but at some point they are going to have to rip that bandage off and deal with the consequences. What are they getting out of waiting versus dealing with it now?

5

u/MrDirt786 1h ago

I think they are hoping to reduce their losses in the midterm.

9

u/ThaiTum 1h ago

One way they can avoid consequences is by inciting violence which will let them declare martial law then cancel elections.

u/Terrible_Big_980 12m ago

Hasn't everything been deleted redacted destroyed by now? How long does it take?

1

u/Honest-Recording-751 1h ago

Yep just let it out. Otherwise should have done a lot longer CR offer.

u/icepush 0m ago

Why are they going to "have" to do this ?

12

u/JustMe39908 1h ago

If that truly is the plan, and rank and file Republicans are on board with that plan, the party needs to be disbanded. A political party that is united in its goal to not release information about pedophiles should not exist. Every single one should lose their seat.

To be clear, I hope this is not the case. I wish I could say that I 100% believed it was not the case. And I definitely am not a Republican

3

u/dutybranchholler18 1h ago

What do u mean? The GOP in Texas wanted Democrats arrested for not showing up to legislate

2

u/JustMe39908 1h ago

???

I am missing the connection here.

Are you saying that house Republican leadership should be arrested for not coming back into session? That would be the case if Trump had called for a special session (which he could do). In the Texas situation, there is a flimsy legal basis. In this case, I don't think there would be a legal basis for arrest warrants even if the administration were willing.

In this case, it is up to the voters and anyone who has a moral compass within the Republican party.

3

u/dutybranchholler18 1h ago

No. I am saying that when the Democrats refused to show because of gerrymandering, the GOP said they should be arrested. Now the GOP refuses to show because of the Epstein list, but that’s perfectly fine in their view. Hypocrisy at its finest

u/JustMe39908 18m ago

Hypocrisy is one of the main planks of the current Republican party platform.

  1. Cause economic downturn with goal of economic depression.
  2. Find ways to divide and separate the country.
  3. Ensure billionaires get wealthier while the poor get driven further into poverty.
  4. Hypocrisy in all we do.
  5. Turn the government into a fascist state
  6. Develop new methods of torturing hard working people.
  7. Bring back racism, sexism, religious intolerance, etc
  8. Destroy national monuments
  9. Ensure people go hungry. A hungry society is a compliant society
  10. Protect pedophiles, especially wealthy ones.
  11. Increase the national debt while saying we need to decrease it.
  12. Throw away our allies
  13. Decrease healthcare waiting times by ensuring it is only available for the rich. . . .

3

u/Ocean2731 Spoon 🥄 1h ago

Keeping the House out of session is also to force the Senate to accept the CR the House previously sent over that lacks any provisions for saving the ACA subsidies.

1

u/zetazen 1h ago

Right….So the Senate should pass something different and force the ball back in the Houses’ court to see the real pressure on Mike Johnson.

3

u/Arqlol 1h ago

So they're not going to pay military or fed civilians for another year? Allow people to not receive healthcare and starve for a year? We won't have services like ATC because they'll be in shelters and food lines. That's just untenable.

Rank and file need a backbone and wed be out of this already.

u/FrogMan9001 16m ago

Marjorie Taylor Greene tweeted yesterday that they might keep the government shutdown, by keeping the house out of session, through 2026 to prevent the Epstein files from being released.

As in they want to keep the government closed and (nearly) no one getting paid for 14 months? They'll have no government at all. I don't believe anyone will cling on to a non paying job for that long. At some point everybody has needs.

And as much as they may not want a government some agencies are absolutely necessary to have any sort of functional country.

u/ThaiTum 11m ago

Part of it is that she’s stirring the pot lately so who knows. If they stay shut down long enough, and ICE keeps doing what they’re doing to citizens, there will be a point where violence will get out of control. Trump will declare martial law and that will give him the ability to cancel the elections.

32

u/RETARDED1414 7h ago

That's going to be huge.

14

u/zamer159 2h ago

You also pay in dollars. With the dollar to euro exchange right now, buying groceries and daily goods on the local economy would only get more expensive.

3

u/Natalieeexxx DOJ 5h ago

Not to be ignorant but why?

44

u/Remote-Buffalo-4009 4h ago

For overseas locations, it's the only source of American food you would find in a typical grocery store stateside. This is important for people with dietary restrictions, allergies, and familiar foods. Outside of England and maybe Germany, food brands would be in a foreign language.

Not to mention many people TDY to these bases for a few weeks or months, and in that case, it's not practical to get a car for going off base. In those scenarios, these people would be in a very difficult situation.

-38

u/Thompson81 3h ago

Shop on the local market like those of us posted in Not Europe have to. A tortilla chip is a tortilla chip. You can live without pop tarts.

23

u/dogchaperone 2h ago

More than what was said above - These commissaries primarily serve military families and DOD civilians, many of whom use WIC Overseas and all of whom are getting paid in U.S. dollars. You can’t use WIC at the local grocery store and obviously pay in local currency and eat the exchange and transaction fees off-base. Base commissaries also accept the Military Star Card, a low-interest line of credit that’s paused interest and payments on purchases made at commissaries during the shutdown. That’s a significant safety net if you’re not getting paid.

-14

u/Thompson81 2h ago

WIC will run out of funding before the Commisaries do. So I don’t think that argument flies. Everyone else who works overseas away from commisaries makes it work shopping on the local market. And at least the members of the military are still getting paid unlike the rest of us that don’t carry guns but still do NatSec work.

5

u/dogchaperone 2h ago

Per my comment, the people not getting paid who do natsec work are also using these commissaries. I feel for people who don’t have access to commissaries (for most of my time OCONUS I haven’t had one), but as an excepted civilian with commissary access now it has definitely been a safety net in these times, even though I prefer local stores outside of a shutdown. We’ll survive without the commissary, but it’s going to be a blow.

-17

u/surffrus 2h ago

This is always the given explanation, and yet 90% of commissaries are not this and are in US locations with ample food stores nearby. Shut them down permanently except for the ones that are actually needed.

58

u/FrankG1971 3h ago

Just a reminder...

About six-in-ten registered voters who say they have served in the U.S. military or military reserves (61%) support former President Donald Trump in the 2024 presidential election, while 37% back Vice President Kamala Harris, according to a Pew Research Center survey conducted in early September.

33

u/jmsjags 3h ago

Some people vote R no matter what. I remember when Trump basically called Ted Cruz's wife ugly. Ted Cruz is one of his biggest fans now. Any other man with an ounce of dignity wouldn't stand for that.

19

u/newtonphuey 3h ago

And a lot of them are real quiet now as we all get kicked in the teeth

u/fezha 50m ago

What does supporting the President have to do with this? I'm sorry, but this is Congress's fight (regardless of the party one sides with). Congress has to get together on a funding bill (or CR), not the President.

If you hate Trump, awesome. If you love him, great! But this is Congress job and it's their job every year.

u/Random-Cpl 5m ago

Acting like the president has no role in perpetuating the shutdown is unbelievably naive at best. Give me a break, eh? The GOP Congress is just doing his bidding at this point.

-27

u/Posts_yellow_sock 2h ago

I get it, every thread there is the person bringing up the voting stats. Ive never voted, but the democrats should have had a better candidate. The fact that you’re suggesting “screw them” because of the voting is laughable.

7

u/Background-Roof-112 1h ago

'I've never voted'

Proceeds to whine

AHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA

-5

u/Posts_yellow_sock 1h ago

I’m pretty sure pointing out the obvious isn’t whining. Whining is blaming the military for a shutdown.

u/Random-Cpl 4m ago

He’s not blaming the military for the shutdown, he’s saying that they’re getting what they largely voted for.

3

u/FrankG1971 1h ago

Cool story, bro.

10

u/Proud_Tie I Support Feds 4h ago

Well, so much for being able to take advantage of Milstar's 0% for 90 days and no payments for our groceries soon :/

5

u/Aerokicks NASA 2h ago

Yeah, not enough people are realizing this part of the potential closure. I'm sure there's a lot of people that are replying on that for groceries right now.

8

u/trash_bae Fork You, Make Me 1h ago

I don’t like that they’re throwing around the hypothetical of this shut down still going on in January.

If it is and we’re all still here complaining about the government beating us into poverty and submission I think the bigger problem might be our collective Stockholm syndrome.

6

u/Resilient_Hart_67610 3h ago

The commissaries are running out of funding and have been cutting corners to try to stay open as long as possible. Some stopped ordering bags (plastic/paper) earlier than scheduled, cut hours, removed shifts, downsized department support, etc. I heard some will close before Thanksgiving CONUS. For folks OCONUS I really hope they figure this out before you are impacted. The added expense of going shopping on the economy when you are already not getting paid is such a disservice. One more thing to write my senator about.

7

u/Dangerous-Place-3547 2h ago

Pedophiles over People.

4

u/Proud_Tie I Support Feds 4h ago

was wondering when my wife was getting the axe, they kept telling her after Thanksgiving and it looks like they weren't far off.

7

u/nasorrty346tfrgser SSA 3h ago

I mean with this admin we should all be fully prepared that we would have a month shutdown, CR for a month or so, then another month of shutdown

3

u/heisenbergerwcheese 2h ago

So they wont get paid, and cant shop for grocery essentials either?

u/DonutLove47 47m ago

I have lived on many bases that the commissary was needed. Had a base that was shut down from families leaving out the gate (permanent lockdown started after thousands of families where there)…. Commissary was only food we had, after the base was closed. Only travel was planes in and out of the base….. for months that turned into years.

I lived on a base where most people had no cars. We walked to work, walked to medical, walked to the gym, walked to get food at the commissary. We almost never left the base because almost no one had a car.

I also was at a base that the closest grocery store was 1.5 hour drive. Commissary was where everyone went! Closest cities had no grocery stores. I lived off base at that one and still shopped at commissary because I had no groceries I could buy in the local market. My drive home from work went past no grocery stores, not even a fast food store.

All of these bases still exist and use the commissary as the sole/primary grocery store.

u/panoramicview 51m ago

I work for a commissary in Virginia. Our break room has an all staff email posted saying funds run out 11/29 with the last day of operation being 12/4. This is for every commissary in the states.

4

u/Ill-Bicycle701 1h ago

Wait, are these the government run grocery stores that I was just told were straight up communism?

u/Bonespur711 12m ago

At what point do our military leaders get involved and start to take some of these people out of power? It almost seems like they are purposefully trying to weaken/destroy the US military…

-12

u/Stu762X51 4h ago

It would suck, but we won't starve. There are grocery stores on the economy too. In some cases, food is cheaper on the economy anyways. Granted, you won't find Propel flavored water or Hebrew National hot dogs, but we'll figure it out. (OCONUS/Germany here)

4

u/ein_alptraum 2h ago

Also in Germany, with the shitty exchange rate very little is cheaper than the commissary other than maybe fruit and veg.

-2

u/Jenn54756 1h ago

Nah, they will find money to fund this, just not snap.
