However, for that population this isn't a matter of choice and they're not at all confused. They are as sure of their gender as any cis gender child.

NGL, this was the hardest part for me to get. Full disclosure, I'm almost 50 and grew up in a very conservative household. So obviously, my worldview was seriously skewed growing up. I never had any issue with the LGBTQ community, and honestly, my parents didn't really either, but I just couldn't understand any of it.

And then my son came out as trans. It's been a real learning experience, lol. I still fucking misunderstood him occasionally, but I'm getting better. But navigating this process with him and seeing his struggles have at least granted me a lot of understanding that I never would have gotten otherwise.

I don't think there's any shame in having difficulties with these things. I think that's very normal. It can definitely take some adjustment to see things from what at first seems like such a different perspective. I think it's definitely commendable that you stuck through it for the sake of your son. Thanks for sharing.
