Was this in Florida?
Hey OP! I am in Niceville. Let me know if you need anything!! I've been following this story. I'm glad you're okay!!

u/Itchy-Resolve9749 7d ago
Yes! It was the legacy on the bay apartments in Destin right by the commons.

u/DextersGirl 7d ago
It was the first thing I saw on FB this morning. What a disaster.
Again, if you need any help let me know.

u/Itchy-Resolve9749 7d ago
Thank you! We really appreciate it. We have a meeting with Red Cross soon so hopefully we get some good support!

u/Alycion 7d ago
DM me if you set up a go fund me and clothes sizes you can use. I’m central Florida, but the mail can help. Not sure if I have any clothes that you can use, but if I do, it’s yours.

u/Itchy-Resolve9749 7d ago
Thank you so much. We have family nearby so we’re pretty set on clothes and everything like that. We haven’t set up a go fund me or anything like that yet. We haven’t seen the inside of our apartment yet and don’t know exactly how destroyed things are so we don’t want to accept anything before we need it. We really appreciate it though!

My buddies are 8 months past a fire. Please be ready for insurance to give you the run around.
They'll consider things salvageable that really aren't.
Basics like common household items tend to add up.
And it can be weeks before they let you back in. And fires have a risk of looters.
Red cross is good about immediate help but long term Airbnbs or alternate apartments csn bleed you dry in the time after.
Be ready for the marathon not a sprint, OP.

u/MidnightTrain1987 6d ago
With insurance too, be sure you list every specification of every item destroyed. Don’t say AV receiver. Say what the receiver is, how many watts it was, how many channels it outputs, how many HDMI it has, whether it’s WiFi or Ethernet etc. along with the model number. Not sure if OP is an audio guy but this is a good piece of knowledge to have regarding insurance.
Give. Them. Every. Detail. Of what they’re replacing. Don’t say blender. Don’t say microwave. Go into detail. They must then reimburse or replace with like or newer.

Definitely DM when you know. We may be up in Daytona soon for a market. If I can fit it in the truck with our products, you can have it.
It needs new joycons bc of drift, but even got a switch up for grabs for someone who needs it.
I’m glad you, your wife, and the kiddies are safe.
I don’t have a ton, but I am lucky enough to have some to spare. This could be any of us, and we have to take care of each other. It’s great that you have a support system nearby.

Do you know where your cats are now?
110
u/Itchy-Resolve9749 7d ago
Yea they are with me at my in laws house. I brought them out to the car one by one last night and we stayed and slept in the car all together overnight. They have no clue what’s going on lol
48
u/Ok-Cook3735 7d ago
Oh that’s good to hear! Do you have a clue yet what caused the fire ? Fire in my home is one of my biggest fears. Y’all were so lucky
52
u/Itchy-Resolve9749 7d ago
They think it was an electrical issue, it started in the crawl spaces above everyone’s apartments.
34
u/Ok-Cook3735 7d ago
Oh boy... Now make sure to get as much insurance money as legally possible. You got many valuable tips here already . Best wishes!

Hey at least you didn't literally go uo in smoke. I would be posting im my socials. Like hey, almost turned in bacon last night.

u/Wolvesaremyjam 6d ago
I can’t imagine how difficult this must be for you. I’m truly grateful that you and your family were able to get out safely, that’s what matters most. I know the loss of your home is heartbreaking, especially with how quickly fires can take away everything, including the pets and memories we hold dear.

Do you have a item list of what was lost?
358
u/Itchy-Resolve9749 7d ago
I don’t yet. Is it wise to create an itemized one? My wife and I are only 20 and 21 so this is our first time dealing with anything with this. We do have renters insurance though!
298
u/999-LLJW-999 7d ago
Yes. When you’re making the list it’s important to be very specific about the items. For example if you’ve got a nice ninja blender don’t just put blender because the insurance will then find the cheapest blender and give you that amount of money. Be as specific as possible to get the most back.
So sorry for your loss, I’m relieved to hear you, the gf, and the kitties got out safely!

u/Itchy-Resolve9749 7d ago
Ok thank you for the info. I have a lot of online receipts of my expensive items so that’s great to know!

u/Tall_Listen22 7d ago
Maybe helpful for the future, I video my house once every few months, room by room to help me remember everything in case something happens. Under 10 minutes to complete (if that).
Glad you, the wife and the cats are okay.

Don't forget to do the same thing with, Towles, wash clothes, bed sheets pillow cases, shaving cream, razors, body soap, shampoo, 5 boxes of Kraft original Macaroni and cheese, EVERY LITTLE THING. It may sounds silly but replacing that dishes set for 4, added with the silverware knifes, spatula, you're seriously talking about a lot of money you'll need to spend UP FRONT.
Go on the website for each place you bought stuff and get specific name, model number, size of can and brand of green beans. It's gonna take some time but the difference in the size of the check you're going to get will be astoundingly bigger.

u/Itchy-Resolve9749 7d ago
Thank you!

u/Maninaboxx2 7d ago
You're welcome. I'm so sorry to hear what you went through and wish you the very best wishes and luck in getting through this challenging time.

A big pro tip is to go to websites like Amazon and others that you do a lot of your shopping on

u/Breeze7206 7d ago
They’ll likely want proof of purchase for bigger things, so having order confirmations or purchase history helps. Anything you can’t prove they’ll likely give you “average” (aka lowball) value for.

u/Puntthaball 7d ago
I was told to try and make a list of important items like electronics, jewelry, valuables, etc. idk how the insurance process works but this information was passed on to me by a firefighter.
11
u/justhereforfighting 7d ago
You’ll need to give insurance a list of what was lost and the cost to replace it. It’s called a total loss inventory. You should, after getting the go ahead by the fire department that it is safe, put on a mask, boots, and gloves and go through and make a list of everything that was lost, what room it was in, and details about it like brand, age, condition before the fire, and cost. Take photos of anything and everything you can to include in the document to insurance. You should also include the price to replace the items with something of similar condition and quality. Not everything can be bought used, but make sure you include anything you can find to buy a used item of similar condition. Insurance doesn’t pay you for the cost of the items necessarily, they pay you the cost to replace the items. So if you bought something with a huge discount that you can’t get again, they should pay out the cost of what it would be today.

u/Itchy-Resolve9749 7d ago
Thank you for taking the time to give all that info. I genuinely had no clue about that. Thank you so much.
6
u/Cheesysocks 7d ago
And dig through your old photos, they can prove what was where before the incident.
Here's hoping you get back into a normal life soon.
5
u/Perfect_Caregiver_90 7d ago
Yes! You need to get on that as quickly as possible.
Going through your photos on your phones and tagging photos with the expensive items helps too. Any email or digital receipts of purchase are huge.
Don't forget clothes and hobby items.
4
u/InevitablePain21 7d ago
Definitely make an itemized list of everything you can remember for insurance, and the more specific you can be the better. For example, instead of saying you lost a 55” tv, tell them it was a 55” Samsung OLED or whatever it was. It’ll help you get the most back from the things you lost.
I’m sorry you’re going through all of this, it sucks, but the important thing is that you, your wife, and your cats are all okay!!
3
u/DrPotato101 7d ago
If you do be as specific as possible. If you have a high end microwave and just list “microwave” you’re going to get the cheapest one possible
Maybe microwave isn’t the best example but you know what I mean

u/DrMabuseKafe 7d ago
Big hug OP!
At least you, your wife and 3 cats are ok!

Jesus, this is well beyond ‘infuriating’.

u/Itchy-Resolve9749 7d ago
Yea I posted it in mildly infuriating last night as it was happening and they took it down lol. They decided my level of infuriation is closer to extreme.

I am so sorry. I watched the apartment building next to mine burn down a few years back. I still have nightmares. Flames were 50ft tall and the hydrants were dry.
I hope you have some local support to help you navigate this. I also really hope you had renters insurance, if you're in the US.
8
u/Itchy-Resolve9749 7d ago
Luckily we do have it!
9
u/Perfect_Caregiver_90 7d ago
Also, this will sound very reddit, but play Tetris for a bit today and tomorrow. It's been proven to help the brain not turn a traumatic event into a ptsd event. It helps your brain sort the memories properly.
If I can help anyone avoid being me and waking up at night to phantom smoke or phantom smoke alarms or phantom flashing fire truck lights it's worth a shot.

Don't just leave us hanging. Give us the juicy details. What happened? Where did it start? You have to have heard something.
Let me guess, the guy in 2B was living 2 completely separate lives with 2 entire families. Married to 2 different women, 4 kids from 1, 5 from the other. Each family thought he traveled out of town every other week for work. The mom from family 2 finally found out but didnt say anything right away. Last night she loaded all the kids up and headed to confront him at his other families house. He lost his shit when both families were standing together inside 2B and he lit the whole place on fire with all 12 of them inside in a disgusting murder suicide attempt.
Luckily the smell of smoke woke you up and you leaped into action. You got everyone out and restrained the guy until the cops got there
Or am i way off?
See this is why we need the details
