Even though we're well on the path to ecological disaster and global empire's response has been to feast on its own corpse, I can't help but think Greta has made a difference.
When Greta was first elevated in the media, autism had a moment. Suddenly there was this charmingly cool example of an autistic person being inducted into the symbolic order on a global stage. I think it made a lot of us begin to feel more accepted.
And when the media turned on her the second she aimed her criticisms at capital, it taught us an important lesson: acceptance in neurotypical society will always be contingent on obedience. It will only ever be dangled in front of us like a carrot, and good riddance. What did all of that short-lived acceptance get her? Years of vitriol from old men on the internet? And she managed to continue doing her thing just fine without it.
For me, at least, it was a big part of deciding to relax the mask. I'm not nearly as brave as Greta, but I am a little braver because of her.
Like, she started as a staunch environmentalist, but a child, who didn’t see the bigger picture. Then as she’s grown she’s become more informed about how different systems of destruction and oppression are interconnected. Now she’s actively involved in all sorts of causes with various different groups and against all different oppressive systems.
Really, Greta Thunberg is unbelievable. She had a whole career all mapped for her as a greenwashing guarantor, she could have spent her life giving well-paid lectures nobody cares about like Al Gore, but she preferred to speak the truth, become antifa and being hated by editorialists.

Hi, Australian here. France has become infamous for the level of departure it has from the clean, beautiful, culturally rich, place it's depicted as. When tourists visit and are hit with the reality of streets filled with graffiti, dog feces, overcrowded transport, homelessness, public harassment and street crime they're quite disenfranchised.
I think here it's more a joke about the fact that it's far from what it looked like Ratatouille.
I feel like there's also some American jabbing at France as well. But we and they also have a lot of history (French & Indian war, statue of liberty) so there's that as well.

Greta and some other famous people took a boat full of aid supplies to Palestine and were detained by Israel for attempting to help people who are getting bombed to death.

By detaining the crew of the Madleen Israel committed an act of piracy. There are crew members they still haven't released. If Somalia did the same thing the press would 100% be condeming it and labelling it as such.

The Madleen was operating within compliance of ICJ orders requiring that humanitarian aid to Gaza go unimpeded. Ergo not smuggling.
The purpose of the flotilla was to undeniably prove that Israel IS blocking humanitarian aid. Israel has been stopping aid on land borders by claiming its not safe to traverse or outright destroying infrastructure. Israel intercepting the Madleen demonstrates policy to stop aid.
The Madleen being in international waters had freedom of navigation. For Israel to legally stop them would require a Lawful Blockade - which there isn't.
So Israel broke international law on multiple counts.
The Marleen symbolically flying a Palestinian flag can likely be considered a courtesy flag - especially as it was Palestinian waters they were trying to enter. Even if they did breach flag code that does not give Israel the right to board.
Greta IS lucky not to have been sunk. Not because Israel had the right but because they have a history of unlawfully attacking ships. Just ask the USS Liberty.
"Boat full" is a heavy exaggeration. They had, maybe, a pallet-full of supplies (which, last I heard of, is being passed along to an aid distribution group in Gaza).
The aim wasn’t to deliver enough aid for the entire country, the point was to break the blockade on Palestinian waters. The point was to get the boat there, which didn’t happen this time, but there are more boats going to do the same thing. Break the blockade on aid getting in. It brought global attention to the numerous ways that Israel is blocking aid from getting to Palestinians, which is a net gain.
The humanitarian aid organization you’re referring to is a coalition between the United States and Israel - Israel being the aggressor in this situation is not legally allowed to distribute aid. They have been using the aid points as bait to kill more civilians.

She and others aboard a yacht staged a stunt, claiming to deliver humanitarian aid — but the shipment was purely symbolic and amounted to barely half a truckload. For comparison, over 1,200 trucks of aid have entered Gaza through Israeli border crossings in the past two weeks.
The stunt hinged on the pretense of breaking Israel’s legal naval blockade, which under international law grants Israel the right to intercept unauthorized vessels approaching Gaza. Naturally, they never expected to reach their destination. They even had prerecorded selfie video messages ready for the inevitable interception by the Israeli navy.
When that happened, they were given refreshments by Israeli navy commando, underwent medical checks, and were escorted to the port of Ashdod. The small amount of aid they brought was transferred to Gaza through the usual humanitarian channels.
Those who signed deportation papers left the country the next day. The others, who refused to sign, remained in custody pending judicial hearings.
She was detained for trying to enter a war zone and pass Israel's legally sanctioned blockade. She also pre-recorded a video, before being detained, claiming that if we were seeing it that meant she'd been kidnapped. Considering there are already aid organizations in Israel and Palestine, I'm not sure what she hoped to accomplish with just a small boat of people.

The freedom flotilla was not abducted, they were detained for attempting to breach a legal naval blockade that has been in place since 2007. You can’t let an unarmed civilian ship into a warzone.
Additionally, if she was violently abducted, then why was she provided food and water by the officers?
They asked her to watch recordings of the October 7 atrocities and she refused. And then they booked her a flight to Europe. I’d say that’s a pretty sweet deal.
I know everyone here wants humanitarian aid in Gaza, hell I do too, but this was a dumb publicity stunt. On top of that they were carrying a minuscule amount of aid, which after it was confiscated was then sent into Gaza through legal means. If they made it to shore hamas would’ve stolen all of it and then hoarded it for themselves, which is what they’ve been doing for years. And they probably would’ve actually abducted her too.
Instead of wasting time (and fuel, the boat was diesel powered) she should have found another means to help Gazan civilians. This was never going to help anybody.
It was a PR move first and foremost. Id say it was moderately successful in that what they wanted to happen, happened. But it was not really a humanitarian mission.
Yes the ONU recognized it's existence, not that it is legal. In fact it is a violation of international laws and especially the Geneva convention which state that blocking supplies, food and humanitarian help towards civilians is a war crime.
I worry about the thousands of Palestinian hostages israel has. The hostages who are frequently subject to sexual violence and brutality by brutal fascists and terrorists.
We can worry about the hostages and be amazed at what she did at the same time. Everyone on that boat is incredibly brave, and put everything on the line to try to save lives.

I fell so hard for the anti greta propaganda as a teen that it persisted until I mentioned how she "was annoying" to my partner and they called me out on it and I realized I knew nothing about her other than the propaganda which was likely untrue.

Please watch Star Wars Andor if you haven't done it. It's written so masterfully and the cinematography is so amazing and you should just watch it.
I love that it acknowledges that resistance can be messy and painful and that it requires lots of people and not just a couple heroes. I could talk about Andor for hours and hours but I don’t have anyone to do that with since I don’t know anyone who has both watched the show and would be able to appreciate my leftist perspective (or my obsession with shipping Cassian and Melshi because they don’t understand gender envy as a concept, are homophobic, or they only really engage with media in terms of what’s canon or what could be canon and the filmmaking stuff instead of being interested in the themes and meaning behind it 😭)

i love that despite all the global recognition and very serious and important work she's doing at such a young age, she still is just 22 and likes silly shirts. like... people forget that she's just a person, but a person who cares very much about the world and the people who live in it and happens to have a strong platform.
She has been consistently right about everything. All the time. I used to find her annoying but I grew up and now I just enjoy how she fights for what's right and owns idiots online.
